What's the Ministry of Foreign Affairs been up to?

The short answer: a lot.

(This begins with Korsinia's election as Prime Minister)

For those who are interested, this is a brief explanation of the AoR/UNI bribery crisis in January:

The crisis began with accusations, in the form of a court case, against the Unity Party of bribery. Tensions had been growing between UNI and TPU for months, so while the case was never accepted and was soon dropped, the region exploded and many members of UNI, including our Foreign Affairs Minister Levantx, Electoral Commissioner USE two senators, and a few MPs left.

To make matters worse, an inter-regional organization that most in the region did not even know we had become an associate member of, the Assembly of Regions, accused the government of forcing the Unity party out and endorsed the 'Auctoritan Commonwealth,' a region that some disgruntled thaecians joined and was ruled by the same individuals who made up the Reformist Party back in July, as the "successor to Thaecian democracy". (The government had had nothing to do with the bribery accusations - Rayekka and Xernon, PM and Prez at the time, woke up confused and surprised on that Sunday. Thaecia's democracy was also never in question, not even to those who left for splinter regions at the time)

Things went completely out of control as people left to join splinter regions and the AoR was attacked. It took a lot of damage control and time, but the splitoff regions died out and everyone except for Levantx winded up returning

- We closed embassies with the Okchi Union because they no longer met requirements

- We opened embassies with The Allied Republic, a fun and friendly region which has a culture similar to Thaecia's own.

- We opened embassies with Heart, an affiliate of our friends at Force.

- At this time, we had every single ambassador position filled.

- Four embassies closed - Conch Kingdom, The Free Nations Region, Thalassia, and New West Indies

Now, for a short break to discuss those circumstances

As you may know, Thaecia, at the time, had released a WA wide telegram, a once-norm of the region.
However, this proved incredibly bad timing as just the day before, certain trolls that are believed to be from The West pole, where they sent Z00polis to troll the region. (They were previously located in North Legion, where they spammed our RMB and puppet flooded us, and before that The Norwegian Region Legion, where the infamous Zoopolis attempted to rig our elections.)
More to the point, they posed as an alternate nation of Zanaana and sent telegrams to all sorts of regions telling them that Kors's administration was interested in a merger.

This was a bit of a crisis in and of itself, and when combined with the WA recruitment, certain nations began coming up with conspiracy theories that it was all a sophisticated publicity stunt

Anyways, there was a lot of damage control to be done and a lot of high-minded figures were angry just about the 'merger' telegram. There wasn't a lot to tell them other than who we thought it was and that we definitely were NOT interested in mergers with any regions.

Things got even worse when Cerdenia trolled and flamed NSGPers on the forum, and later, Brototh and Cerdenia went in the NSGP server and trolled them there. Understandably, (but regrettably and unavoidably) more people in NSGP were convinced by this that Thaecia was a region full of trolls.

Indeed, the aforementioned three regions closed embassies - citing that they didn't want NSGP mad at them, that they considered WA recruitment 'poaching', and that they were angry at the trolls. Random people across NationStates let me know how horrible they thought Thaecia's government was and how poorly we were handling things.

If this wasn't enough of a crisis already, certain people in Enadia, New Western Empire, and I believe it was The Democratic Republic decided to issue an 'ultimatum' to the Thaecian Government, complaining that the government 'hated them' and demanded a number of outrageous things.

At this point, I was personally ready to give up Foreign Affairs completely - it was frankly insane and rather stressful.
But we really wanted to save the embassies if at all possible, so we spent a long drafting government statements, which can be seen Linkhere

The statements successfully and effectively dealt with the situation, and NSGP was placated. It was found that the 'ultimatum', while purported to be from all three of those region's governments, did not come from any of those three region's governments and none of them had as much as known about it - even though it was from people within TDR, the founder of Enadia, and the Prime Minister of the NWE. TDR, who had decided to close embassies, decided in light of the statements, did decide to abort the closure.

However, for reasons to this day unknown, the regions that had already closed embassies refused to re-open them. We literally and purposefully answered every single one of their complaints, but not one of the four embassies would re-open, even though they had all read and seen the statements had literally addressed every single one of their complaints. None would provide any sort of rationale - the only response we actually got from ANY of the four was from the FNR's President, who informed me that the statements changed nothing for them.

We, and I think rightfully so, gave up on re-opening the embassies.

- However, there was some silver lining - The East Pacific's WA delegate, Marrabuk, decided to fast-track the consulate and begin embassy construction

- Snowflame was appointed DFAM

- We opened embassies with 21st Century Rome, a large and cool UCR

- We opened a colony Embassy with Copernica

- We made a good run at the WA Gen-sec position :P

- We opened embassies with Hell, a very old UCR

- We opened embassies with Greater Middle East, a cool role-playing region.

We've been monitoring a situation in Alvaria, we discuss stuff

- We participated in an inter-regional event - Paradox 2020 - which was hosted by TEP

- We opened embassies with Greater Middle East

- We've tried to get an embassy with Europe, but certain leaders within the region have been stubbornly opposed to it - even though the people of Europe voted in a poll overwhelmingly for an embassy.

- Yesterday, the LCN brought evidence to our attention certain crimes and shenanigans perpetrated by The Islamic Country of Honour. The cabinet wrote up and released a statement in response, as seen Linkhere

The Foreign Affairs Ministry discusses potential embassies, votes on embassies, comes up with ideas, and discusses important happenings in other regions very often.

If you have suggestions, insights, or whatever, please let us know! We're working to make things happen. If you're not happy with what we're doing, let us know. We don't know why/if you are unhappy with the state of Foreign Affairs unless you tell us why/that you are!
