Two times zones an hour apart was inconvenient.
But an 1/2 apart was more convenient. :P
In Assam, tea gardens follow a separate time zone known as the 'Tea Garden Time' or Bagantime that is one hour ahead of IST
*Convenience* is a relative thing. India bases it's time zone on a half hour basis because back when it was an English Colony, people could easily tell what time it was back in England by simply turning their watch upside down. So, for example, if your watch in India says 8:20, turn it upside down, and it will appear to read 10 minutes to 3.

In the late middle ages and early Renaissance, power struggles were very common ... and so was poisoning your competition. So the technique/habit arose of clinking glasses before drinking ones drink to spill a little bit off the top from your glass into his to insure your rival hadn't poisoned the drink.
