Record low temperatures prompt government response - January 13th, 2020 (Deutsche Zeitung)

As the flurry of celebration and joy of the new decade has washed over the German people and those around the world, the cold winds from the north have begun to rapture the climate. Hospitals in Berlin, Hamburg, Munich, and Wien have reported around 20 cases of hypothermia over the course of January alone, 9 of those resulting in amputation of limbs, and 2 cases of young children having passed away as paramedics arrived. The cause? Extremely low temperatures from winter winds blowing from the North Sea, Northern Taralus, and the Southern region of Komminland have gripped the environment for some time now, and those having caught hypothermia were not equipped with nothing more then a beanie and small coat.

As a response, the government has decided to begin a "coat drive" where anyone can donate excess winter clothing, whether that be clothes that no longer fit, or newly bought hats and other apparel for the purpose of donating. The aim is to provide those unable to afford excess winter clothing-- or those too stubborn to do so; will as the German government hopes, begin to bundle up while outside for a lengthy portion of time. Those who are curious as to where you can pick up the donated winter clothes can go to a local government building where a stall with a vendor will be ready to provide to those in need.

Decision '20: results
Following a tense night of coverage by all major news channels and one of the hardest fought campaigns, the world's largest electorate turned out from Srilánair to Seláhirn on a turnout of around 92% to not only decide who should govern the nation for the next 5 years but to also set a record for not only the highest turnout in Karthspiri history but the largest election in world history. Not only was this the largest count in our nation's history but the use of new digital counting systems assisted electoral officers and volunteers in counting the votes; making it one of the fastest with the last result coming in only 13 hours after the polls closed.

Analysts noted that, whilst high across the board by international standards, turnout was noticeably high in the northern strongholds of the National Front with many stations having to remain open after the 10pm deadline to allow those still in-line the time to vote. With issues from regional development to international stability having taken centre stage, the parties did indeed have quite a lot to fight about.

Results: Seats
This election, in terms of seats, is truly a historic one. For the first time in a Karthspiri election, one political party is able to form a Government with a working majority without support from any other party either through an informal agreement or coalition. In the 1000 seat Legislature the seats were awarded as follows:
Balth Nasjonal (National Front): 530
Aranárr'Nurhethi (Conservative Party): 68
Aranárr'Shalathi (Liberal Party): 31
Nyril Demokratii (New Democrats): 39
Sangrá'Váljuritti (Labour Party): 157
Andolrárr'vorossi (Red Movement): 41
Sár Karthspirije Verthraii Blok (All Karthspire Forward Bloc): 134

With the National Front able to form a Government by itself, their leader Kristina Larathael, visibly ecstatic at the result at her count last night, is expected to visit Her Majesty to form a Nationalist Majority Government with herself at its head.

Amendment Proposal 3 Fails
After a shocking turn of events in last week's referendum, a whooping 72% of Nuakians voted in favor of keeping slavery in the law books inherited by the United Kingdom after a peaceful transition of power between the Tranquil Republic and the United Kingdom of Nuak. This is seen as a social shift in Nuak, as so called "Slave Training" and "Master School" has spiked online after many celebrities have been noticed with new slaves who willingly volunteered to work for them. The defeat is also a major blow to the Regino, as getting rid of slavery has been a key issue he's been vocal about for years.

New Budget published
Following the Nationalist victory in the election, the budget promises of the National Front have begun to be enacted in full. Although the budget is, as usual, quite a long document filled with everything from taxes levied on daily products such as bread to the newly set up small business fund. Perhaps the big winner of this budget is the Ministry of War with the pre-election promises of PM Larathael relating to military expansion seemingly having been fulfilled with military spending being raised from 3% of GDP to 3.5%. In addition to this, the Government has sanctioned the creation of a Karthspiri Space Agency to be assigned under the new Department for Intergalactic Affairs which is to receive joint oversight from the Ministries of War and Exterior. Whilst the primary purpose of this new Space Agency will be science and civilian related, it will undoubtedly be leveraged to give the Empire a military advantage over its rivals.

Flooding Near The Canal. Rescue Crews Turned Back

The Rainy season has caused flooding in many parts of the country. The Panama Canal Zone near the Pacific Lock overflowed and did significant damage to an outpost. It was reported that people were injured and some died. Ambulances and Coast Guard troops attempted to enter the zone but, were harassed by ATCO troops. One ATCO soldier attempted to board an ambulance but, was pulled away despite his injuries. All resuce crews have stated they refuse to enter unless they be free from harassment from stationed troops.

