>>OVERVIEW

The Realm of Serpens Land, commonly known as Serpens Land is a sovereign nation located in the North Mesder Sea. The country has a total population of just over twenty-four million. Serpens Land's land area is roughly 461,385 km².

Serpens Land is a constitutional monarchy. They maintain a monarch as the head of state, but day to day duties of running the government is done by the Prime Minister. The current monarch of Serpens Land is King Edward II. Serpens Land uses the parliamentary system of government. It's parliament consists of two houses: the House of Commons elected via first-past-the-post, and the House of Councillors elected via proportional representation.

Serpens Land is a developed nation with a relativity high standard of living. Serpens Land is a growing power in the Western Isles. The south of Serpens Land is generally more developed and economically productive than the north. This is in part due to the division of Serpens Land in the first half of the 20th century. Serpens Land has been a member of Cooperative Union since 1968. It is also a member of RETA

>>ETYMOLOGY

Despite popular belief, Serpens Land is not named after the snakes that inhabit it's southern half. While the true origin of it's name is debated, the most substantial theory is that the name originally came from the native Serpans people. When British explorer John Eaton arrived on the island in 1723, the Serpans people who he came in contact with used the word "Serpans" to describe themselves. Eaton later used the word to describe the island itself.

The finished design is then mounted on scrolls such as hanging scrolls or hand scrolls. Another popular form of art in Serpens Land is ceramics. Ceramics are often painted with incredibly detailed designs. One of the most popular art galleries in Serpens Land is the Royal Fort Charlotte National Gallery. The Royal Fort Charlotte National Gallery houses the largest collection of contempary and historic Serpens Land art in the world.

Orchestras are a very popular form of music in Serpens Land. The Serpens Land National Orchestra - the best orchestra in Serpens Land recieves funding from the Serpens Land government. Other forms of music that have influenced Serpens Land culture are blues, jazz, country, rock and roll and hip hop.

Sport

Sport plays a major role in the day to day life of many Serpens Landers. Sailing is the national sport of Serpens Land, and large sailing events attract thousands of spectators each year. The largest sailing event in Serpens Land is the Broughton Bay Cup Regatta which is hosted out of the Royal Serpens Land Yacht Squadron from April 23 - 28. The Broughton Bay Cup marks the begining of the sailing season in Serpens Land and many Serpens Landers try to get their boats "in the water" before the regatta. The regatta is open to any boat wishing to enter and consists of four days of inshore racing and a race around Williams Island on the final day.

>>LOCAL GOVERNMENT

Serpens Land is a unitary state, meaning that all power derives from a central government. There are 5 provinces in Serpens Land each governed by a unicameral parliament called the Executive Assembly. The current borders of the provinces were set in the Province Act of 1958. Provinces are also a source of local identity and pride, and often compete against each other in sporting events and competitions.

The power of the provincial governments is limited by the Constitution of Serpens Land signed in 1965. The provincial governments have the power to legislate specific topics outlined by the constitution. Such topics include agriculture, education and public housing. Much like the national House of Commons, each provincial Executive Assembly is elected by first-past-the-post. The number of seats in each Executive Assembly varies based on provincial population. For example, the Chatham Executive Assembly has 153 seats, and the Northland Executive Assembly has 20. Members of the Executive Assembly are known as MEAs, and the head of the provincial government is called the premier. Each province also has a vice regal representative called a Lieutenant Governor. Lieutenant Governors perform the day to day duties of the monarch within each province.
