DEMOCRATIC GERMANY AND SOCIALIST REALISM

The forces of Capital have completed their division of the European continent. Their decision to cut Germany in half marked the completion of their imperialist project. An iron curtain has now descended upon Europe. This curtain will, in time, stretch itself across the world. Already there are signs that it will zig-zag across the global south. World history sits on the precipice of the long-awaited finale to prehistory. The outcome of the ensuing struggle will determine whether humanity will remain captured or whether it will free itself once and for all, whether history will begin anew or whether it will be overcome. Democratic Germany is to serve as the bulwark of socialism and the front line in the class struggle. It is only natural that this task should fall upon the home of Marx and Engels. The creation of the German Workers' and Peasants' State one year ago vindicated them, but it has yet to redeem their project, which can only be accomplished by the world historic triumph of the proletariat.

Armed with the accumulated lessons of the past, the class struggle continues on into the second half of the 20th century. To meet the task set by history, the German Democratic Republic must adopt a foreign policy consistent with the present stage of development and the requirements resulting therefrom. Just as in every other field the workers of the socialist community of nations are revolutionizing their vocations, international relations theory must be transformed. To that end we may begin by drawing upon the ideas already produced by the freed proletariat, among them 'Socialist Realism', the avant garde of the revolutionary proletariat in the world of art, which aims to express klassovost (class content) and pravdivost (truthfulness).

The GDR, as a state that has attained towards actually-existing socialism (real existierender Sozialismus), must conduct a Socialist Realist foreign policy, that is to say, a state policy mediating the global distribution of power between classes on the one hand and the global distribution of power between nation-states on the other. The former demands calculated struggle, the latter no less-calculated diplomacy. The aim of diplomacy must at all times be the advancement of the international class struggle and the enlargement of the socialist community according to a rational plan that takes into account the actual conditions underlying international relations. The appropriation of language which recalls Realpolitik is not incidental. Far from being an ideological affair, the liberation of the proletariat and the achievement of socialism are a matter of practical necessity. Klassovost (class content) is what underpins the whole field of international relations as the material reality underlying the actions of states. Recognition of this fact is what characterizes the class consciousness of the proletariat and its pravdivost (truthfulness), or its critical element.

Whether as Socialist Realism or by another name, the GDR's foreign policy must link up with the proletariat and Marxist theory, by which it and all other domains of state policy hang together. The Workers' and Peasants' State signifies the non-distinction between the government and the masses. International class struggle is the historical task and highest priority of the German proletariat, which, along with their brothers and sisters in the rest of the socialist community, are the most-advanced section of the global proletariat. Thus, it is the highest priority of the Democratic German state.
