The Socialist States of India wrote:I get your point but what if there is no party or candidate who will consider their interests in policy making. Then they are forced to choose between multiple harmful options, it may be like choosing the less deadly poison. So this matter can be debated much more imo. Compulsory voting needs to bring along with it responsible candidates and parties who work for the interests of all groups.

I understand but at least in the 'West' countries which have compulsory voting have many parties which represents interests of different groups.
For e.g. Australia and Luxembourg.

Wait you guys get jailed for not voting? I thought it was a joke

I don't know about Australia but here 1st time offenders are fined lightly while repeated offenders are fined heavily.
Exceptions are there for disabled and other types of physically depressed groups.
And if your are over 75 and a citizen you are not required to vote unless you register yourself.
And if you are 18 or above, registration for voting is compulsory.

SRVy wrote:Do you really think Brahmins(5%) middle class (4.86%) can make any difference even if they vote??
The moment these people become active hate politics against them rises. Even if they vote they will get nothing. So, they enjoy the holiday.

Yes, it matters. Also, middle class is around 30% in India. If they vote collectively, that's a lot of power. This "my vote doesn't matter" attitude has a negative effect on our democracy.

But whom one is going to vote for is not affected besides getting to know the actual majority opinion

Honestly for someone who wasnt aware about this before, it sounds very opposite of democracy. Somewhat like the horseshoe theory.

Not voting imo is a crime.
So it is a great policy.

North Korea Choson wrote:But doesn't India have like 80% turnout in its elections?

Talking about Keralam..

United Gleb States wrote:Y'know government policies don't always have to be caste specific? And neither is it the fact that all social groups will make mutually exclusive decisions.
While yeah the effects one faces does depend on the class, mostly middle class facing the brunt of the worst and very few if not none of the benefits, the 4.86% figure seems to be generated out of thin air. The actual fraction of middle class was around 1/3rd if i remember correctly or roughly 33%. Thats a big enough bloc to make a difference. Go vote if you can!
I personally would not have voted even if I were eligible simply because none of the parties resonate much with me, both of them are crooked pigs tbh.

Although that doesn't change the fact that being a general middle class male sucks and will continue to suck in the future, especially in the academic and jobs field. And it only worsened with the breach of the 50% reservation cap with EWS and now they're proposing to breach it even more. Right now only less 40% of the seats in engineering colleges are unreserved, rest 60% are all reserved which accept candidates even with 10 times worse ranks (In fact, IITBombay CSE branch for Gen only accepted the guy with All India Rank of 67, while a reserved guy with 1000+ Rank got the seat.) So yeah just work hard to get out of here so your kids don't have to face the same stuff.

“The government policies don't always to have caste specific ”
Welcome to Bihar, where politics run upon pure caste basis. It's bhura baal saaf Karo here. In Karnataka you have lingayats, I don't wanna mention the situation of Tamil Brahmins. Opposition is ready to have caste census. Manipur is burning due to this sc/St issue. You need to sharpen your knowledge about Indian politics.

Regarding middle class, if you don't pay income tax you are not a middle class. Just because you call yourself middle class won't make you one. So my figure is actually very close to reality. 33% middle class lol. If you think you earn 50,000 will make you middle class than I'm sorry. It won't.

30% means 43.2(144 crores' 30%) crores people. Government working on 2011 census provides food to 80 crore PPL. If you add 43.2+80 crores it makes 123.2 crores but we have only 121 crores. The data is flawed.

Note down government policies works on census and financial management depends on current situation. Actual middle class is near 7.4 crores. I hope this helps.

If you can't see why every party is giving freebies than it's bad yaar.

And everywhere in world PPL vote in blocks not individually. The moment minorities (upper caste hindus mainly Brahmin, tax paying middle class, etc etc) will start voting like others, hate politics against them will rise.

Opposition is doing obc, sc/st vs general + muslims bjp is doing hindus + pashmanda vs Ashraf.

But the census data is from 2011. Surely the number of middle class people has risen drastically. I'll admit I didn't quite understand what you said about financial management tbh. I do see why parties give freebies.
Everyone has a right to not be discriminated against, so one should not have to worry about hate politics. (I am not saying it doesn't exist, I am saying it shouldn't exist)
