Today in the Alpyrea International Press (only available internationally):
Alpyrea joins new ICARUS and RIO organizations, seeking greater foreign involvement

The Department of Foreign Affairs has announced Alpyrea's membership in a new international organization called ICARUS in a statement issued late Friday night. Joining at least 9 other nations, the Commonwealth is apparently pursuing a more active role on the global stage, despite its ongoing economic struggles, internal unrest, and government controversies.

"We must broaden our horizons and explore our options for the sake of harmonious economic and technological growth," the announcement read. "To this end, the Federal Council is proud to announce Alpyrea's entry into ICARUS and the recently established RIO."

ICARUS, or the Intercontinental Common Association for Resources, Unity, and Solidarity, is an effort spearheaded by the Federal Republic of Danera to bring together nations around the world in various fields of advancement, incorporating the previous International Association of Arts and Sciences (IASA) as part of its program. According to its founding statement, ICARUS "... aims to help skyrocket the scientific development of its member-nations, help developing and emerging countries to get a prominent place in global economy, act in solidarity and compassion to enforce and better define civil and sapient rights, and ultimately to strengthen the relation of all nations of the world, not just of its own member-nations."

Among the provisions for ICARUS are internationally-passed legislation, streamlined trade, a truly global IASA, and a voluntary defensive pact. While the Dept. of Foreign Affairs has not yet outlined any specific plans for involvement in ICARUS, the Federal Council's strong recent focus on economic growth and development suggests future attempts to expand Alpyrean trading.

RIO, or the Romaxian International Organization, is a continental organization participating in ICARUS, standing for member-nations located in and around Romaxia including the Balkvla Islands, New Andureo, Slotheria, and Venovica. ICARUS itself is intended to be a multi-level, multilateral organization, connecting member-nations themselves part of unions such as RIO that organize their own activities, including trade. Whether there will be a new boost in economic ties around western Romaxia remains to be seen, however, given Alpyrea's past and staunch nationalism and capitalism. Regardless, continued moves towards globalism and an economic opening of Alpyrea are to be expected as the Federal Council further establishes its legitimacy and global role.

More than 200,000 sweep Alpyrea in defiant protests against HDF, FC
19 June 2019

According to local sources, visiting foreigners, and even limited information online, somewhere around 200,000 to 500,000 protesters have gathered into rallies, demonstrations, and marches across the Commonwealth this weekend in protest of Federal Council rule.

Flags of various labour unions and organizations, including the Workers’ Progressive Socialist Front (WPSF), were on full display in cities from Bel Arios to Nanmen to the capital of Port Sakiba where thousands demonstrated against the current government, in the face of Homeland Defence Force (HDF) troops and garrisons who were overwhelmed by sheer numbers. Calling for “people’s rule” in Alpyrea, the protesters had many demands and causes but were united in their dissent against the Federal Council, which has held the country in its grip since October in a still-ongoing National State of Emergency, a situation now popularly referred to as simply “the Emergency.”

“Despite months of rebuilding and recovery, the heavy-handed rule of monopolists and capitalists remains as strong as ever,” a statement from the Port Sakiba branch of the WPSF read. “The wealthy and the powerful have gained on the backs of the workers, with their profits now drawn from all across the Basalt Coast and the Highlands.

"We are here today to shake the nationalistic corporatism of the current government."

The streets were filled with simpler messages of all kinds, with most if not all targeting that current government as well as the powerful private sector. Most prominent were perhaps the large signs reading "No More War" (aimed at Silverwings Armaments Corporation and Alpyrea's involvement in multiple conflicts abroad), the mass chanting of "Our labour, our land" (a popular WPSF slogan), and the simple banners declaring "We Will Win".

Isolated incidents of violence were reported, with attempts at crowd control beaten back with improvised weapons and even bare fists. High pressure hoses were reportedly deployed in at least Port Sakiba, though on-the-ground information remains elusive. The vast majority of federal troops were apparently withdrawn, however, with thousands of demonstrators brazenly defying Emergency restrictions on mass gatherings and political dissent without consequence. The Federal Council has not yet made any comment on this or the flare-up of public dissent in Domardost earlier this month during their city elections. How long the Commonwealth will hold, whether the Council and the HDF act or not, will certainly be interesting to see.

