Same thing happened to me with griffins in this game as happened with dragons in skyrim.
It took me several weeks of playing to realize that they don't have separate front legs and wings.

Well, that's becuase the current trend in fantasy is to be portrayed "realistically", or "possible", hence why most animals -even mythic ones that usually have six limbs, like generic European Dragons- now have four limbs like in nature.
