Alternate facts is trying to scurry the correct answer for being political incorrect.

V2 missile was NOT didn't have as an objective to reach space or achieve orbital velocity.

So although technically were the first object to reach space, for the purpose of the question of who got there first the answer is the: the USSR with the Sputnik I on October 4, 1957.

It is like the consideration of astronauts of the pilots of the X-15 or the astronauts the made suborbital flights following a ballistic trajectory like Shepard and Grissom.