FC announces supply aid, refugee programs as Cessnian civil war continues
15 June 2019

The federal Department of Foreign Affairs announced the opening of a "blanket expedited refugee process" as well as intentions to ship humanitarian aid for civilians in war-torn Cessnia and its breakaway states Thursday night. Citing an "explosion of violence", the statement condemned the fighting that erupted shortly after the Daneran-Cessnian War's conclusion and the installment of a republican form of government in Cessnia.

"Recognizing the complex historical and political situation in Cessnia, the Alpyrean government wishes to offer a blanket expedited refugee process for all citizens of any state or nation formerly incorporated in the Republic of Cessnia, with an individual process offered for any and all who seek temporary or permanent residence in Alpyrea," the Department announced.

"The Federal Council wishes for a satisfactory conclusion to this fighting and the establishment of peace in the name of prosperity and sapient life."

While they did express wishes for an end to the fighting, the Council also attempted to condemn a lack of international response so far in the conflict. The anarchist territory of Erostia is being assisted by Propatria, a union of Syndicalist Communes which voted in an anarchist system in early May; other states including Rosenillington, Wispoce, and Yrovi have also broken off of the fragile nation. However, so far at least West Bengalis and Slotheria have similarly sent humanitarian aid missions and/or opened their borders, and there is word of meetings on the Cessnian situation within the ICARUS organization that Alpyrea is a member of. This runs somewhat counter to previous Alpyrean activities, however, as Alpyrea has actively sent military equipment and aid to Cessnia during the aforementioned Daneran-Cessnian War, while attempting the same in the Jasonville civil conflict that resulted in the Confederation government's withdrawal to northern Romaxia. The Silverwings Armaments Corporation, one of Alpyrea's largest entities and employers, has benefited from the Federal Council's backing as a major economic force in the impoverished country, and the company has frequently pushed its influence to increase arms production. At the same time, Alpyrea has suffered a drop-off in immigration rates as the Emergency continues, which could explain the appeal for immigrants and refugees. Regardless, the Council's attempt at diplomatic leadership may further boost its image abroad as it undergoes challenges at home.

Military buildup reported in Domardost, Port Sakiba as dissent builds
13 June 2019

Local sources indicate increased agitation and movement around Fort Palmer in Port Sakiba and Fort Glaston in Domardost in the weeks following Domardost’s contentious elections and the mass public action that has taken place since.

A buildup of troops from the Homeland Defence Force (HDF) and unmarked private security forces both in and around the cities of Domardost and Port Sakiba has been observed after Domardost’s elections earlier this month, along with general political unrest in Alpyrea. Movement of vehicles, troops, and even aircraft has been reported in and around the two cities in particular, while sentry posts, checkpoints, and garrisons have been strengthened across the Commonwealth as a whole. Most notably, security perimeters around Liberty Square and the approaches to Federal Hall in Domardost have been set up as possible sites for attacks and demonstrations of popular dissent.

A statement was released by the Department of Homeland Defence earlier today, simply informing of a “reorganization of security forces” in Alpyrea.

“This routine operation aims to boost defence capabilities and maintain order in our municipalities, during this time of national emergency and renewed Nationalization,” according to the statement.

As of yet, there have not been any overt actions undertaken by HDF or private troops against the public in spite of direct violation of Emergency restrictions, from curfews to mass gatherings to outright dissent against Council rule. However, with forces openly walking the streets and standing guard at street corners, the day enforcement comes may be the day Alpyrea is lost.

Final Domardost election results released, prompting rallies and counter-demonstrations
08 June 2019

Note: This is a continuation of coverage on the 2019 Domardost elections.

Final results for the elections in Domardost were released on Saturday morning, with the last ballots checked and verified in the remote rural community of Sacurdo through the night. While the Highlander People's Party's Marcus Wendel was already assured of victory on Thursday, he took the opportunity to gather supporters in another post-election rally in front of Assembly Hall shortly after final release at noon.

"We stand outside a terrible, perhaps even terrifying institution which has held our cities in its grip for more than a year," Wendel shouted to those assembled outside where the Federal Council meets. "But we stand united against tyranny, against corruption, and against exploitation across this Commonwealth, no matter if we are Highlander or Ariole or Alpyrean!"

