Ugh this is the deep waters of conservative politics, which I'm not very aware of, but I'll just say what I think and see if I get corrected. To be honest, I just think it's a stereotype now associated with nationalists at this point. There was a point where it had real foundations in the nationalistic ideals, but, to my understanding, it's just faded into stereotype. Of course there are many nationalists that hold some anti-immigration ideals, but I think they are completely blown out of proportion by some rather loud and ignorant voices. I also think in the media, they try and take advantage of this stereotype. Ever since the fall of the Fascist regimes in the 1940s, I think any mention of extremely right leaning policies gained a taboo of its own and sort of any mention of it would slightly terrify people, and therefore more people would read it.

I also think with globalisation in full swing, the media targets people who seem to disagree with it. At this point I would like to mention I'm rather liberal, but I still feel that the media is targeting the right, which is leading to the large political divides we are seeing today. I think the reason nationalists and patriots are seen as xenophobic and anti-immigrant is because the media is cherry picking horrible examples to try and sell more. Happy to talk to anyone who disagrees with my opinion, would love to hear what someone from the other side has to say.
