Native Filopinian Given Names

Historically, Native Filopinian children were given a name of usually one or two syllables. Once they reached a certain stage of maturity, a suffix was added to their names.

Example situation: At birth, a boy was named Sal. Once Sal reached a level of maturity, he was renamed Salpait. After reaching another level of maturity, he was renamed Salraq.

Men usually received the suffixes: -laq, -pait, -aq, -eq, -tin -raq, or -uq

Women usually received the suffixes: -na, -ne, -ka, -re, or -le

The final two for the men and the last one for the women were usually reserved for elders.

Since then, the custom has almost disappeared completely. Most people given a Native Filopinian name are usually born with the suffix. Native Filopinian names are currently rising in popularity.