The surge of the HPP may not come as a surprise to many, especially as resentment against federal rule continues to rise not only in Domardost and the Highlands, but across all of Alpyrea amid military-enforced national corporatism. Pre-Emergency strikes and citizen actions have been suppressed for some time now, and the opportunity to challenge federal authority was seized at once. What is surprising is that the Federal Council permitted this to happen at all, considering the level of control they are thought to have in Alpyrea and particularly in Domardost, where they meet and govern from. The announcement of city elections going ahead as scheduled may have simply been an opportunity to oust incumbent mayor and noted dissenter Lisa Fresno from the Council, but Wendel's outspoken defiance has attracted attention to the significant and broad anti-FC coalition in the Highlands where separatist "Sovereign City" and "Highlander Nation" movements have thrived.

There is speculation that the elections may have also been permitted so as to shore up federal legitimacy with the new National Liberal Party (NLP), however. Capturing 11.7% of the popular vote for the mayoral contest and 11 out of 75 seats in the City Congress, the NLP was a startlingly strong presence in the elections, underscoring how much support for the Council and Commonwealth there still is even in an especially unruly municipality like Domardost. It also detracted from Fresno's electoral base, again supporting the idea of an ousting attempt; in her place has come a blatantly anti-FC mayor and Council member, though, and the consequences of that are yet to be seen.

In the meantime, mayoral candidate and leader of the banned Free Highlands (FH) party, Alexi Tojama, addressed supporters at Liberty Square Saturday afternoon, pledging his "full support" for Wendel as he takes up the mayorship.

"We never would have gotten this far without you, loyal citizens and sympathizers of the Highlands and the Ariole Republic and opponents of the corrupt Council. But while we have made ourselves known in our city and country, it is now time to take action ourselves," Tojama declared. "I call upon you to throw your support to Mayor-Elect Wendel as he fights for Domardost, for in unified action we can overcome the Council.

"The fight is not yet over!"

Pro-federal demonstrations took place at the same time in the Plaza of the Highlands, which has now hosted events held by all sides of the recent contest for power. Megaphones blared support for "real change and real progress" as well as "united growth".

"Together, we can defeat those standing in the way of unleashed Alpyrean power and a new age of prosperity!" one speaker proclaimed to cheers from the crowd. "We will triumph with action, not election!"

The Federal Council and the national government did not comment on the Domardost elections or the results, and federal garrison troops have still not taken any action against demonstrations or outspoken dissent during the ongoing Emergency. However, as state repression continues elsewhere in the country, the question of whether this is simply government leniency or recognition of the sheer magnitude of dissent in Domardost appears to be easily answered.

HPP's Marcus Wendel declared winner of Domardost Mayoral election; no majority in City Congress
07 June 2019

Note: This is a continuation of coverage on the 2019 Domardost elections.

Marcus Wendel of the Highlander People’s Party (HPP) has won the position of Mayor for the city of Domardost through the 2021 elections, according to official results released Thursday evening.

Wendel won 41.0% of the popular vote in the mayoral contest on Tuesday, a clear plurality over Ariole Democratic Front (ADF) candidate and incumbent Mayor Lisa Fresno who lagged behind with 32.8%. Completely defying expectations and both independent and partisan polls, Wendel has clearly emerged as Tuesday's winner despite anticipated conflict with the Federal Council. In addition, the HPP captured half a dozen seats in the City Congress, setting up Alpyrea's largest city by population for a unique position as the only openly contested government in the Commonwealth.

"Tonight, we celebrate the triumph of our people and our Party," Wendel declared at a public post-election rally at the Plaza of the Highlands. "Tomorrow, we get to work!"

"Domardost has made her voice clear,” Mayor Fresno remarked at a concession speech in front of City Hall. “I wish Mr. Wendel good luck in navigating the difficult course ahead, for our great city and our Commonwealth."

The 2019 election was extremely contested, with Fresno competing with newcomers like Wendel and Alexi Tojama of Free Highlands (FH) who lambasted the Federal Council's actions and policies over the past year, making accusations of corruption and "dictatorial" power. Fresno has been a dissenting voice on the Council, but ultimately supported the Commonwealth system and federal governance; this may have cost her the election, especially with the upstart National Liberal Party which may have siphoned away pro-federal and nationalist votes. Ironically, the introduction of a second candidate supportive of the Council may have secured the place of a blatantly anti-FC mayorship, boosted by the federal ban on FH and a flurry of supporters rushing to an opposition's cause.

