In T.A. 2, Isildur marched north toward Arnor with his eldest sons: Elendur, Aratan son of Isildur and Ciryon. Near the Anduin, Orcs ambushed them. His sons fell, and Isildur fled, made invisible by the One Ring. He plunged into the river, but the Bane of Isildur slipped from his finger. Rising from the water, he was seen and shot down by Orcs.

Of some two hundred Númenóreans, only three survived. Ohtar and a companion bore the Shards of Narsil, sword of Elendil the Tall, to Elrond in Rivendell, where Valandil King of Arnor was fostered. The third, Estelmo, esquire to Elendur, was struck senseless and later found alive.

Nearly 2,500 years later, the The One Ring was found by Déagol and seized by Trahald, later called Smeagol.
