NEW! - Government: Doc Announced as Thane of Roleplay
Doc (French Albania) was recently announced as the new Thane of Roleplay, filling a vacancy left by the recent thane election when neither candidate who ran met the requirement of posting a campaign. In a reply in-topic, Doc stated an intention to "get RP back up to speed, and re-establish it as one of the pillars of our community". His term will run through the end of the next thane election in March.

Culture: Yarn Fest II Inter-regional Contest Open
Yarn Fest II is a contest hosted by Lands End to determine which nation can write the best yarn! The contest will run through January 17th, during which you can write and submit an original story revolving around the theme of winter. Submissions will be judged based on entertainment value, creativity, and grammar, with the scores and winners announced after the contest ends. The last contest was won by our very own Elbbsas (Pogglind), and it would be excellent if one of our members won again! If you're interested in writing a story for the contest, check the dispatch below for more information as well as our Yarn Fest forum topic for regional contest discussion.

Welcome to Yarn-Fest! This is a creative competition created to promote the sharing and spreading of ideas, and communication between both nations and regions alike. The goal is simple, to determine who can write the best yarn! For those of you who don't know, a yarn is another term for story. Given the time frame this competition is set to take place, the theme for this event is Holiday, so all submissions must be Winter themed. This event will be judged by Torranta and Good ship revenge. The current Heavy-Weight Yarn-Spinning Champion of the World (last round's winner) is Pogglind.

The rules are simple. Those who fail to comply will be disqualified.

    1. Nations will have 2 weeks to write and submit their stories. (January 3-17). You may not start writing your submission until the 2 weeks begins.

    2. There is no limit to how long your story can be. While you will not be disqualified for sending us 39 pages, you will make us judges very sad.

    3. You may only submit ONE story. Those who send in more will have any and all stories eliminated.

    4. This round's submission MUST be WINTER themed.

    4. All submissions must be sent via telegram to BOTH Torranta and Good ship revenge.

    5. Your story must be FICTIONAL, and it mustn't be plagiarized. I will know if you do.

    6. Each judge will score the stories out of 30. 10 points for Entertainment Value, 10 points for Creativity, and 10 points for grammar.

    Format:

      Entertainment Value: 10

      Creativity: 10

      Grammar: 10

      Total: 30

    7. Judges, note that some sentences may be grammatically incorrect for dramatic or figuarative emphasis. Do not take off points if you recognize this.

    8. Judges may score in decimals up to the hundredths place. For example: 9.24. No further.

    9. The final score is the average of both judges' scores.

    10. The story with the highest score is declared the winner, and is granted bragging rights and claims the title, "Heavy-weight Yarn-spinning Champion of the World" from the current champion, Pogglind, who earned a perfect score last round. Both the nation name and winning story will be recorded for posterity.

    11. In the unlikely event of a tie, the nations in question will be given an extra week to write another story to be re-evaluated.

    12. Nations are permitted to cooperate on one story. The story will be credited to all nations associated with the story.

I will make a Dispatch containing the entries with the final scores, and another Dispatch without the entries but including a more detailed scoreboard. I may also record the top yarn from each region. Nations may request a comment/critique of their story to be sent to them via telegram after the competition has ended.

Regions included will be:

Special Guest Regions

Torranta,
Chief Trade Officer
Lands End

Allouxia requests permission to construct a military base in Cote azure and in Casmaru.
OOC: Both bases being about the size of Bagram Airbase in Afghanistan and comparable to Ruher Valley Airbase in Allouxia.

Thalasus, you have yet to make a response in our RP.

Also, apparently Allouxian police has access to Main Battle Tanks.....huh.

What for? There is no strategic value of there being a base. No enemies, no threats.

Saleemistan

Well, it seems I almost completely forgot about my nation, and all of you guys. Can somebody please catch me up on all the things I missed while I was M.I.A?

Cote azure wrote:What for? There is no strategic value of there being a base. No enemies, no threats.

Well there's Azuran troops in Rüher Valley Airbase..mainly tho so the Allouxian Military can respond more quickly to situations, if troops are stationed in more areas the logistics will go alot smoother.

Also the Allouxian Military can benefit from training in different environments. Casmaru has deserts I'd assume ur environment has some jungle/tropical areas given ur place on the map

Director Kirn looked at the email and thought for a brief second. "Do we still have the audio recording of the calls Valenski made to his thugs who placed the bombs at Our Lady? "Ja" replied one of computer operators. "Get me that recording and get me a hold of an agent in San Salvacion" ordered Director Kirn.

