Downtown Enigmastadt

This portion takes place in third person.

“You… who is she? This is… I don’t believe you!”

“Trust me, this isn’t what it looks like…! Please, don’t-”

A slap echoes in the middle of a random sidewalk, located downtown in the Illuverendian capital city. It breaks the serene silence around it as snow falls down towards the pavement. Couple of onlookers then express their shock by gasping, incapable of processing instantly on what they have just seen.

“Unforgivable…!”

The echoes of footsteps from a person running away adds up to the disturbance. Onlookers that were in the person’s way moved away from their path to avoid further aggression. Only one could comment that the person had never looked so seriously distraught. Soon after, grim silence takes over, and the snowfall intensifies.

All that the other person could do was to stare at what happened, with tears in their eyes, holding back from an emotional breakdown.

Chateau d’ Lusamine-Brandt, Enigmastadt

This portion takes place in Fritz’s point of view.

“I suppose we are all prepared for the Year-End Ball, aren’t we?” I asked my parents, as we were eating breakfast.

Ah, the moment I’ve been waiting for. Every end of the year, Illuverendian citizens are cordially invited to the Year-End Ball in the Enigmastadt Palace, as our way of celebrating the New Year. It’s a great occasion to take part in, and my family is no exception to it either. I can’t wait to see Alyssa in her fancy dress, too. Of course, I shouldn’t be so coy; I need to make myself look presentable.

“Why, yes, of course we are. We are the first to reply to the invitation, at your insistence,” Mother replied. “You are excited to see the Queen, aren’t you?”

“I… Well, yes, of course! It would be an honour, haha!” I chuckled and blushed. Mother, now is not the time to make me lose my marbles. Please.

“Teehee~ big brother’s losing it because he’s going to see his girlfriend!” my cheeky little sister interjected.

“Tabitha!” I crossed my arms. All I got was a nasty childish giggle in reply.

“Settle down, all of you,” Father then said. “It will indeed be a grand occasion to be present at the ball. Now, Frances, my dear - our tailor shall arrive today for our attires, ja?”

“Of course,” Mother then replied to him. “Our other branch family, the Rossweisse, are sending in their tailor today with our clothes in tow. Not to worry, we’re all ready for it. Just go ask our son because he’s so uncontrollably ready!”

“Mum!” I looked away in embarrassment and just ate my breakfast. “Let’s just eat, shall we??”

“Yes, yes. We should,” Father then replied. We proceeded to eat and talk about things for a while, all correlating to a ball. Suddenly, I receive a call from my phone. I thought it was Alyssa, but upon checking it, it was random. Who could be calling me?

“Pardon me,” I said to them as I exited the dining hall. I went to the foyer and answered the call. “Hello? This is Fritz.”

A cute voice replied to me in return. “Hallo, Fritzy!” Suddenly, my spine shivers really hard. It’s cold, but this one manages to freeze me completely. I stare at space as the voice continues. “I hope you haven’t forgotten me yet…”

“I… know that voice from anywhere…” I said. My mind spirals down into panic. This voice that I have not heard in a while, but I remember very well… No way. It’s the voice of my childhood crush. This is dangerous.

“It’s been a while… Hannah.”

“Teehee! I thought you’d forget the cutesy voice, Herr Writer,” she said over the phone. I could only feel panicky. I just hope she doesn’t do anything drastic. For the love of all things blessed, please, no. I don’t want to cause a problem with Alyse… “Heh… well it’s been years,” I replied, with a giggle that tries to hide an extreme amount of nervousness.

“Hey, hey. Why don’t we meet up today at the Hamakaze Tea House downtown? I really want to see you!” she said.

Oh no.

“Well-”

“Great! I’ll be there half past eight. Ta ta~” she then hung up without even giving me a chance to object. I sighed. I went back to the dining hall, trying to keep my facade up. But I ended up slumping on my chair, unable to even lift the cutlery… I can’t.

Meet her. Just this once.

No, I refuse. I cannot risk my heart’s loyalty to Alyssa…

Well, if you don’t, it’s going to be a humiliation to the Brandt name now will it? Your clan is renowned to be one of the most chivalrous nobles to exist. Not to mention, you belong in a former royal house. Now wouldn’t that be embarrassing if it makes it to the papers…

Fine!