The Federal Council has repeatedly attempted to suppress leftist and generally dissenting agitation over the past year, from the events of May Day 2018 to crackdowns on political gatherings and dissent, especially under the pretenses of the still-ongoing National State of Emergency. Despite press restrictions, curfews, and direct cooperation with private entities, however, anti-FC actions and sentiments have been able to break through federal repression. The election of a blatantly anti-FC socialist mayor and a boost to the HPP in the City Congress are only the latest events following this trend; how the Council reacts this time remains to be seen, but since the position of Mayor also comes with a seat on the Federal Council, direct confrontation is more likely than ever.

Note: Exact numbers are still being announced; a final election report and summary will be published once all information is released.

Mass demonstrations on final day before Domardost elections
03 June 2019

Note: This is a continuation of coverage on the 2019 Domardost elections. This coverage will continue until elections are held on Tuesday, the 4th of June.

With less than 24 hours left before polls open, the Highlander People’s Party (HPP) and the banned party of Free Highlands (FH) have held multiple massive rallies in and around Domardost to gather support.

“This is our chance to tell this Commonwealth and the world that we have a voice, and we’re damn well gonna shout with it!” Mayoral candidate Marcus Wendel (HPP) shouted at a demonstration Sunday evening to ecstatic supporters in front of Assembly Hall, where the Federal Council meets.

"Tomorrow, I ask you to get out there and vote, protest, whatever you can for the cause. And whatever you do, let the corrupt Council know that we aren't backing down for our freedom, no matter what," Alexi Tojama told attendees of an FH rally in Liberty Square, where supporters have seemingly set up camp in defiance of a ban on FH activities.

So far no action has been taken against these rallies and demonstrations, despite large gatherings and open opposition to the Federal Council being restricted during the National State of Emergency. While Homeland Defence Force (HDF) troops are deployed and garrisoning every municipality in Alpyrea alongside suspected private security forces, nothing has happened in Domardost, with soldiers simply standing by amid the rallies and demonstrations.

What appears more worrying, however, are the reports from the state-run Federal Register and an alleged surge in numbers for the National Liberal Party (NLP). Founded at the start of the election season, the NLP's pro-federal stance has raised suspicion of collaboration with the Federal Council to secure the seat of current Mayor Fresno (Ariole Democratic Front). While Fresno and the ADF have been compromising between federal and municipal power, Fresno in particular has been seen as a dissident within the Council, especially with the Dawton Daily journalists' situation and her calls for open democracy across Alpyrea. The NLP has drawn support on economic issues and attacked Fresno's record for supporting labour over economy, pointing to the mixed performance of the city during the mid-2010's recession. However, while the ADF maintains a lead in terms of pro-federal supporters, the NLP's performance in polls has been inflated in the Federal Register, and the possibility of electoral fraud or the declaration of the NLP as the winner (in the absence of FH) is a worrying prospect.

Regardless, tomorrow's elections will prove to be interesting for the city's and the country's future as one of the few democratic institutions in Alpyrea acts once more.

Federal Council: Manfurt train hijacking "act of terror" by "left-radicals"
02 June 2019

The Department of Homeland Defence has broken the silence surrounding last Monday's train hijackings in and around western Manfurt, declaring it an "act of terror and violence" committed by "left-radicals".

"5 loaded cargo trains were hijacked in a coordinated act of terror and violence against the Commonwealth," according to a statement released early Sunday morning. "Evidence points to a small extremist group of left-radicals seeking to disrupt commercial and economic operations in this country, and they are considered to be armed and extremely dangerous."

The hijacking took place late Monday night, and according to the state-run Federal Register, the 5 trains were simultaneously seized by armed hijackers who took the controls and sped the locomotives- and their cargo- west on the Trans-Vostina Railway. However, while the trains themselves were eventually found abandoned just 20 km west of Manfurt, attempts by the Homeland Defence Force (HDF) to locate the hijackers failed to find them by air, and a ground search operation is currently ongoing along the railroad's length and around the stopped trains.

"We will find and put an end to this threat," said Maj. Gen. Coro Santiers of the HDF's 1st Division in a televised interview. "The time for subversion and sabotage is over."

