Fascinating choice. Sehkmet, one of our oldest citizens and always one to promote the theme and culture of our region would indeed be a good choice. This, as a friendly reminder is how the law reads regarding this guild after the historic Zartavarian revisions:

§4.5. Oracles Guild
The Oracles Guild shall be responsible for the protection and enforcement of the 13 Abydos Axioms over the region. The guild shall be lead by a High Oracle, who is, only upon vacancy of office, appointed for life by the currently seated Grand Luxarch from among the currently seated oracles. If there exists no oracles to choose from, the Grand Luxarch may choose any citizen. Additionally, the Oracles Guild allows for up to three Oracles chosen by and to serve under the High Oracle, and from among a host of Apprentice Oracles who study within the guild. The Oracles Guild is also charged with promoting the history, education, and culture of Abydos to the citizens.

Secondarily, the entire interpretation process changed in your absence, Requiemis. Before the Oracles Guild was a wild wild west-esque system when Zyris (myself) and others ran the guild. That system lead to a lot of animosity and confusion. After hours of discussion and back and forth with Grand Luxarch Zartavaria, we settled on a clearer and more precise system for you all in the guild to work with. It reads as follows:

§3.1. Interpretations of Law
We shall grant the right of interpretation of law to the Oracles Guild. The Oracles Guild shall interpret this Eye of Abydos and all subsequent law. The Oracles Guild shall write a Law Review on their interpretation of the law to be accepted by all citizens of Abydos. An interpretation of law shall be final upon the agreement of all Oracles present and the agreement and signature of the High Oracle; otherwise, no interpretation shall be recognized. At this time, unfortunately a Scribe can not serve as any other position. That is in section 8.3. I am willing to entertain the idea of establishing a Writ of Revision on that and either clarifying that restriction or abolishing it outright. It was put in there to prevent a Scribe from being a High Priest or Grand Luxarch simultaneously, which would definately not he good. It could be worded a lot better.

Amenhotep and Qon

Good Morning Abydos!

I hope you all are enjoying the start to your Memorial Day Weekend for those US citizens, and enjoying your Saturday for those who aren't. It is Election Day here in Abydos City and we all know what that means - by the end of the day we will have ourselves a new High Priest. Mote importantly, we will be one step closer to a fully functioning government.

Before I sign off here to mow my grass (a daunting all day task usually followed up by beer and bonfires I wanted to touch base with you all on some minute details which should begin to be thought about.

The Citizens Guild
Having for ourselves a Qualified and ambitious Elder Statesman is key to our ability to thrive. They run the guild and organize its contents. Our citizens, old and new should be privy to current and up to date information as to where the political parties are at, who is in charge of what guilds and foster a strong sense of welcoming and respect for the region.

The goal is simple: take a brand new nation, and turn them into a citizen eager to make their mark on our great place. Everyone here bless welcomed and given an opportunity to rise up. Many of you still have those opportunities. The gift of opportunity should be extended to the new generation of Abydos citizens as well.

There are only a small handful of instances in this region where change and fear of the new nations has dampened the spirits of those people. Let us not fall into that trap that so many regions do. We are a region that is open for business to all. While it is almost natural for an "old guard" of experienced players to form and to attempt to lock out the new, this urge should be avoided. It is a damaging instinct.

Furthermore, what is equally damaging to the region is to purposefully use new nations to rebell against the system we have in place. Challenging a player in an election is okay. Challenging the Eye of Abydos or calling for the overthrow of the entire region is certainly not. The difference between them is evident in the results produced. One spawns a dynamic and ever evolving region where diverse personalities take turns in shaping our home. The other leads to resentment and strife. A fair and consistent Elder Statesman can make all the difference on this front. Equally, those of us in leadership positions should also take these deals into consideration during this rebuilding process.

The Oracles Guild
It occurred to me, Requiemis that your Guild can equally help in this endeavor. I am excited to see your interpretation of our culture and how you seek to promote it. Your unique advantage is you lived through the Grand Luxarch Ancient Greek Kingdoms Golden Age. You witnessed the height of what politics can be, both beautiful like a chest game and tense and ugly as partisanship takes root. You have also seen the region both internally, and seen it operate from the outside.

The internal spirit of Abydos is one thing. How we are viewed is another. As the citizens and guilds go out Into the world, our culture should naturally spread with it. Either through the Defense Guild or the Ambassadors.

At the moment though, you have a blank slate upon which to build, but you also have an ever increasing array of historic precident upon which to use. It is in that history that you now have some advantage. I'll explain:

Before, Abydos had no history. We basically were building the region on dreams and Hope's of what it could be. What we built is a machine that we all had to adjust to, and still never fully operated. These days, we have had our Eye for over half a year. Completely devoid of emotion, the Eye lingers over us and equally as we seek to guide the region in our will, it also guides us in its. It is a symbiotic relationship that either people can handle, or they cannot.