“Are you okay, big brother?” Tabitha then asked concernedly. I didn’t know I had stared at my plate for so long, that one could think I was trying to break it with my cold, dead stare. I nodded to regain my composure. “I’m fine,” I said and smiled. But it was fake…

“Friedrich, finish your meal,” Mother then said.

“I’m… a bit full already, Mum,” I replied. “Sorry. I need to go do something, by the way. I have to meet someone.”

“Is it the Queen?” she asked.

“N.. no. A friend,” I lied.

“Alright. Well, you stay safe now. It is pretty cold, so bring a coat with you. The weather forecast today states that it’ll be relatively snowy, with moderate snowfall at noon. Make sure to come home early as well, because the tailor’s arriving.” Mother then smiled and picked up my plate to put it somewhere else so that it wouldn't be wasted.

“I will.” I sighed and went to my room, slumping on my couch. No less than a few weeks ago, Alyssa and I were here, discussing things and her taking a nap… and now, this. Like a thorn in the flesh, she returns with a vengeance. Why must she come back now, anyway? It was just puppy love for crying out loud. I’ve aged enough to distance myself from that, in addition to the fact people’s desires change.

No point in staying. I decided to wait it out a bit and wrote some poems privately, focusing on the woes of a man that has to deal with a thorn in the flesh. By the time the clock struck eight, I changed clothes and picked up my coat. The meetup place isn’t that far from our estate, so thank the higher beings that I won’t have to cause something so scandalous by bringing my automobile.

Arriving first, I went inside the tea house and chose a table a bit close to the windows so that she could spot me so easily. So far, the weather has been relatively okay, with light snowfall. I check the clock… quarter past eight. Let’s wait a bit longer.

“Excuse me, sir, are you going to order something?” one of the waiting staff approached me.

“Oh, yes, soon. I’m waiting for someone to arrive,” I said. “I’ll let you know when they’re here, thanks.”

“Understood.”

Finally alone again, I then spot her walking in the direction of the tea house. She’s surely changed a whole lot, nearly the same height as Alyssa even. Her brunette hair stands out as usual. The anxiety in my head is killing me, though… What if Alyssa sees me with her? I can’t let her have the wrong impression.

“Hey! Fritzy!” she then called as she entered the door and saw me.

“Not too loud. You’re disturbing people in the tea house,” I said. “Hello. It’s been a while indeed, Hannah.” She then raced to me and gave a big hug, much to my anxiety doubling itself further. But I can’t stop myself from hugging back a bit.

“Sorry~” she then sat down on the seat in front of me. “I heard you became an upstart author already now, huh?”

“Well, not really upstart. I’ve been an author for a while now,” I replied. She giggled and decided to call one of the waiting staff, so that we could order. “What do you want?” she then asked. “It’s my treat, so order away!” Ngh. I ordered something modest, contrary to what I want at most. She then orders her favourites which I didn’t mind. I tried to distract myself by looking outside, with my hands shivering from the strong anxiety I’m experiencing right now.

“Are you okay?” she then asks. “Is there someone outside bothering you?”

“No, I’m just checking the weather,” I said. “I don’t want to be caught by a lot of snow later.”

“Hehe. I have a lot of things to discuss with you today. I miss you sooo much!” she then said, unaware that I am completely trying to run from this. Why did I even agree? What’s a little scandalous accusation on the paper going to do? Defame me? Impossible. But no, you complete dummkopf, Friedrich!

“I nearly forgot about you, honestly,” I said, with my honesty coming out. “It’s been years, after all…”

“Don’t be so disappointed,” she said. “My family actually went to Memester up north for a while to try opening a business venture there. It’s doing well so far.”

“So why return here?” I asked.

“We got homesick.” She laughed.

I chuckled and waited for our order to arrive. I just want this to be over with.

Living Quarters of the Enigmastadt Palace

This portion takes place in Alyssa’s point of view.

“Now, Your Royal Highness, please tell us what you think of this!”