Reports did not indicate the nature of the cargo on board, or what motives the hijackers may have had, but at least one train was originally parked at a rail yard for Silverwings Armaments Corporation, Alpyrea's primary weapons manufacturer and one of the largest in the world. The possibility of this group arming themselves, for whatever purposes, may be the reason why there has been such a significant response from the HDF so far, but no group has come forwards or even made themselves public at all. Regardless, there have already been security measures put into place in Manfurt and surrounding communities, and the manhunt is sure to continue for the coming days and even weeks.

Saufhavre Mayor Dwight Alders on diplomatic mission to ICARUS organization
01 June 2019

The Federal Council ended deliberations early for the weekend, with Saufhavre Mayor Dwight Alders leaving Domardost Friday afternoon to serve as the Alpyrean representative to an international summit of the new ICARUS organization. Alders spoke to crowds in his home city before taking off for the second, longer leg of the journey to the global Capital at Saufhavre City International Airport, promising that he would "help secure a prosperous, globally-minded future for Alpyrea."

"Change is coming, for the entire Commonwealth," he declared. "This is the first step into a shared brighter day."

ICARUS, or the Intercontinental Common Association for Resources, Unity, and Solidarity, was founded just over a week ago but already has a dozen member nations, with Alpyrea joining world powers like Danera and SLD. Aimed at pursuing scientific, economic, and cultural progress, ICARUS incorporates the previous International Association of Arts and Sciences (IASA) championed by Danera, and has convened in the Capital for a meeting on the future of the IASA, among other topics. Mayor Alders will be representing the Federal Council and the Commonwealth as he joins several other heads of state and representatives in determining the future of this global organization, including re-elected Daneran President Amer H.W. Monroe, Balkvlan Minister of Foreign Affairs Ellis Burke, and Citizen Zaher from Slotheria. It is hoped that this meeting will outline the constitution and spending allocation for ICARUS, and that this may provide returns for a developing Alpyrea.

Updates on the summit will be provided by this publication and international outlets as information comes in.

Free Highlands banned by Federal Council as Domardost election looms
31 May 2019

Note: This is a continuation of coverage on the 2019 Domardost elections. This coverage will continue until elections are held on Tuesday, the 4th of June.

In a not-so-unexpected turn of events, Free Highlands has been barred from running in the Domardost elections just 4 days out from the start of voting. Justified on a national security basis, the ban was announced Friday morning by the Federal Council’s Department of Internal Affairs which described the movement as “a threat to the Commonwealth.”

“The rhetoric and message that this party has spread constitutes a direct challenge to the existence of Alpyrea, and under this current National State of Emergency such a threat cannot be tolerated,” the announcement read.

Free Highlands is a separatist movement advocating self-rule and even a return to independence for Domardost and the rest of the Ariole Republic’s former territory. Last polling in third place, they were the primary voice of the Sovereign City movement across Alpyrea through Domardost’s free elections, while also containing elements of the more nationalistic and controversial Highlander Nation movement. With FH forecasted to win nearly a quarter of votes in election polls, the ban on Free Highlands may have unforeseen consequences, though the chances of victory for the pro-Federal Council National Liberal Party are almost sure to drop.

Free Highlands Mayoral candidate Alexi Tojama addressed supporters at Liberty Square shortly after the announcement was made, promising not to back down despite the ban.

“Our campaign for freedom and independence continues,” Tojama proclaimed to crowds agitated by the news. “We will fight on, and bring a new era of true prosperity for Domardost and the Highlands!”

Though no actions against Tojama and Free Highlands have been taken yet, the Dept. of Internal Affairs has warned that a “response” will be made if they do not comply with the ban.

“We will not let the Commonwealth be torn apart by unruly factionalism and vitriol,” the announcement concluded.

Port Sakiba People's Council to consider "new options" in public transportation
30 May 2019

A public meeting of Port Sakiba's local People's Council on Wednesday raised the topic of mass transit as city traffic and pollution continue to worsen.

Councilpersons from Verrington, Muhl Creek, and East Palmerstown brought up the issue for consideration, with Muhl Creek Councilperson Andy Xu stating, "We need new options if we are to continue new growth and projects, especially as the citywide smog gets thicker.

"People shouldn't have to deal with congestion and pollution right outside their homes every single day."

Currently the city is served by three subway lines- the Red, Green, and Blue Lines- as well as a commuter rail line extending eastwards past East Sakiba Regional Airport to neighboring municipality Istrich and a rail line extending southwards through Rivera National Park (formerly Rivera Natural Reserve) to New Eltonsdale. However, subways only serve the main island and one station in Verrington, while the two rail lines are old, outdated, and overcrowded, with issues plaguing them since the 1980's. Local bus services also run throughout the city, though they and the express commuter buses that terminate at Harmony Plaza Bus Terminal are often delayed by traffic.

