>>ETYMOLOGY
Despite popular belief, Serpens Land is not named after the snakes that inhabit it's southern half. While the true origin of it's name is debated, the most substantial theory is that the name originally came from the native Serpans people. When British explorer John Eaton arrived on the island in 1723, the Serpans people who he came in contact with used the word "Serpans" to describe themselves. Eaton later used the word to describe the island itself.

>>LOCAL GOVERNMENT
Serpens Land is a unitary state, meaning that all power derives from a central government. There are 5 provinces in Serpens Land each governed by a unicameral parliament called the Executive Assembly. The current borders of the provinces were set in the Province Act of 1958. Provinces are also a source of local identity and pride, and often compete against each other in sporting events and competitions.
The power of the provincial governments is limited by the Constitution of Serpens Land signed in 1965. The provincial governments have the power to legislate specific topics outlined by the constitution. Such topics include agriculture, education and public housing. Much like the national House of Commons, each provincial Executive Assembly is elected by first-past-the-post. The number of seats in each Executive Assembly varies based on provincial population. For example, the Chatham Executive Assembly has 153 seats, and the Northland Executive Assembly has 20. Members of the Executive Assembly are known as MEAs, and the head of the provincial government is called the premier. Each province also has a vice regal representative called a Lieutenant Governor. Lieutenant Governors perform the day to day duties of the monarch within each province.