Addressing once and for all the departures of February isnt something we should hide or cover up, it is now part of the legacy that we built. Like a clash of ideas, we can look at that event in two ways. We could see it as an utter failure of the Eye, and of the leadership styles at the time, or we could recognize that part of a dynamic system is facing a crisis we do not like or enjoy. Personally, I view it more positively in that we survived. We overcame. When most regions have their government decapitated they collapse. We have only to look to our former ally Aukumnia to see that a singular wrong move collapsed their entire system. Their region is destroyed. The brilliance of the Eye of Abydos is that even when the worst happens, we have the means at which to rebound. For us, it took a long time. It took players like Zartavaria, and Eviena, and Illuminatiea, and German federal reich and others to keep with the system, slowly making moves to allow the system to correct itself. Honestly, their determination and resilience is deeply admirable.

In short, the cultural and historic identity of Abydos is in the hands of our Oracles Guild. Let us celebrate our tragedies and triumphs and teach this to a new generation of players.

The Defense Guild
Sadly, it is not all pie in the sky. My initiative to establish a functioning Defense Guild has not yet produced the results I had initially wanted. I've said before that the region tends to tilt in one direction or the other like a plate being balanced with many sides representing the Guilds. That is okay, but for me that is not enough.

Over this weekend, I will be reaching out to various defender organizations and begin establishing ties with them. Once the citizenry here establishes itself an Ambassadors Guild, we can make those ties official. In the mean time, I will he looking specifically for a region that will allow us to jump with them on missions, and save the world from the tyrannical raiders who thrive in region destruction. Region destruction is fun if you are a raider, but not so much fun if you are on the receiving end. I know first hand, I've been in both positions.

What all this means for you is that any nation, seeking to learn how to defend, now is definately your opportunity to learn a new NS skill and make a difference in the world.

Since former Grand Luxarch Zartavaria took it upon himself to make some insignia and such for our Defense Guild, I would like to request one more flag be created: a Battle Flag, to be used by our nations while serving along side other defenders in foreign lands. This singular gesture builds unity here and abroad. It shows that we stand United and that our forces can make a difference as well. We have historically struggled with the Defense Guild ... that struggle ends soon.

In Closing

In closing, Dear Citizens. I am very pleased that so many of you are rising to the challenge and continuing to offer your time and commitment into the rebuilding of Abydos thelat Zartavaria has started. Our recruitment drive is still going on, and the region seems to be headed in a positive direction. Our choices and our results from here on will shape the future of Abydos in a new way. I am glad to have all of you a part of this effort.

Union Break.

I wanted to take a moment to address a subject that came up recently, and has, in fact came up several times in our past, that of Scribes holding dual positions. Let us discuss.

I could simply make the change to the Eye of Abydos however I want to with zero input from anybody given my own current dual role, but honestly, that is neither fun, fair, or does anything to help advance our cause. Indeed, that is more of a dictatorial approach, and one image, I dont necessarily want to foster on my third day on the job. So, I have a better idea. After the Electuon, I'd like to engage all of you in a poll to see if indeed the conscious population here even wants this. If that passes by majority and if High Oracle Requiemis and the incoming High Priest agree, then I will make the change.

Currently the Section in question reads as follows:

§8.3. Scribe Restrictions
No scribe shall hold any other office in Abydos. Scribes shall be regarded as equal to one another, each holding the same rights and responsibilities to propose law and call for votes. The Conclave shall make no law which designates additional responsibilities to the scribes in an imbalanced way, nor create secondary offices for itself.

This is my proposed change:

§8.3. Scribe Restrictions
No Scribe shall simultaneously hold the office of High Oracle, Oracle, High Priest or Grand Luxarch and nations in these offices shall not appoint or select themselves to be Scribes as a means at which to switch positions in government. Scribes shall be regarded as equal to one another, each holding the same rights and responsibilities to propose law, sponsor laws that citizens have drafted, and call for votes. The Conclave shall make no law which designates additional responsibilities to the scribes in an imbalanced way, nor create secondary offices for itself.

Summary
The modifications to this section do three things.

1. Clarification of which positions a Scribe should not simultaneously hold, while opening the door for Scribes to simultaneously hold positions largely pertaining to guilds. This also prevents conflicts of interest with legal interpretations.

2.. Prevents a potential circumvention of the Eye in the election-selection-appointment process disallowing the selection or appointment of ones own self.

3. Ends the debate on whether a citizen can write legislation, and introduces the idea that legislation can be drafted by anybody, but must be sponsored and introduced to the Conclave by a Scribe.

Thoughts?
