The People's Republic of Hurtful Thoughts is a gargantuan, economically powerful nation, ruled by Leader with an even hand, and renowned for its sprawling nuclear power plants. Its hard-nosed, hard-working population of 14.544 billion are either ruled by a sleek, efficient government or a conglomerate of multinational corporations; it's difficult to tell which.

The medium-sized, pro-business government devotes most of its attentions to Law & Order, with areas such as Social Welfare and Social Equality receiving almost no funds by comparison. Income tax is unheard of. A powerhouse of a private sector is dominated by the Arms Manufacturing industry.

The richest citizens live in sheltered private citadels, teams of painters are converting road signs from horse lengths to kilometers, the airship business has been driven out of the country by strict regulations and high fines, and children as young as eight can be found working in factories. Crime is a problem, probably because of the country's utter lack of prisons. Hurtful Thoughts's national animal is the dodo, which is also the nation's favorite main course, and its currency is the thought.
