Transylvania, the powerhouse of Romania

Majestic castles, beautiful cities, marvelous sites; if you have seen one of these associated with Romania, chances are the pictures were taken in Transylvania. With multiculturalism enshrined in the region, Transylvania was home to not only two, but three ethic groups: the Romanians, the Szekelys, and the Transylvanian Saxons, all of them having had a high influence on the traditions and architecture of the area. While the latter group has shrunk significantly since the end of the 19th century, from around 12% to approximately 0.5% today, its culture can still be heavily seen today in cities such as Sibiu or Brașov. The Szekelys, however, are still present in the region, creating one of the most interesting and diverse areas in Transylvania: the Szekely Land.

What made Transylvania so different from the other two regions is the Carpathian Mountains, which offered a shield against the eastern and southern invaders, making the region more tied to the western culture and traditions. This brought stability to these lands, a comfort that the other two Romanian regions lacked throughout the years.

The prodigal son has returned?

While many will not believe this, there are reports that The Romanian Bulletin, a weekly newspaper brought to the public some 50 days ago, is preparing to launch its first ever issue tomorrow. With such claims out, conspiracy theorists were quick to propose the idea that this in fact part of a secret governmental plan to revitalize the region. Whether you believe them or not, there is no denial that the widespread anticipation build around will make it a best seller!