"The outer Districts must be considered in future transit plans," Xu said.

With an increasing population in the outer Districts, including Verrington, University Heights, Rivera, Canal Town, and Muhl Creek, an increasing number of commuters has filled both highways and trains leading into downtown Port Sakiba. This has slowed not only general traffic but also vital city services, while frequent road maintenance is required as traffic growth exceeds original capacity. This has posed a particular problem in older areas of the city, specifically historic places like Benedict Hill or the Old Market area where cobblestone streets bear the stress of an influx of automobiles.

The People's Council is expected to hear from several transport companies, representatives of the Municipal Transportation Office, and the Public Transit Board established in March 2018 to hear out proposals and potential projects. Subway system expansions and a new Verrington light rail are reportedly among the options being offered to address the issue, with the first public meeting being held tomorrow.

Hijacking on the Trans-Vostina Railway: Preliminary Report
28 May 2019

Multiple locomotives carrying heavy freight were "hijacked" around late Monday night, with the trains now steaming westwards on the recently completed Trans-Vostina Railway towards an unknown destination.

According to emergency radio broadcasts picked up offshore, an unknown armed group were somehow able to seize control of several trains in and around of Manfurt, with the first transmission broadcasted around 23:40. At least one train was located in an active yard in the western outskirts of Manfurt, while another was already heading west to Fort Perring. The cargo, number of hijackers, and number of those onboard all remain unknown, especially as these extraordinary events have only just taken place, but updates will be provided as more information becomes available. At the moment, however, federal security forces and even military units are being drawn in, and an investigation to find the group responsible will no doubt be launched soon.

Gulles Airways and Air Crevont alliance announced as economic consolidation continues
27 May 2019

In the latest move of "Second Nationalization", the Federal Council's Department of National Development has brokered an alliance between Gulles Airways and Air Crevont, two large domestic airlines operating around Port Sakiba and Domardost, respectively.

Following last August's Gulles Airways Flight 513 crash at East Sakiba Regional, Gulles Airways has struggled to maintain investor confidence with disappointing quarterly reports through Q1 2019. However, Gulles Airways was and still is the largest air carrier with primary operations in Alpyrea, providing both passenger and freight services around the Basalt Coast with focus on eastern cities like Port Sakiba, Gulles City, and Saufhavre. Air Crevont is much more focused on local flights and chartered services, providing air service around the Highlands and particularly around the former Ariole Republic, its original state of origin. With few conflicting services and complementary capabilities, the two airlines have apparently agreed to an alliance, complete with a codeshare agreement and coordinated services to optimize transfers and scheduling, especially with the small aging fleets they fly.

"We hope to better serve our customers across Alpyrea, and we look forwards to a united and prosperous future," a Gulles Airways statement read.

The Federal Council has attempted to consolidate Alpyrean industry and the economy in the name of national growth and job creation, steaming ahead of its decentralized, fragmented city-state past into a corporatist future. Near-monopolies already exist particularly in the cases of the Silverwings Armaments Corporation and International Vista Produce Corporation, two of Alpyrea's largest entities that almost single-handedly control military industry and agricultural production in the country. However, this centralization of power is also empowering these private groups, and whether they will actually bring the economic benefits promised is doubtful, considering continued deterioration of conditions for ordinary Alpyrean citizens. This airline alliance may only further empower the private sector, which does somewhat rely on air freight, and accelerate national consolidation.

Candidates join Domardost elections despite FC restrictions
25 May 2019

Note: This is a continuation of coverage on the 2019 Domardost elections. This coverage will continue until elections are held on Tuesday, the 4th of June.

Campaigning is in full swing for the 75 seats of the Domardost City Congress and the coveted office of Mayor, which brings with it a seat on the Federal Council. With 10 days to go, the Highlander People's Party (HPP) and Free Highlands (FH) have stepped up organizing against the current Mayor, Lisa Fresno, who is running for re-election with the Ariole Democratic Front (ADF). The HPP candidate for Mayor, Marcus Wendel, has been particularly brazen, gathering rallies around the city despite current restrictions on public gatherings and communications under the Federal Council.

