Backstory:
The first few years of Norwegian independence were a great time for the country, economically, socially and culturally with having retained Iceland and the Faroes from Denmark unlike real life. With Norway now having fully thrown off the Swedish yoke, the country was free to pursue its own foreign policy objectives and economic plans. The independent Norwegian Government made sweeping reforms by way of extending the rights of workers and women's suffrage, environmental protection, sick pay and much more. In 1911 Roald Amundsen and his crew became the first humans to reach the South Pole after surviving the extremely harsh conditions of the Antarctic. During WW1, Norway remained officially neutral, however due to it's extensive financial and military support of Britain, it was termed by British diplomats as the "Neutral Ally". During the 1930s the Depression hit Norway hard and many became unemployed and were landed in severe poverty. The Depression caused many Norwegian companies to go bankrupt and overall weakened the country to levels not seen for hundreds of years. The hardship of the 1930s are said to be one of the reasons Norway was largely unprepared for the German attack in WW2. In 1940 German forces invaded and occupied Norway and Vidkun Quisling of the Nasjonal Samling (EN: "National Gathering") party was made puppet leader of the country by the Nazis. Norway fought viciously against German occupation and numerous Norwegian cities were bombed and scorched to the ground. King Haakon VII refused to acquiesce to German demands and fled to London along with the legitimate Norwegian Government. Resistance cells against the Nazis were common throughout the country and it never surrendered. Due to the war and its horrific affects on the country, Anti-Nazism became a core part of Norwegian national identity and that idea still persists to this day. During 1944-1945 the country was eventually liberated by a combination of Free Norwegian forces, Soviets and Brits. Germany surrendered on the 8th of May. In the aftermath of the war, up to 30,000 Norwegians were tried for treason, and although not all of them received prison sentences, many people who had collaborated with the Germans were often socially ostracised and shunned in the years following the war. Vidkun Quisling and his illegal government were sentenced to death at Akershus Fortress in Oslo on charges of treason. "Quisling" has since become a word synonymous with traitor or collaborator in the English and Scandinavian languages. Much of Norwegian history has remained the same other than siginificantly reduced immigration due to Norway remaining more conservative and inward looking than in real life. It also has not joined NATO in this timeline.
