Madeira makes appearance at Monaco GP

Sofia Madeira, second seat replacement for 2026 onwards, appears at 2025 Monaco Grand Prix to fill in for an ill Antonio Giovinazzi.

Antonio Giovinazzi was confirmed positive for Influenza and was unable to attend the 2025 Monaco Grand Prix on Sunday. Sofia Madeira, who will be replacing Giovinazzi from 2026 onwards, participated instead in her first ever Formula 1 Event and was the first woman to participate in the FIA World Championship since Lombardi in the '70's. Qualifying in 11th on the grid, Madeira managed to overtake multiple drivers throughout the race before settling into 9th by the race's end, scoring herself 2 points and putting her ahead of Giovinazzi.

In the post-race interviews, Madeira stated that "it was really special to race for Alfa Romeo this year, even if it was for a single race. I look forward to racing with them again next year." Madeira later went on to state that, "when I was growing up, it was always a dream to drive for Ferrari, and I remember always going with my friends to Portimão so we could see those red cars race around the track," a sentiment that has been shared with many current and previous Ferrari drivers like Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz Jr.

Madeira's first Formula 1 Grand Prix wasn't without controversy though. Sebastian Vettel and Jehan Daruvala were taken out early in the race, with Max Verstappen retiring from the race after suffering a severe mechanical break on the car. Combined with an abysmal pit stop for Sergio Perez, Mercedes were able to make it out with a decent haul of points.

Madeira is slated to have her next, and final, Formula 2 round later this month at the Circuit of the Americas in the United States. Madeira's Formula 2 Championship lead could be wholly decided in that round, as her battle with Guanyu Zhou is close. When asked about it in the Monaco post-race interview, she stated "I'm confident that I'll be able to win the race, that's the goal." Whether that confidence will pay off, however, is not entirely clear.