"We will not quiet down, and we will not back down!" Wendel declared in front of thousands of cheering supporters at the Plaza of the Highlands Friday night.

Crusading for "workers' democracy" across Alpyrea, the HPP will almost certainly fail in its stated aims if they win the Mayor's office, considering how much of Alpyrea rests in autocrats' hands. However, a win would be incredibly symbolic, serving as an indicator of public dissent and unrest, and it could perhaps incite further unrest across Alpyrea. Since the National State of Emergency was declared in October, open strikes, demonstrations, and gatherings have been suppressed, and the highly influential Workers' Progressive Socialist Front in particular has been silenced. Victory for the HPP- an event that seems increasingly likely- would rebuke the "Second Nationalization" underway by the FC and send a message that the socialist movement continues to live in spite of nationalist capitalism and corporatism.

Similarly, FH's campaign with Mayoral candidate Alexi Tojama is hitting back against the Council, though on the issue of centralized rule rather than anti-labour and suppression of civil liberties. Seeking a return to the days of an independent Ariole Republic, Free Highlands is appealing to those who see corruption enriching those in power, magnified to a regionwide scale across a Nationalized Basalt Coast. Straddling the lines of left and right, a broad movement against Nationalization and the Federal Council is steadily gaining momentum if polls are accurate, and the FH is catching up to its opponents with it.

Fresno and the ADF are still holding strong, though, with an established and respected reputation for maintaining Domardost's independence in the face of external pressure. Since elected and re-elected in 2015 and 2017, Fresno has implemented labour-friendly policies while guiding Domardost through a regional economic recession. While other cities in the Basalt Coast and the Highlands have struggled, Domardost has actually managed to grow and modernize to a small extent, and currently boasts the Commonwealth's most advanced computer and education systems. However, the ADF is slowly losing its edge as frustration with rule by the Council continues, and as Fresno is a member of that Council, her established status could also be a detriment to her campaign. Supporters often reference her record in the Council, however, most notably her calls for a transition to democratic government with the Federal Constitutional Convention and for a public trial of the detained Dawton Daily journalists. Both of these ended in failure, though, which could further taint her re-election bid.

Last, but apparently not least of all, is the National Liberal Party (NLP), a new organization pushing for further federal ties to integrate the Commonwealth's economy and its national power. With polls indicating strong growth in the past days, the NLP seems to be drawing from the pro-Nationalization segment of the ADF's voting bloc, promising direct federal action instead of the municipal-federal balance that Fresno has fought for. With the current recession straining Domardost, people searching for an alternative to Fresno may find comfort in the NLP; however, its sudden appearance and widespread campaigning have led to speculation that the NLP is merely a front for those in the Federal Council seeking to oust Fresno. The party's positions on free-market capitalism and support for the ongoing "Second Nationalization" by the Council only lend further credence to this, though in the end it will be the voters of Domardost who (hopefully) determine their leaders and their future.

Polls as taken by the Ariole Republican Policy Institute, a non-partisan political research center:
Lisa Fresno (ADF): 37% (-6)
Marcus Wendel (HPP): 30% (0)
Alexi Tojama (FH): 19% (+4)
Varesh Patel-Carter (NLP): 11% (New, +11)
Other/Undecided: 3% (-9)
Poll taken 24 May 2019 with margin of error +/-2%

Alpyrea joins new ICARUS and RIO organizations, seeking greater foreign involvement
24 May 2019

Domardost to hold June elections amid National State of Emergency: Special Report
23 May 2019

Despite military garrisons, national curfews, and an ongoing National State of Emergency, Alpyrea will soon witness its first post-Nationalization elections. In a rare public speech, Domardost Mayor Lisa Fresno announced that the 2019 elections for the republic-turned-municipality would "continue as planned".

"In the midst of new crises for our new systems, our proud old republican tradition will go on," Fresno said at Liberty Square in Domardost's Historical District Monday afternoon.

The Republic of Ariole was incorporated into the Commonwealth as one of its largest municipalities in April 2018, large enough to be broken into three- Domardost, the old Republic's capital; Bel Arios, the primary port city of the Western Highlands region; and Dunmouth, where the Ariole River meets the Juventine Sea. Unlike the other small states that also Nationalized, Domardost was not and still is not a monarchy or personal dictatorship, with democratic elections held every two years. This year's election will see the office of Mayor- and its attached office of member of the Federal Council- as well as all 75 seats of the City Congress up for grabs. The Federal Council seat is of significant importance this election; Fresno is a unique figure in a body leading Alpyrea by executive decree, as one of just three elected mayors in the 26-seat Council, and the outcome of the election will serve as a strong indicator of the public's opinion of both her policies and those of the current government as the NSoE continues.

