If you are going to go the extraterrestrial route, it would be a good idea to establish when you're people took to space, developed FTL, made contact with humanity and similarly important events.

Maybe I could help? Normally when I'm coming up with a new species, to iron out their appearance I ask myself a few questions.

Is their planet similar to Earth or different and how so? What was their original habitat like? Are they fish-like, amphibian, arthropodic, reptilian, avian or mammalian? Do they spend most of their time in the water, canopy, underground or on the ground? Are they omnivorous, carnivorous, herbivorous, insectivorous, fungivorous or photosynthetic and/or chemosynthetic? Are they bipedal? If so, do they have a tail? If so, is it vestigial? If they are not bipedal, how many limbs do they walk on?

These questions should at least provide some idea as to appearance.

Reptilian and mammalian both have pros and cons. Reptiles main weakness is a need for their environment to allow homeostasis. Mammals on the other hand suffer a much higher metabolism.

Basically, reptiles would need environmental suits and lots of terraforming to colonize other worlds whereas mammals would suffer shorter lifetimes and need more resources to survive.

There are no decent pictures of humanoid aliens. I've looking for so long. I think I might just have to settle on something.
