Not an obsession? I don't know if you are forced to be around teenage girls all day but they are most definitely obsessed with beauty. It's all they talk about. They wear brand new clothes pretty much everyday, they apply makeup in the bathrooms (and annoying kiss the mirrors to test lipstick), they look up pictures of clothes online on their phones, and they spend their lunchtimes looking at clothes in stores. Their shoes alone probably cost more than my entire outfit. It's an epidemic I tell you! An epidemic!!!

I don't really consider myself to be associated with them in most ways.

But the thing about guys being able to pull of plaid is absolutely true and I never really realized that until just now. Two of my male friends wear plaid flannel pretty much every day.

Trust me, it doesn't look good.

We just don't care what men look like, mostly because of their lack of choices.

We, on the other hand, are both blessed and cursed with choice. Equal parts gift and burden, with great power comes great responsibility, and other such cliches.

If we look bad, there were so many other choices we could have made, so we are blamed.

For men, they have no real choices, and generally face no repercussions from wearing the same old thing.

Of course, this could just be my opinion, but I quite enjoy speaking for large groups of people of whom I in no way represent the norm.

I knew a few girls who were obsessed with beauty, sure. And yeah they were pretty goddamn annoying, so I avoided them, cause they didn't like me much anyway. I knew more who weren't. One who was into cinematography, and would spend her time editing videos or writing scripts. Several who were big manga fans and would spend their money on buying new volumes of manga rather than new clothes - or they'd get nice new clothes for cosplaying. One who was very, very into Jesus, and refused to wear makeup cause it wasn't modest. A few who wrote a lot of fanfiction. One who made terrible Instagram comedy videos every goddamn break, and also rapped a lot. Also terribly. Some of those did also care about beauty, but that didn't mean it defined them.

There is a lot of variety in teenage girls. Don't write them all off just cause of the loudest ones :P

Also, the answer your question, I think American schools are quite shallow. Everything is so spread out, I haven't seen a flight of stairs in absolutely ages!