The family’s renowned royal tailors then revealed a very elegant gown clad in Illuverendian violet. It was partly similar to the wedding gown I had seen with Fritz on the very day he confessed to me. I blushed upon seeing it, but my eyes couldn’t help but to sparkle upon seeing how extremely posh it looked. It just irradiated this queenly energy from it, and I know Friedrich would completely go head over heels when he sees this~ fuhehe.

“Well, Alyssa?” Mother then smiled at me. “I’m sure this is personally curtailed to what you desire the most. Of course, to prevent delays, I have other designs that are also ready to be presented-”

“I LOVE THIS!” I exclaimed and pointed at the gown. “This, please! I’ll wear that proudly at this Year-End Ball!”

“I- well, do you not want to see the other choices you can have!?” Mother said while chuckling.

“Hmmm… I suppose. Let’s see them nonetheless,” I said. The tailor presented other options - a black gown, a red gown, and many others that I find particularly generic. The black one is admirable, but… we’re not mourning the year now, are we? Unless one interprets the Year-End Ball to be just one big glorified mourning ceremony for the passing year as it “ends”, of course. I doubt one would be that weird.

“The black one is tempting, but we’re not in a wake,” I said with a deadpan expression. It surely threw Wolfgang off as he spat his tea and began coughing then laughing. “Honestly, it is very admirable and it could rival this violet one. But I just don’t find it fitting - especially to a ball where we’re supposed to celebrate the upcoming new year. If this was recoloured to another one that appropriately fits the occasion, then I’ll take it.”

“We don’t have time to do that anymore, Your Royal Highness. I suppose you shall take the violet one?” the tailor asked.

“Yes,” I nodded. I can’t wait to wear it, though, honestly. The temptation is killing me at this point. Although, it will be a mess if I let myself wear it right now. That will never do. Especially if he sees that I’ve messed with it even prior to the greatest ball ever… yet. My simping for the gown ended prematurely when my brother just tapped me on my shoulder, startling me.

“I know you’re excited to try stuff out, Alyse… but hold your cavalries,” he said. “Even I told Annika that she mustn’t show me what she will wear for the ball. Nor did I ever show what I will wear, either. Let it be a surprise, will you?”

“S-shush,” I blushed and looked away. “I’m just really excited about wearing it, t-that’s all! After all, it’s… who knows, someone finally dances… with me, instead of me having to watch people…? Ack!” He then patted me much to my chagrin.

“Oh, big sis…” he then chuckled. “Nonetheless-”

“Oh, I just remembered.” I suddenly said. “I have to go later, around 10 or 11 o’clock. I’ve got to meet up with Jeanne and try convincing her to join. Although I know it’s going to be futile, it won’t hurt to try.”

“Where would you meet up with Lady Albemarle?” Mother then asked as she overheard.

“Oh! Um, downtown,” I said. “She says she’ll take some time so I’ll be there first. Typical behaviour, honestly.” I chuckled, since she has a tendency to take some time. It should not be a problem, though. I hope…

“Make sure not to dawdle and waste time, now,” Mother then said. “You have very important responsibilities and other things to fulfil today. We have to finalise other affairs, so do your best to use your time properly.”

“Yes, Mum.” I smiled. “I’ll be going back to my room. I’ll prepare myself and possibly relax for a while. Toodles~” After bidding them farewell, I headed back to my room. The excitement still ran in my veins, but I felt a bit of anxiety- despite the fact that I will nonetheless have a ‘date’ with Fritz on that day, I am still the event’s organiser - and I must remain formal.

I sighed as I entered my room, sitting down on my bed a bit. I took a look at my phone for a while. It’s 09:10. I’d better get ready, there’s no use sticking around here doing whatever Valkyrijas know. Per the usual I took a bath, but since it’s winter I decided to use a hot one. Unless I want to freeze myself to death… no thank you to that. I have many more years to live. Finishing up, I changed clothes - appropriately wearing a winter coat, too.

“That’s a beautiful-looking lady right there,” I said to myself in the mirror, breaking a smile and a wink. I checked the time - 09:35. Time to go. It’s not that far away, so if I’m late I won’t mind. Walking outside of our estate, I notice that the weather seems to be changing. More snow's coming down, so it's a good idea I wore a coat and some boots. Hopefully it won't get so deep downtown.

