You Can Look At Recent Forums. The AN (Above Nation) Ones Are The Most Fun In My Opinion. Or Write More Factbooks, That Wastes Lots Of Good Time Thinking Of Ideas :smirk: I Honestly Feel The Same Way Though lol

What is conlang?

Slanska wrote:What is conlang?

Basically, it's a language created artificially by a person rather than naturally. Tolkien's Elvish language, Klingon in Star Trek, the languages in Game of Thrones, and Esperanto are some of the more well-known conlangs.

That's fair, lol. I think it's probably the baseline, it's a lot of effort for a relatively small payoff. I was just curious because I couldn't place your motto's language, and since you listed Slanskan I thought it might be a Slavic conlang or something!

Well, I will use Esperanto for mottos, musics, arts and etc. The meaning of motto is "For Nation and Leader!"

I didn't realize "gvidanto" was Esperanto for leader, neat! An initial /gv/ cluster seems kinda tough for an International Auxiliary Language, but I guess that's probably Zamenhof's Polish shining through, lol.

XKI Game-Side

This month our favorite Regional Pollster, Jabberwocky, brought us two polls themed around the holidays! The first one asked Islanders if they agreed to Christmas music in public and the second one asked them if they liked eggnog for the holidays.

In the first poll, there were 170 voters: 16 (9.41%) said “no” because Christmas music in public was annoying, 70 (41.17%) said “yes” because it placed them in the holiday spirit, 18 (10.58%) said “no” because it infringed upon their rights as non-Christians, 12 (7.05%) said “yes” because it is spiritually uplifting, 18 (10.58%) said “no” because of the commercialism advertised in those songs, 20 (11.76%) said “yes” because they could hear the sleigh bells ringing, and 16 (9.41%) said "Humbug” in a pirate way to express their feelings that Christmas music in public is insincere and hypocritical.

In the second poll, there were 129 voters: 44 (34.10%) said “yes” because eggnog is delicious and essential for the holidays, 73 (56.58%) said “no” because it is an abominable, ghastly concoction, and 12 (9.30%) said “yes” as long as the eggnog was heavily spiked.

Much like last month, it was miserable to look at every December RMB post...well, maybe I’m exaggerating. The RMB was slightly less busy than the previous month, but I do know one thing that didn’t change: the abundance of absolutely hilarious moments!

Meet The Nation

This month our Emissary Update staff interviewed Jabberwocky, the longtime Regional Pollster.

Haivon: Hello Jabberwocky! Could I ask you some few questions for the Emissary Report?

Jabberwocky: Of course! Fire away.

Haivon: In first of all, how did you joined NS and why did you decided to join 10000 Islands?

Jabberwocky: I first read about NationStates four years ago inside the back cover of a novel by Max Barry; perhaps it was Syrup. I thought it sounded intriguing and tried it out. I drifted about for a few months, trying out various regions. As a WA member, I read Lenlyvit's proposal to Commend Europe. The bit about defending appealed to me. I asked Ms. L how one becomes a defender; she suggested The Grey Wardens or XKI. Thus the 10000 Islands became my home; here I remain.

Haivon: After you joined the region, what made you stay here?

Jabberwocky: As I strolled around the grounds, everyone was friendly and helpful, open minded and tolerant. That atmosphere appealed to me then, and still does.

Haivon: When and how did you become the Regional Pollster?

Jabberwocky: Nearly three years ago, the Ministry of Labor posted a job opening for Pollster to replace an outgoing Pollster. I applied for the job and somehow fooled them enough to get it. Back in those days we had two Pollsters.

Haivon: How do you usually get the ideas for those polls?

Jabberwocky: I get ideas from...the news, from real life. Or I make something up. Or I steal from someone else.

Haivon: In the past, you used to do a monthly regional newspaper called The Mad Surfer, which was a predecessor to the Emissary Report, and many Islanders, myself included, were once interviewed by it. Is there anything about it you would like to tell us?

Jabberwocky: TMS was a spur of the moment flash in the pan that got lucky enough to tickle the fancy of the reading public, probably due to its irreverent approach. Not a precursor to the Emissary Report, it ran concurrently. But, as trends do, TMS eventually lost its luster. Fortunately, the Emissary Report is a worthy successor.

Haivon: Well, I suppose that this is it. Is there anything you want to say for the interview?

Jabberwocky: Yes. The best is yet to come.

Haivon: Thank you for your time!

Jabberwocky: Are you kidding? For an old pal? No problem!

Hope to see you all next month, your XKI Update Staff is signing off!
