The National Democratic Party (NDP), known as the Kuochiaminchutang (KCMCT) and simply the Kuomintang (KMT), has been the dominant and largest political party in Wanlikuo since the 2012 General Elections. The NDP is the largest within the Alliance for National Revival, a nationalist and conservative political coalition within the Legislative Yuan, which the NDP forms with the Young Wanlikuo Party and the National Solidarity Party. It is a primarily nationalist-conservative political party that can trace its roots back to the conservative tent of the Federalist Party, which split into two in 1992. The NDP inherited the irredentism of the Federalist Party, wishing to restore pre-1921 borders and to 'reunify' the nation. President
Kao Hsieh-jen is from the NDP along with the Speaker of the Legislative Yuan, Hsü Liang, and the Premier of the Republic, Wan Shu-jen. The incumbent chairman is Ho Wu-ying, the grandson of founder Ho Ya-t'ing.

The National Democratic Party was established after the breakup of the Federalist Party in 1992, following its loss in the preceding 1992 General Elections. Historically, the Federalist Party had been a dominant political party, its leaders known as the 'Architects of Modern Wanlikan Federalism.' A decade after the 1921 Hopao Revolution, the country was shaken by another revolt, this time in Wanchuan province on July 15, 1932. Efforts to centralize the country around Chungching and the west failed and caused inadequate development in the inland and eastern regions. A famine then occurred in 1930, devastating rural Wanchuan and became the prime motivation for the Wanchuan Rebellion. The Federalist Party was created as a middle-ground between the government and the regionalists, defeating the ruling Republican Party. The Republican Party and the Federalist Party eventually became the two dominant parties, interchanging power throughout the late 20th century. However, as the Federalist Party slowly lost its identity, it was defeated in 1992. This caused its immediate split due to a disagreement between leadership.

Ho Ya-t'ing led the conservatives and nationalists and broke off from the Federalist Party to establish the National Democratic Party on October 8, 1992, along with the Liberal Party of Wanlikuo, an affiliate party of the Federalist Party. Chairman Ho Ya-t'ing revived the notion of 'National Reunification,' the restoration of pre-Hopao Revolution borders and the reconquest of the south. This was a previously dying ideology starting in the 1970s, however, was revitalized following the NDP's triumph in the 2012 General Elections under Chairman Tai Chia-hao, who became president. Before 2012, the NDP had been securing victories at the municipal and rural levels, garnering special support within the Republic of Wanlikuo Armed Forces. The National Democratic Party has dominated elections since then.

Organization

The Central Committee Leadership is the principal leadership of the National Democratic Party composed of the Chairman, the elected leader of the NDP chosen through a vote by its members usually conducted along with the nation's general elections. The Chairman appoints three full-time Vice-Chairpersons, the deputy party leaders of the NDP. However, the second-highest-ranking position within the NDP is the Secretary-General, the party chief of staff and the principal lieutenant to the Chairman. The Secretary-General can, in turn, appoint three Deputy Secretaries-General. The rest of the Central Committee Leadership are the directors: the Policy Committee Executive Director, the Organizational Development Committee Director, the Culture and Communications Committee Director, the Administration Committee Director, and the Party Disciplinary Committee. These five directors hold leadership positions in individual standing committees within the party.

Within the Legislative Yuan, there is an appointed caucus leader, in this case, the incumbent Speaker of the Legislative Yuan. Party chairmen may run for president, however, they have to resign as chairman; President Kao Hsieh-jen was the National Democratic Party chairman from 2028 until his election in 2031.

Ideology

The National Democratic Party practices three 'core' principles known as the 'Kuo San Chu-i' (国三主義) or the Three Principles of the Nation inherited from the rightist factions within the preceding Federalist Party. This was, in turn, partly inspired by the Republican Party's Tzuyu Wu Chu-i (自由五主義) or the Five Principles of Liberalism: nationalism, democracy, universal equality, welfare, and duty. The Federalists, particularly the conservatives, criticized their doctrine as being too broad, western, and surprisingly anti-cultural. The 1930 Wanchuan famine was a disaster for the Republican-led government as they were scrutinized for violating the five principles. Nationalism for failing to unite the nation; democracy for the temporary suspension of habeas corpus, civil liberties, and arrest of several political enemies; universal equality for mistreatment of the Wanchuanese; welfare for the lack of humanitarian support and the famine; and duty for improper handling of the famine and rebellion and the violation of the Tzuyu Wu Chu-i.

'Kuo San Chu-i' was first coined by Dr Ts'ao Kuei Ying, the first Policy Committee Executive Director, in 1993 to unite Wanlikuo and to resonate with the patriotic clamor amongst its voter base after the Federalist Party was defeated in 1992 and its imminent dissolution. These three doctrines were meant to be the antithesis for the anti-culturalism and alleged anti-nationalism of the Republican Party (despite being an integral part of the Tzuyu Wu Chu-i.) The NDP slowly accumulated political influence and secured regional, and then later national, offices. The Republican Party also declined in the late-2000s-to-early-2010s due to corruption and political scandals. They lost seats in the Legislative Yuan in the 2008 General Elections and eventually lost the presidency following the succeeding 2012 General Elections.

Conservatism (Pao Shou Chu-i)

The National Democratic Party considers 'conservatism' or 'Pao Shou Chu-i' a key tenet and the most important among the Kuo San Chu-i. Wanlikan conservatism has, traditionally, been more inclined to social conservatism rather than fiscal conservatism; welfare from the state is considered suitable for the nation. There is a central belief within the NDP that the government should be involved in conserving traditional Wanlikan values—that is the preservation of paternalistic Confucian doctrine and beliefs. Social order, the traditional beliefs, translates to harmony and cooperation within the society. The NDP thus respects and protects the role of hierarchy and the shunning of individualism within the society. This conservatism is reflected in governance and the civil restrictions in Wanlikuo, from the criminalization of cannabis use to the current illegality of abortion and much more.

Wanlikan nationalism (Mintsu Chu-i)

Wanlikan nationalism or 'Mintsu Chu-i' is believed to be an innate, inborn feeling by the NDP that only fades away upon exposure to 'anti-culturalism' and 'anti-patriotism' such as communism, western liberalism, and laissez-faire capitalism. Mintsu Chu-I, in its most basic form, corresponds with the defense and service to the country and people. Although entirely separate, the NDP heavily correlates conservatism with nationalism; both going hand-in-hand with each other. Nationalism benefits from conservatism to uphold it while conservatism grows from the 'need to conserve the traditions and centuries-old beliefs of the nation through the defense of the country.' Wanlikan nationalism, thus, influences Kuo T'ung-i or 'National Reunification.'

National reunification (Kuo T'ung-i)

The southern provinces fell into chaos and warlordism following the Hopao Revolution, after the dissolution of the Jin empire. Wanlikan expeditions in the 1930s and 1940s failed to take territory from these warlords as they had formed the Nanlien, the Southern Union. After repelling the northerners several times, the Wanlikan government eventually grew weary of trying to wrestle back control of the south and gradually lost support throughout the later decades. National Reunification eventually fell out of public consciousness and died as a national policy. However, since after the 2012 General Elections, the ruling NDP has made it their duty to revive the idea of reunifying the pre-1921 borders and have implemented subjects within the academic curriculum, starting in elementary school, to 'cultivate' Kuo San Chu-i, especially Kuo T'ung-i, amongst the youth and propaganda to galvanize the general population.
