Calendar and timekeeping

Timekeeping on Minaere offers unique challenges. On Rireinu the units of time have been derived from the observed rhythms of the heavens. The surface of Usa is inhospitable to life in any case, so why not ignore the surface and local time altogether? And so the settlers of Usamivi brought the clock and calendar of Rireinu with them to their underground cities. But Minaere is almost as hospitable as Rireinu itself. A solution had to be found that can fit together local days and years with familiar units of time.

One revolution of Minaere is 10ru98 (24h 36min) long.

One orbit of Minaere is 490.43 local days or 538.60pa. or 1.6255 Rireinu years (503 Galactic Standard Days) long.

Calendar

As on Rireinu, the year begins on winter solstice and the day begins at sunset. The calendar year (minayeni) has 491 days (ano) divided into 16 months (mina) of 30 or 31 days each. The days are 11ru00 long each, except the 31st day of a month (kukoano) is only 10ru00.

As in the Rireinu calendar, months have numbers for names.

The last month of the year is of variable length. Two years out of every seven, the 16th month has only 30 days. Such years are called pisiyeni or short years. Minayeni whose number is divisible by seven are pisiyeni, followed by three full-length minayeni. The fourth year is again pisiyeni, followed by two full-length minayeni.

Minaere calendar also has the seven-day week, copied from Rireinu. The names are almost the same, except the fifth day of the week, named after Minaere in the Rireinu calendar, is named after Rireinu instead: anoano, usaano, amiano, reiano, rireano, makoano, hotaano. Anoano is a day of rest, or at least time and a half.

Minaere Date Line

The Minaere Date Line coincides with the 200ko. meridian, which runs down the middle of Big Ocean, with no habitable land masses nearby. Minaere is divided into 20 time zones, just like Rireinu, with 0ru50 difference between adjacent zones. However, since the Minaere day is actually 11ru00 long rather than 10ru00, it could be said that there are two time zones missing. Thus, the time difference between the Pa (180-200ko.W) and Ro (180-200ko.E) zones is 1ru50.
