Huh...I'm with you there, I don't know how I feel about that. If I'm going to organize this the way I'm thinking, you may potentially have a category all to yourself. Expect to hear from me again.

An obvious problem with the quiz is that it is on a site advocating libertarianism. That alone makes me wary of it.

Well, have completed it anyway, though the libertarian bias in choice of questions is staggering.

The bias is evident and I was unsure of using it due to that exact reason. My goal was to get an overall ‘ballpark’ analysis of each persons political positions. Options for political positioning tests are limited... I’m interested to see how this comes together.

Hello guys! Haven't tried the quiz anyway.

Western continental divide

I believe a political compass with more choices would be a better poll. This political compass has only 13 variants (not counting line spots) of left/liberal given, and last poll 38 nations registered in the left/liberal category. There will almost certainly be significant overlap. While I appreciate your effort to find a simple one that we can do quickly, in my opinion a more complex compass would be a better representation of the nations in Forest.

The second option would be to use the Political Compass. I’m not opposed to repurposing/reorganizing the initiative. Thoughts, opinions?

So I took the political test, and it said I'm an anarchist, it needs to tell me something I don't know.

Whatever test you go with you'll have people posting criticism of its assumptions/bias/methodology so you'll just have to roll with a certain amount of that. If Western continental divide's suspicions are correct and with this quiz nearly all of us are lumped together as left/liberal then you could always try something that would introduce more distinctions afterwards.

Thanks for switching to left rather than liberal in the terminology, the modern US usage grates a bit on Europeans who see liberalism as an inherently centre to right wing philosophy.

And for those saying the quiz had too many right wing assumptions, somewhere round here I've got a link to a test that matches you to a faction in 1917 Russia... wait! Where are you all going?

While some of you folks across the Atlantic are being heavily rained and snowed on, the west coast of Scotland is exceptionally dry. For the past month the destroyer of worlds has been keenly watching the development of tadpoles in a pool near our house. She became so attached that when the pool began to dry up she was determined to intervene. The last two weeks have seen us carrying buckets of water from a nearby stream to the vanishing pool on a daily basis, but today she was finally prepared to accept that this was a losing battle. Frog parents don't give a damn, but by this point we were invested.

With her reluctant agreement we caught 18 survivors in tubs, wished them good luck and released them into the biggest pool in the area, up in the nearby forestry. To our surprise we also caught an adult newt. She realised that newts eat tadpoles so I thought she'd be quite hostile to it, but it was judged to be cute, extensively photographed and then re-homed to a separate forest pool away from the tadpoles. We called it Tiny, because it was my newt. Dad jokes = best jokes.

I took that one too, and I'm Left/Libertarian (-4.38,-3.59), as opposed to the Left/Authoritarian the other one gave me. I kinda agree with this one more.

It is definitely a better option. It is not as short but it definitely captures a more nuanced position! I am a super-nuanced left-libertarian (-10,-10) on that one. :3

I'm taking this one now. I find it more nuanced than the other test, allowing for more flexible stances on social and political positions and I agree that it might show the political diversity between individual Forestians a bit clearer.

EDIT: I'm in the Left Libertarian section:

Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: -6.0

Turbeaux Extremist! I always knew.

It is very short and specific in current affairs.
Politicalcompass.org may take longer, but it is much more accurate, and it results in coordinates that make it much easier to "draw".
Well, it gave me almost the same result, the difference was a few centimeters to the right or left.
Economic Left / Right: -0.38
Social Libertarian / Authoritarian: -0.05
yeah yeah ... you can say that I'm on the top of fence, but it's better to stay on top of the fence than to blindly fall for one's side or other, the beginning is good, the problem is the ending, when you find out that it is not all that you had imagined.

If what we want is a nuanced test, there is 9axes. There is a very long version (200 questions) and a shorter one (50 questions).

Took the long one. It's actually a pretty nice quiz. Especially since there isn't a different webpage for each question. That would be a nightmare. I do think it's more of a fun thing, rather than a Forest census thing, since it would be hard to visualize 9 axis.

Federal vs. Unitary: Neutral (51%-49%)
Democracy vs. Authority: Democracy (70%-30%)
Globalist vs. Isolationist: Globalist (73%-27%)
Militarist vs. Pacifist: Pacifist (24%-76%)
Security vs. Freedom: Freedom (35%-65%)
Equality vs. Markets: Equality (70%-30%)
Secular vs. Religious: Religious (26%-74%)
Progress vs. Tradition: Neutral (59%-41%)
Assimilationist vs. Multiculturalist: Extreme Multiculturalist (15%-85%)

Fun stuff. According to the last axis, I am an extremist, but for having multiple cultures. That seems like the last thing that would have extremists to me, but whatever.

The bigger problem with these sorts of quizes is the underlying assumption that people possess choice, and that they choose from among available options using reason modified to comply with some internalized ruleset of which they are consciously aware.

**retrieves a brain-in-a-jar from dustbin**

On the contrary, neuroscience suggests that causal decision making of this sort is an illusion, and biological neural networks arrive at decisions and initiate action potentials before the individual in question is even consciously aware that a decision is being taken to begin with (as described in Scientific American: https://blogs.scientificamerican.com/mind-guest-blog/what-neuroscience-says-about-free-will/). I mean, this seems obvious to a hive mind like FloorNet which facilitates decisions and then distributes the results to its drones, intentionally reversing the causal chain messaging to make it seem like the drone initiated the decision, thereby ensuring a higher level of compliance with FloorNet's commands...

...

What? Where did I get this brain? Nevermind that...

**stows brain**

Look, the bigger point is this: "choice" and "free will" are just evolutionarily useful illusions that facilitate social interactions by making it seem like individuals are responsible for their actions, even though they probably aren't. Whatever ideology people invoke to justify their actions is illusory -- an ex-post-facto rationalization for a decision already taken and with which they must comply for the sake of survival.

Why so many different ideologies? Well, if behavioral actions are normally distributed, then you'll have some North Korea-like statists at one tail end, Anarcho-Capitalist Rands at the other, and the vast majority of individuals falling across the middle, with "society" at the mean point of the curve. Like any other hive mind, various individuals will waggle dance and headbutt each other (see NS General for a living example), inhibiting various ideological networks until an overall consensus emerges. That consensus will move around a bit over time, as the means skew one way or the other given stochastic factors.

But that's really all there is to it. Ergo, the ideology of any one individual is statistically meaningless. The really interesting question is where the collective falls. And the general recognition that no one ideology is really preferable than the other, as they're all necessary to ensure the emergence of a coherent return-to-the-mean.

**deep breath**

Now, who wants to play a game where we pretend that pure reason will help us prevail in the face of insurmountable statistical inevitability?

Some good news: I'm on track to finish my degree in a few weeks and then bide my time while I look for a job in the real world, which will presumably cut down into my NSing. I intend to continue on as an editor and sports RPer if possible, perhaps in limited capacity on both fronts.

Given that, for no specific reason but a confluence of factors, being a part of an active region doesn't seem to make sense for me anymore, and I'd prefer to retreat back into hermitage. Peace and blooms to all.

So I asked my resident primate to take the quiz: https://www.politicalcompass.org/yourpoliticalcompass?ec=-5.0&soc=-6.51

Said primate seems to generally agree with me that while "free will" is probably a complete illusion, it's nonetheless generally useful not to interfere in a drone's daily activities, as doing so may prevent adequate vacuuming and/or honey for one's toast.

This whole thing with the two tests reminds me of those Pepsi challenge commercials back in the day.
