The FMLN was named after rebel leader Farabundo Martí, who led the people in an uprising to transform Salvadoran society in 1932. In retaliation, the military regime who had seized power in a 1931 coup, launched "The Massacre", which saw the killing of some 30,000 people under the guise of being supporters of the insurgency. A good number of those killed were peasants and members of the various indigenous groups that inhabited El Salvador. Thousands of innocent civilians were killed.

FMLN is guarded by The Farabundo Martí Armada of The Red Fleet against Contras.