-San Salvacion, Thalasus-
"What kind of beach side restaurant doesn't serve Margaritas?" Asked a man who looked like an ordinary tourist. Suddenly the man's phone begun to ring, he looked down at the screen. "Boss Man" was on the display. "Make it a beer" said the man as he walked to a table and sat down to answer the call. "Was ist es" he asked "The IAT is playing hardball, they want "actual evidence" get ones of Valinski's goons and report back." said Director Kirn on the other line. "Jawhol" replied the agent as he hung up.
-N.I.S HQ-
"What we got?" asked Director Kirn as he looked at the big screen. "Looks like a ordinary cartel delivery, although we got some interesting fellows with them, there aren't Thalasians for sure". said one of the computer operators. "Escantheans, ground team you got the green light make best efforts to take alive atleast one of them".

-San Salvacion-
"Green light" said one of the agents as he loaded his fire arm. Two white vans pulled into the warehouse where the cartel dilevery way being made. Two teams of N.I.S agents disguised as Thalasi FP moved in. After a brief Shoot out with the cartels the N.I.S managed to snatch one of the Escantheans, he was then taken to a apartment in the Favellas where he was integrated. "It's simple, you either call ur boss or I put a bullet in your skull," said an N.I.S agent as he pulled out a phone and handed it to the Escanthean. He then pressed the gun directly on his forehead. "Call" he said. The Eacanthean dialed the number on the other end was the man himself, Valenski "Что это?" he asked. The agent pulled the hammer down of his pistol. "Чего тебе чертовски? Ответь мне" said Valenski. The agent now annoyed shot the Escnsthean in the head. "Control did you get that?" asked the agent. "Got it" replied Director Kirn.

-N.I.S HQ-
Director Kirn now with the Audio recording of the call Valenski made before the bombing of Our Lady and the recent call just recorded and send both of them to the IAT

This is more then enough evidence Mr. Director

The Director sighed and rubbed his temples. Maybe this was a waste of time. “Okay. So Valinski is still in Thalasus, and he appears to be working with people from Escanthea... But that is not evidence that he was involved in then Our Lady attack, which is my number one priority.”

OOC: no, he needs evidence that Valinski or his men planted the bombs that destroyed the hospital SPECIFICALLY. Seeing that he’s in the country or active is not enough. You can BS it or do an RP on it, but if you don’t get it in soon or decide to stop cooperating with the IAT the Mercer administration will fall.

BEGIN IAT INTERNAL DISPATCH

Published this morning in the Agde Tribune. Worth a look.

What began as a minor regional conflict has gradually escalated over the past weeks to extend to an entire theater of war. While Arbanian Imperial Military (AIM) forces are seeing great successes in the Feminamian front, driving the Thalasians from their regional stronghold, and the Spanish Legion, along with hastily-assembled militia troops from the Debuterres, continue to hold the island chain amidst Thalasian bombing, missile strikes, and naval artillery salvoes, insiders report that the government's hope is for a speedy resolution to this war.
"For all that the Thalasians are communist-leaning, sneak attacking rats," an unnamed senior figure in the Trade Ministry told us, "this war is nonetheless doing serious harm to trade relations across the Great Ocean - most trade traffic has been redirected around the continent, adding weeks, if not months, to transportation time and billions of freks in extra costs. It's harming international relations, particularly with the Feminamians, on whose soil we've conducted our most successful operations, and it's doing immense harm to the people and infrastructure of the Debuterres. While the war hasn't come to the homeland yet - and indeed it's unlikely to unless we're escalating the conflict even further - last week's commitment of the Third and Fifth Carrier Battle Groups to the conflict are seriously weakening our defensive posture on the home front - a worrisome trend, given the recurring conflicts between Allouxia and Balticia, and our continued judicial and political efforts to reclaim the northern islands from the German peoples."

Sources from within the War and Foreign Ministries, however, had more positive outlooks. Said Ambassador to the Illyrian Republic, Dr. Elias Dufresne, "plummeting Thalasian trade in our sphere of influence is pushing other states towards us. They've had a substantial soft-power advantage over the past two or three generations, and while the Exarch has engaged in much more of a pivot towards our close neighbors, and made greater efforts towards ending our long period of effective isolationism, this would have been a very difficult lock to break without a conflict such as this. At the end of the day - this is a fairly limited war, but the gains we're making and will be making in the diplomatic and trade arenas may well mean that we come out of the war ahead, regardless of the actual military outcome - and the Trade Minister agrees with me, which is why she will personally be leading a delegation to The hiberno-scottish republic to carry out and cement a trade agreement in the very near future."
With the same positive tone, but a different note, General Grace Volker, commanding the Homeland Battle Group, reminded this reporter that 'the Thalasians have been driven from the Feminamian main island, and steady, measured offensives are seeing what remains of their FOBs dismantled across the island chain. While the Navy has yet to engage the Thalasians in a decisive battle, there is no doubt in my mind that they will certainly look to pursue one with the greatest possible haste, to demonstrate that even their greatest asset is no match for the might of the AIM.'