"Together, as a unified nation, Alpyrea will emerge triumphant with the power of our Domardost and all her sister cities," Fresno declared in her address. "We will overcome our current obstacles and forge a new future- over fire and foes!"

Fresno, de facto leader of the Ariole Democratic Front (ADF), will have to overcome opponents from the left-wing Highlander People's Party (HPP) and the "Free Highlands" (FH) coalition, which supports the Sovereign City movement in its push for a return to self-rule. Though the two groups have yet to publicly put forwards candidates for Mayor, Fresno's re-election bid will face a new challenge from a new, rapidly growing party, the National Liberal Party (NLP). Contrasting from the ADF's support for the current system of shared municipal-federal powers, the HPP's broad platform for workers' democracy, and the FH's strong push for independence altogether, the NLP has declared a pro-federal position. They have already campaigned heavily through posters and leaflets, supporting stronger national ties and a free-market economy to promote economic and job growth, benefiting Alpyrea as a whole. Strongly suspected as being a front for the Federal Council and more conservative elements, it may struggle to find traction in a particularly anti-federal city, especially with Highlander or Ariole separatist sentiments added on top of existing Sovereign City popularity.

Elections will be held on Tuesday, the 4th of June, giving candidates just over two weeks' time to campaign in the midst of Alpyrea's current crises. Though restrictions on the press, communication platforms, and gatherings remain in place, Domardost may be the one hope for open democracy and popular expression in the Commonwealth for the foreseeable future.

Updates on the election, as well as information on the parties and mayoral candidates, will be posted as events develop. Though information remains limited and restricted, the state-run Federal Register seems to be reporting the democratic process relatively accurately, and news will be sourced from there as needed.

Fourth container ship disappears in Ratateague Sea; no comment from Alpyrean government, corporations
17 April 2019

A fourth container ship has apparently disappeared in the waters between northern Romaxia and the southern coast of Iskar, according to several relatives of sailors who reached out to this publication earlier this week.

The Veronica was sailing from Port Sakiba's International Seaport to Lerencia, SLD on the Sea of Jotunland in central Frimunira, departing on 08 April, but the ship never arrived at an intermediate stop at Saufhavre to pick up more goods. Based on claims from the families of sailors onboard this ship and three before it- the Oryol, the Fortuna, and the Edith May- these ships seem to have simply "vanished".

"It's just been absolute silence," said Aliya Das, mother of Shahil Das who was last seen in Saufhavre on the Oryol on 23 March. "We haven't heard a word since."

All four ships were carrying assorted goods between the Basalt Coast and ports like Lerencia or the Capital, and all four went missing in the western Ratateague Sea just a few days into their journeys. There was never any announcement made of their disappearances, with no word from the government nor the companies who either produced or carried the goods onboard. These potentially related cases only came to light with the efforts of crew members' dedicated families and "a hefty bit of luck", according to organizer Marion Romario.

"We found each other with our own stories, our own tragedies, and from them we've tried to figure out what exactly happened out there," Romario said in an interview on Monday.

A network of families managed to connect across borders and seas, as relatives or others close to those missing reached out to one another, even in a repressive Alpyrea that has restricted online communications. Romario herself managed to orchestrate several meet-ups and online groups, all with the aim of collecting information for investigation as well as public release through channels such as this publication. Romario's long-term partner was onboard the Oryol, the first ship to go missing, and since then she has devoted herself to finding answers for the dozens of families waiting for answers as well.

"So far we've narrowed down an area from publicly accessible data from buoys and stuff, but there's only so much we can really do," Romario shared. "What's saddening to me is that despite how we've all found each other in uncertainty and grief, there are still dozens who were onboard those ships without family, who were on their own in this world and trying to find a way out.

"The fact that we've still managed to find each other with such hope and determination is comforting, all things considered."

"I might never hear from my Shahil again," Das said while staring out the interview room's window, "but if we can at least get some answers, we might at least find some peace."

Updates will be posted as more information comes in.
