Region: The Federation of Anarchist Communes

In 1934 from the 5th of october to the 19th the asturian workers made a revolution and proclaimed the Workers' and Peasants Republic of Asturias and in some areas libertarian communism was proclaimed. The Spanish Republican Army with Franco at the head brutally repressed the revolution. The Revolutionary Committee led by Belarmino Tomás surrendered after running out of bullets and trying to stop the army from advacing with dinamite, the revolution failed long before in the rest of the country, and the revolutionary leader decided to make a pact. However, the army ignored it and looted the whole miners' basin, raped women and executed workers, this act gave general López Ochoa the name of 'The butcher of Asturias'.

The initial success of this revolution was due to left unity, represented by the pact of the "Workers' Alliance", signed by CNT and PSOE in the region. Also, the repression was the rehearsal for the Spanish Civil War which started just 2 years after.
Nevertheless, this revolution has been buried by the sands of time and it is poorly known and recognized among the left. So, I ask for the memory of one of the least known revolutions, which deserves much more recognition of what it is usually given.

VICTORY TO THE WORKING CLASS! VICTORY TO THE WORKERS ALLIANCE! PUXA ASTURIES!
