With all this talk of being politically correct and replacing "Happy New Year!" with "Happy Passage of Time!" in common dialogue post yesteryear I humbly request that there be a celebration that is sensitive of my cultural values in which we do not acknowledge time as legitimate and valid, we simply recognize that things change. So I propose that instead we all say "Happy Changing of Things!" Of course I only ask this to truly be universally acceptable and culturally sensitive.

Happy New Year to those celebrating it!
How's that? When it's a lunar new year then I'll write "Happy Lunar New Year".

It's been quite awhile, that was quite a long nap. It's good to see some familiar faces around here :)

WA News, "It's Life, Jim, But Not As We Know It" Edition. The General Assembly resolution AI Coexistence Protocol was passed 9,222 votes to 3,833. So, don't unplug HAL, he won't like it.

Now up for vote is a proposal on the "Rights of Sapient Species". If you recall, about a month ago, there was a successful campaign to repeal GAR #338, "Protection of Sapient Rights", because the resolution author, Excidium planetis, recognized it had flaws and wanted to replace it with a better version. Well, here's the better version, according to them. The author seems to have done their homework, as the new proposal has a solid definition of "sapient being" and closes the loopholes regarding underage or mentally incapable members of sapient species. Definitely worth a Yes vote.

WA News, "Beware of Kennyites Bearing Gifts" Edition: The General Assembly resolution "Rights of Sapient Species" was passed 12,483 votes to 2,795. Catgirls everywhere rejoice!

Now up for vote is a simple proposal, a "Ban on Booby-Trapped Aid". It's exactly what it says on the tin--it makes it illegal to use humanitarian aid as a weapon by disguising explosives, harmful chemicals, etc. within it. Pretty straightforward, really.

Have you SEEN some of the nations that send representatives to the WA?

I take that as a yes. Unfortunately or maybe fortunately my nation has never made contact with nations that would di that. At least that I know of.

Hello there! ☻

Nice to meet you all!

WA News, "Oops, Try Again" Edition. After garnering 11,721 votes in favor and 3,124 votes against, the proposed "Ban on Booby-Trapped Aid" was discarded by the WA Secretariat for a category violation. Apparently the proposal was listed as a "Moral Decency" resolution when it should've been "Human Rights". The two categories have considerably different effects on your stats, so it's important to get that right. We expect the proposal will be resubmitted with a correct category soon.

Currently there's nothing up for vote, nor anything likely in the queue, so we're kicking back.

WA News, "Oops, Try Again" Edition, continued. As expected, the author of the recent proposal, "Ban on Booby-Trapped Aid" that was removed on a technicality has resubmitted it. They've chosen to submit it as an "International Security" resolution, which probably does fit better than "Human Rights" and certainly better than "Moral Decency". It's already made queue and should be up for vote shortly.

Meanwhile, currently up for vote is a proposed "Landmine Safety Protocol". A little history is in order here. Way back in the early days of the World Assembly, GAR #40, "The Landmine Convention" was passed. It was a comprehensive ban on the stockpiling and use of landmines. The resolution was rather controversial due to its wide-ranging effect, making illegal all kinds of landmines, including modern versions that self-deactivate over time or on command when their military usefulness is at an end. The resolution stood on the books for quite a while until about a year ago when it was repealed (by GAR #304). Since then, there has been nothing on the WA books to outlaw any kind of landmine.

The proposed resolution here is designed to correct this. It outlaws landmines, but specifically excludes the self-deactivating variety. It's a compromise solution; whether you agree with it probably depends on how strongly you feel about the use of landmines in war.

It's been a while since i logged in to nation states. How are you all ? Good to see The Diaspora Church of The Eternal Kawaii still active :)

It's been a little slow here, huh. Is it because people are back to school? Turnip Paradise makes a good point though, shout-out to Eternal Kawaii for being on top of things :D

Thanks for the shout out. And, keeping on top of things, we're proud to announce that the General Assembly resolution "Landmine Safety Protocol" was passed 12,764 votes to 1,888. Compromise solutions apparently work.

Speaking of compromise solutions, now up for vote is a proposed "Right to sexual privacy" act. The original General Assembly resolution protecting sexual privacy, GAR #16, was repealed about nine months ago (by GAR #327) when it was pointed out that the resolution legalized incest. The current proposal reinstates the sexual privacy laws of GAR #16, but, like the recently passed landmine resolution, makes exceptions for nations to regulate sexual activity that could result in children born of incestuous unions, as well as allowing nations to regulate sexual behavior between people in positions of authority over their potential partners.