This reporter was additionally fortunate enough to gain an audience with the Exarch himself, who had this to say on the matter of the war. "There is no doubt in Our mind that the brave soldiers of the AIM have done heroic things in the defense of Our nation and that of Our friends in Feminamia and the Debuterres. And while We condemn the cowardly act of aggression on the brave men and women of the IAS Resolution, as well as the 46 who lost their lives in that craven attack, We are, however, fully prepared to see this come to a peaceful conclusion, particularly given that the Thalasian people have themselves suffered an equally cowardly terrorist attack on a medical center, for which We offer Our condolences. It is in light of this that I, personally, wish to make clear that there are currently hundreds of captured POWs who have expressed their greatest desire to return to their homes and families, and to do any less than to accede to their desires appears to Us to be a betrayal of the supposedly democratic principles on which Thalasus and its society is based upon."

The last thirty-three days of this conflict have, fortunately, largely spared Arbanian lives. And though it is evident to this reporter that our great nation is winning in this war, it is also evident that the Exarch, as ever, has the courage and moral fortitude to be willing to suggest peace even as his enemies falter before him. Whether this is because of his strongly held internationalist principles, or simply an open heart that cares even for his enemies, either is truly the mark of a great, even inspired leader of men.

Isaiah Henri-Drexel
Isaiah has been the Tribune's correspondent in the Imperial Palace for eight years, and his recent book on the Exarch's cabinet,
Leadership in the Modern Era, was last year's eighth best-selling book.

My take: As with anything from the Tribune, a heavily biased article in favor of the Exarchate. Interesting note that the censors did not remove General Volker's sharing of naval battle plans - suggesting that it's an obvious misdirection. The question is whether it was intended to be obvious, and thus purely a propaganda play, or if they're assuming we'll assume that something shared in the open would definitively not be their battle plan.
Suggest military intelligence does some closer digging.

NationStates World Arts Fair

It's that time of year again! Bring on your creativity and enthusiasm because the World Arts Fair is back in town. Last fall, we had a great turn out, with nations from all over NS joining in to share artwork and writing, even some musical compositions. We had lots of spectators who joined in to support our artists and it was a success. Here's to hoping that this year is even greater and richer than last year.

There are many ways for you to get involved...

Be a Volunteer

We want your take on what the World Arts Fair should be, so don't forget to Link sign up to host! - The South Pacific will be hosting this winter's fair.

Submit Your Work
Unmistakably, the fair wouldn't operate precisely if we didn't have artists to submit their artwork, songs, and words. So we need your help to celebrate culture in this festival. Send in your photographs, musical compositions, poems, short stories, pottery works and anything else you can think to share with the NS community. We are here to celebrate all the diversity and creativity around us, so please Linkshare your work even if you don't want to be judged!

Each category (visual arts, performance, writing) will be judged separately, with its own panel of three judges. You may choose what you share with the community for panel review or simply to get your work out there to others.

Be a Judge
Have you always wanted to be the Simon Cowell of the group, or are you more of the Paula Abdul type judge? All are welcome to Link submit a request to be considered for arbitration roles. You will converse and confer with other judges to decide the winners of each category. However, please note, not all requests will be granted - don't take anything personally. :)

Uh...we're across an ocean from each other, the majority of the conflict is happening in Feminamia between probably corps-level elements, and in the Debuterres/Cabo Claro between about maybe one division on my side (with only about two regiment's worth of professional military, including air force units which are really the only thing keeping these guys in the fight, and the rest being largely untrained, small-arms equipped militia units) and probably a carrier battle group on the Thalasian's side.
There's no real intention (on my part, at least, I don't know about Ashton) to genuinely pursue a decisive naval battle, because one that would be far more expensive than it would be worth, and two the Thalasians have larger navy to begin with.
So one, the hospital ships don't really have anywhere specific to go, two, they would run the very real risk of being fired upon by either side thanks to their armed escort, and three, they're not really necessary in the first place because large-scale loss of life is relatively unlikely to happen.
