Frankly, ordinarily I'm willing to spend the time to point out errors, inconsistencies, logical leaps, or just plain mistakes, but frankly for the last couple days it's been sufficiently bleh that I just really don't care enough to. Otherwise I'd have weighed in on spider silk armor, gross violations of mare liberum, supposed mass deportations, proposals for moon colonies...list goes on and on and on.
I mean, sure, RP freedom as a principle is all well and good. But if 5 people have one idea about how to go about it, and then 5 other people have a completely different approach, at the end of the day there's either some kind of compromise or one side lays down the law, and frankly I'm okay with being the law-layer here since over the last few days things went from sniping at each other to just a torrent of what was becoming direct hostility. Frankly, rules help keep things fun (and if you disagree, compare sitting at a table and playing a board game (assuming you enjoy that; if not then some equivalent) to sitting at the same table and making up some game), at least in part by making sure that nobody loses their mind and goes off on someone, and if they do, that there are consequences for having done so - but also by setting some standard expectations, so that I can't, say, start a war with Allouxia and walk in with 50 million space marines and an intergalactic fleet when he expects things to be on modern warfare terms.
But hey, if you disagree, by all means give me your perspective. It's only fair since I've kinda laid mine all out here.

I get it man, the chat is autistic, but can you please Jesus stop being such a ball buster, it was funny at first but you're even more annoying than greater balticia. Either join the RP, or dont, but please stop complaining, it doesn't make us respect or like you more, it makes you increadably annoying.

You know what drives me to do better at anything? Someone setting an example, raising the bar, that drives me to do better. The same probably goes for a lot of nations in the RMB, so instead of 'pointing out' the problem at least 3 times a day every day, why dont you actually contribute to helping everyone, by giving us an example of your god tier RP skills and set the bar?

And really people can we just stick to what the US military is building and what NASA is using or building, please?! It really is no fun when everyone can just claim that they developed warp drives in 5 days and reached singularity in 2 weeks. The Foreign Ministry was left reeling by this sudden announcement, and Duc Theroux is reportedly considering the utility of attending diplomatic talks with the Thalasians as planned, given the sudden shocking move from His Grace.
Comments from political analysts we contacted suggest that while Thalasus would likely not agree to full independence, significant devolution of power to local government and the creation of an autonomous region may well be possible, but would certainly require a deft diplomatic hand to achieve, which is certainly a push for Duc Theroux to make his planned trip to Thalasus after all.

On the surface, the message was a call for two great powers to respect the will of the people, a move well in keeping with the 'elder statesman' image the Exarch sought to present, and suggesting a move towards a more liberal system of governance.
The underlying subtext of this message, of course, which would be immediately apparent to any member of the Thalasian Diplomatic Service, was 'hah try and finagle your way out of that one, try and protest having free and fair elections, ostensible democracy, or colonial independence, former colonial nation, go on'.

The Executive Office in Farbanti, for all their flaws, knew how to take advantage of an opportunity that has been handed to them. The French Albanians may have thought that they were buying time or at least spiting Thalasus by demanding a referendum for the fate of the Debuterres. However, if there was one thing the sitting government (or officials from any major political party that had seats on the Thalasi Senate) knew, it was how to manufacture consent, astroturf political movements, and to win an election. They didn't need to protest the free and fair elections, so long as agents from Thalasus were able to make the political discourse and process leading up to the referendum expensive and very unfair. So, despite frothing rage coming from the Foreign Affairs Office for the Exarch's trickery and no small amount of concern coming from the Sept for French Albania's apparent disregard for territorial treaties, Villa Thalasus took French Albania up on it. Their official response ribbed the Falbanians for their dispensation of the treaty and for their veiled martial threats.
"The United States of Thalasus has agreed to accept the terms provided by French Albania and will accept the result of any referendum that is carried out among the citizens of Cabo Claro, so long as it is free and fair. We do not need to be coerced or threatened into accepting this proposal, as the Thalasi government is confident that the people of Cabo Claro will make the right choice for their future and for the future of their relationship with Thalasus and with their former colonial masters in French Albania."

The news of Thalasus accepting the referendum broke, and hours later the floodgates were opened. The government had quickly moved to secure funds and promises of contractor work to pay several marketing and public affairs corporations that worked on the past few successful political and branding campaigns, and the Intelligence Agency of Thalasus polished off mass media tools they had kept in the attic to be used with blinding intensity on Cabo Claro's voting populace. Memes and pithy slogans began appearing on social media faster than popcorn popping at its peak, spewing forth from the disguised business and personal accounts that served as these corporations' bots and plastered on cheaply-bought ads on common internet services. Facepage, Chirpr, and Megagram were inundated with it: dark and shadowy images of French Albanian corporate aristocrats laughing (presumably at the suffering of Cabo Claro residents if they voted "stay"), images of Cabo Claro children and Thalasi children studying and playing together under bright blue skies, jackbooted Falbanian soldiers committing imagined atrocities against democratic protesters, real photographs of Thalasi naval personnel helping them during previous natural disasters (hurricanes are common in the region), infographics explaining why independence "wouldn't work", memes decrying the corruption of local leadership to further discredit independence, hashtags such as "#FAILbania and #ClearlyThalasus", the whole works. The real people on the net didn't need much prodding: eager to start arguments on the internet and for likes and shares, Thalasians and Thalasophiles in Cabo Claro began to share their views and memes relaying a positive image of a Thalasi takeover and a negative image of anything French or Albanian. By the time the Executive Office could even sit back to admire the chaos they had wrought, it had spiraled far out of their control. In a good way.

However, the Foreign Affairs Office still had work to be done. The actual terms of a referendum had yet to be agreed upon, and deciding on the terms would take almost as much effort as renegotiating the treaty that was supposed to cede the islands to Thalasus in the first place. The impromptu agency that had sprung up around the PR efforts in Cabo Claro had told the Mercer Administration that they could begin work immediately, but they couldn't guarantee a win unless they knew exactly how many votes they needed, from whom, and delivered how. Would it be first-past-the-post and whichever option gets the most wins, or would there be runoff votes and "second best" opinions were politically important? Was a majority needed to change the status quo? A supermajority? As soon as they knew these things, they could fine-tune their work, and turn their political hwacha into a political HIMARS. These questions were relayed to the French Albanians, as they would need to cooperate for this referendum to truly work.
