Royal Joseon Armed Forces is a military organization of the Great Kingdom of Joseon. The commander-in-chief is the emperor/ empress, and the commanders, including the Ministry of Defense, are under the command of the commander-in-chief.
Joseon adopts a conscription system, which requires adult men over the age of 20 to serve in the military for one year and five months. Women can volunteer as non-commissioned officers or officers. The discharged soldiers are assigned to the reserve army for five years, and the reserve soldiers receive three days of military training a year while living as civilians.
Today, the Royal Joseon Military is classified as the second-strongest military in the world.
Immediately after the establishment of Joseon in the 14th century, the Joseon army was operated by slightly modifying the organization of the Goryeo army. It was a military structure named '2 gun 10 we', which means 2 units of the king's royal guards and 10 units of the army in charge of local defense and police work. '10 we' was also called 'Uiheung sam gunbu'.
Through the Imjin War and the Qing invasion, the organizational structure of the Joseon army was reorganized. The Joseon Army was organized under the organization 'Oh Gun-Young'. The Oh Gun-Young is divided into five units: 1 elite unit, 3 units organized to counter the Chinese invasion, and a defense unit for the capital.
After Joseon accepted Western culture and institutions, the Joseon army attempted to reform once again. It was to consolidate five units into one army and recruit the people to recruit more troops.
In 1887, the Joseon army was mobilized to prevent the second invasion of the Qing Dynasty. At that time, the Qing Dynasty tried to colonize Joseon to respond to continuous Western invasions and find a breakthrough. Unlike the first invasion, however, the Joseon army defeated 300,000 troops of the Qing Dynasty at the border area and captured tens of thousands of prisoners.
In 1910, the Joseon military repelled Japan's maritime provocations. At that time, the Joseon Navy defeated a Japanese fleet that attempted to capture Dokdo island and Ulleungdo island. The battle did not lead to a war between the two countries, but it raised political tensions between the two countries.
World War II was the time when the Joseon army stood out the most. When the Pearl Harbor raid triggered the Pacific War, the Joseon military prevented the Japanese invasion from the East Sea and put military pressure on Japan's mainland, adding to Japan's military burden. This was successful and eventually, Joseon became one of the major victors in 1945.
After World War II, the Joseon army changed again. The Army was divided into the Armed Forces(standing army), and the Reserve Army. This structure continues to this day.
In the 1950s, Joseon began secretly cooperating with France to develop nuclear weapons. This was due to the government's decision to intuit the power of the atomic bomb and expand national security and political influence. Eventually, in 1960, Joseon succeeded in developing nuclear weapons jointly with France.
However, due to the success of nuclear development, the U.S. stopped cooperation with Joseon and cut the amount of aid. Joseon did not want U.S. aid to be cut, and it tried to elicit U.S. aid while maintaining nuclear weapons.
When the U.S. intervened in Vietnam, Joseon sent 100,000 troops and the navy to Vietnam to help the U.S. Although the war ended with North Vietnam's victory, the United States began to support Joseon again.
When the Gulf War broke out in 1990, Joseon sent air forces and fighter jets to help the multinational forces. The war ended with the victory of the multinational forces and Joseon gained important practical experience.
The government agency responsible for the military in Joseon is the Ministry of National Defense. The Joint Chiefs of Staff are affiliated with the Ministry of National Defense, and the chairman of the joint chiefs of staff is the commander of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.
There are 3 headquarters in the affiliated departments of the Joint Chiefs of Staff: Army Headquarters, Navy Headquarters, and Air Force Headquarters, respectively. The Army is under the command of the Army Headquarters, the Navy and Marines are under the command of the Navy Headquarters, and the Air Force is under the command of the Air Force Headquarters.
The Strategic Command, responsible for nuclear weapons and intercontinental ballistic missiles, does not belong to the Army Headquarters, Navy Headquarters, or Air Force Headquarters, but is independently assigned to the Ministry of National Defense. In case of emergency, nuclear weapons can only be launched with the consent of the empress/emperor, prime minister, and minister of defense.
Joseon's defense budget accounts for 4% of the country's total GDP. This is higher than other countries, because the political conflict with China, where Joseon borders, is intensifying, and relations between Russia and Joseon are not so good.
