I'm wondering if I should stay in Lazarus or go exploring the regions.
Gunhumper? Prosthetic devices? Made up statistics? You crack me up.
But here's a question for you. If you find yourself confined in a theater, restaurant, or other place and someone goes on a shooting rampage, would you prefer to be armed, possibly save your own life and maybe even the lives of others? Or would rather just die like the rest?
I'd be willing to help you try.
Chrobatia, don't try to argue with 'murican republicans. Most republicans live in alternate realities.
I don't understand American politics, everyone just screams at one another that they're mentally disabled due to their beliefs and then claim that they're the most tolerant nation in the world

There's an excellent book called "The Believing Brain", by Michael Shermer, that looks at that particular phenomena (amongst many others). Conservatives and liberals, republicans and democrats, right and left, all (mostly) believe that their own views are derived from reason, while the views of people they disagree with are derived from emotion. The notion that it is possible for well meaning, decent people to have different points of view on various matters is confounding to nearly everyone. Thus, if they disagree with you on a major issue, the first explanation people come up with is that their oppontent must be either stupid, crazy, or evil. It's a pretty depressing aspect of life in general, one that I struggle with myself.

Seems more likely that the good guy with the gun in this scenario will either end up hurting more people in the crossfire, or will take long enough trying to make sure they have a safe shot that the bad guy would end up shooting them first because the bad guy doesn't care who gets hurt
Hello!
It's been a while since i last visited NationStates, it's good to be back and endorse everyone in Lazarus too!

We're glad to have you!
Done. It seems fine. I'm sure our delegate will get to it soon: he was on earlier today. Maybe you'll know by tomorrow! (No promises :))

Not so far. In the potential mass shootings where someone armed has confronted the shooter, the average death toll is 2.5. In a mass shooting where the police have to be called to stop the shooting, the average body count is 12.[1]
But now you get the same question. If by some horrible quirk of fate, you find yourself trapped in an area with an active shooter, would you prefer to face that shooter armed with harsh words or something that will stop the threat to yourself or others?

I'll never really know the answer to that question without the firsthand experience. I've always wondered what target shooting would be like, but I don't think I would ever go around carrying a gun. As for the "armed with harsh words" part, I doubt I'd confront a probably crazed gunman in that manner- my naive hope would be that I can use the surroundings to my advantage in such a situation, but again, you can't really know how that's going to play out.

Target shooting can be great fun; you should try it. Sporting clays with a shotgun; paper targets with a BB gun, or a .177 rifle, or a .22; hell, plinking at water filled pop bottles: all are good ways to introduce yourself to sporting firearms, and they aren't very expensive either.
Tasty, but still has too much Marx extract in it for my liking. :)
I would prefer some Voltaire extract on that, it's less agressive.
