I've been thinking more about a story that would have been an actual book written in 1909-1920 or so about the misadventures of two young men in Glengo (like "Burmese Days" but not emotionally destructive, more like an older, fictional Terry Pratchett with anti-colonialist sympathies)

And the relevant part is that it starts in the Australian postal system (the two characters work there on account of their parents being wealthy Englishmen and nepotism) where after a blunder of some size (no idea what) gets them sent over on "holiday" (read: extreme punishment due to unruly natives and "humidity" or some Pommy complaint)
