I actually got called a communist in the next town over for wearing a mask. Town is known for being incredibly white trash and is a local black sheep in most respects.

I gotta disagree TBH, not to sound like some anti American phasey liberal but the US used to be on top with the best infrastructure in the world and a society that valued individual freedom, as well as the largest industrial base on Earth. Now our public infrastructure and services are decades behind, we have more corruption, more class divides, and a country that is so culturally divided to the extent many regions are as culturally distinct as many nations with their own values and identities. Perhaps I am just a Northwesterner whose adult content is essentially the doug flag and holds a copy of Ecotopia close to his heart but to me I have more values and traditions in common with someone from BC than someone from Alabama or New Jersey. The Boomers got jobs and homes at 20 whereas I no longer have a job and home ownership for someone under 40 is a pipedream

Interestingly enough that is pretty correct I think, from what I had to analyze for my essays, the ww2 era economic settings were in some ways pretty similar to the Green New Deal, not to mention, if we go back farther, even people like Teddy Rosevelt had similar values, including that fact that higher gov spending is good for the nation. What I find ironic is that the very nation we have grown from has been sabatoged by the economic self interests of single figures and the fact that (mainly in places like the south and midwest), politicians have taken part to an extent in jerry mandering and 'sabotaging' of public education to the point where the wealthy white communities have better acess to things like voting.