Several minutes pass and I arrive downtown. Jeanne isn't here yet… I sat down on a bench, texting her to inform that I was already at our rendezvous. Nearby, I could see a tea shop.

I then receive a text.

"go to the tea shop now XD"

Alright, let's go. I stood up and made my way towards the tea shop. It's a pretty quaint one, and it stands out. As I got closer to the door… I bumped into two people exiting the shop- and to my shock, it was Friedrich… and… a girl…

Wait… a girl? As I stood up and looked, she was all snuggled up to his shoulder! It's not Tabitha from her looks, too! What in Bianca's name is happening…!?

"Ah! Alyssa…!" he then said. "H-hello… this isn't…"

It dawned to me. My heart sank… I could feel the tears accumulate so quickly into my eyes. I stared at him, and my sadness quickly flared into anger. Who wouldn't… because this IS betrayal!

"You…! Who is she!?" I pointed to the wench who continues to snuggle up his shoulder, unperturbed and even tilted her head. All forms of my etiquette burned up… at this point, there is only nothing but anger in my veins. "I can't believe you, Friedrich! You two-timing…!"

"This… this isn't what it looks like…! Trust me, Alyssa!" he said, panicking.

Then what is this, huh? A stage play? You accursed menace!

TAKE THIS!

I then slapped him so hard, it resonated and drew lots of attention… but nothing can ever stop my anger. I… I have been… betrayed… and people wonder why I do not want to exit my comfort zone! As I looked at him however… he fell down, much to the girl's shock, and was speechless.

"Unforgivable! I hate you! I BLOODY HATE YOU!!" I exclaimed as I began to cry. I ran off, with tears still cascading down from my eyes. I could see the glances of onlookers, gasping in shock… but I don't care. The damage has been done.

I took a turn directly into a park and cried my heart out, specifically behind a tree. I couldn't stop myself… every time I think I was done, I would start sobbing again. Is the fate of a Midford destined to be sad and romantically unsuccessful…? I don't know anymore… All I can see are my tears, creating dampened spots on the snow.

I then texted Jeanne that our meetup was cancelled, while still crying. For a while, I sat down hugging my knees, ignoring the beeps of my phone… Only then, after finally fully crying my heart out, I stood up again, taking the bus that plies a route passing by the Palace. As I embarked, many people were surprised by my presence… as I do not usually use public transport on my day-offs.

I then got a window seat, paying for my fares beforehand. As the bus went on, there was only heavy snow. Looking at my phone again, I see a myriad of notifications…

"20 new messages from Fritz♥️"
"Fritz♥️ called you. (5 times)"
"Jeanne messaged you: 'what happened?'"

I made no effort to look at what he said, or what even Jeanne asked about, and put my phone into do not disturb mode. Several minutes pass, and the palace is within my sights. I disembarked and walked inside, feeling all glum and having an emotionless expression on my face.

"I'm back." I said, as I entered the Living Quarters, in a stoic voice.

"Ah, you're bac… hm?" Mother said then looked at me. "Did something happen, my dear? You look off and I sense an aura of complete disdain coming from you."

"It's nothing, Mum." I said bluntly and sat down on a couch.

"Alyssa, I know you are lying. What happened?" Mother then confronted me, standing up and crossing her arms, as well as giving me a stern, commanding stare.

I then told her about what I saw and what happened… which made me terribly cry lots again… thankfully, Mother hugged me tightly. She patted my back as I went into a fit of crying once more.

"I feel your pain, my dear. I am very sorry…" she said.

"Good grief," said Wolfgang as he overheard it. "How dare he harm you like this? Something must be done. I will-"

"Please, please, don't do any retributional action," I said… "It's… no use, just like me finding a man that would make me happy…" I stood up, letting go of Mother's embrace and went back to my room, devastated and heartbroken. I can feel Mother's concerned stare as I left. I shut the door, lied down on my bed, and hugged my stuffed bears afterwards. I did not even bother to change my clothes…

Sigh…

Am I really destined to end up being miserable for the rest of my life…?

I love you… yet you betrayed me before I could even disclose what I truly feel for you.

I hate the world…

After nearly six months in hiatus, Royaume continues.