The Anarhapulco Conference ended with fireworks and celebrations yesterday. Many projects were introduced including:

2. Free Schools by The Rothbard Foundation
3. Hemp As A Construction Material by Greenway
4. Cannabis As Medicine by Juarez Pharmaceutical Company
5. Privatized Welfare by St. John Foundation

Many of these ideas were put into a petition to be submitted to the Federal Council. Some foreign speakers did express fear of crossing back as they fear their government retaliation. One spraker from The Philadelphia Free Thinkers said
"I have no regrets about being a part of this conference. I do fear that my government will harass me for merely speaking about freedom. More than likely their cops will find a way to have me arrested for bogus charges. I will stand my ground if they shoot at me"

A woman from Nieuw Zealandia expressed her concerns about reentering her country

There is bias news. We all do it and that's fair. And then there is controlling other player's property(troops, specific person, etc.) to support the narrative that you want to set. This is the second time he's done it. First he reported out of the blue that ATCO had withdrawn, when that was never the case.

Again, I have little issue with Nord reporting that my guys did some mean-spirited stuff. But he has to ask first. Just like I wouldn't just come out of nowhere and say that "Confederate border guards were caught moving our border indicators" without actually reaching out to Nord about it first. It's just common courtesy in NS RP.

Centrists to Support National?

With the general election coming up this October, rumours have begun spreading that the Centrist Party is going to support National. Whilst this has not yet been confirmed, many believe it to be true as the Centrists and National agreed on many things, including doctor-assisted suicide and increasing military funding.

Meanwhile, Liberal has been losing approval ratings, dropping to 14% in yesterday's Colmar Brunton Poll.

Dietsland Times

The Dutch government announced to finish the construction of the Markerwaard polder. The construction of Markerwaard would have resulted in the near-total reclamation of the Markermeer. Cornelis Lely's plan projected a polder in the south-west of the Zuiderzee, originally named Hoornsche Polder, referring to Hoorn, then simply "Southwest Polder". Later the name was changed to Markerwaard Polder, after the island of Marken. However, reclamation of three other polders took place first, and preparations for the Markerwaard were being made while draining of the northeast and southeast polders (today's Flevoland) were underway.

In 1941 work for this project started; about 2 km of a dike north of Marken was built. It would have had an area of nearly 600 km2. Later, it was decided that the Flevopolder should have priority. In 1957, the island of Marken was connected to mainland Holland. In 1976 the dam Houtribdijk connecting Enkhuizen and Lelystad was completed, a necessary step in the construction of Markerwaard, the dikes for the bordering lakes were still to be completed. However the entire project became mired in political and environmental controversy. In the late 1970s, the project was revised down leaving wide bordering lakes between the polder and North Holland. Marken would remain a peninsula, unlike on the original project. At this stage, the Markerwaard would have had an area of 410 km2.

As of 1961 Markerwaard was expected to be finished in 1978. In 1998 the plan was revived and the debate on a final decision regarding it took over twenty years. The questions concerned the need, on one side, for more agricultural areas, new residential subdivisions, and a new airport to relieve pressure on Schiphol. On the other side of the debate were primarily ecological issues. Finally, in 2020, it was decided to build this polder. The polder is expected to be finished in 2025.

ELECTION CANDIDATES ANNOUNCED

The upcoming decennial elections have seen the candidates for all offices name themselves, with particular focus upon the four named candidates for the Archonship, currently held by His Honor, Lykos Likinios Laerthos. Candidates are expected to begin campaigning shortly, to win enough support to command the Senate and Freeborn Landholders of Ephyra for the next ten years as Archon.

All four candidates have enjoyed back-to-back electoral success from moment of entry, rising up the ranks of political office to be eligible to stand for the Archonship. They are Artalenion Kalios Bareris, Telemanthys Gorgosios Lenaleos, Aethys Arios Taentalor, and Rhadaegos Lukerios Lenennis.

All four hail from long-established political families, with Telemanthys Gorgosios Lenaleos in particular, being able to claim direct descent from Anomedes Gorgosios Lenaleos Asalinos, saviour of the Freehold during the Great War. Whomever wins, they shall inherit leadership in a world of increasing polarisation as new alliances and blocs take shape in opposition to one another, in which Ephyra has a variety of choices to male.

Deadlock leads to dead serious gestures

With the collapse of the Mexican government and the rebels in power, negotiations have broken down between the nations of ATCO and the new Mexican government over the status of the Panama Canal. Negotiations have been in a constant deadlock for over a week with no signs of either side giving in at the tables. Then, just two days ago the Mexican government has declared that all ATCO troops must leave the country and hand over the Panama Canal zone to the new Mexican Government.

With this new and aggressive stance, the nations of ATCO have been forced to resort to gunboat diplomacy to keep the vital canal open to commerce and military traffic. This morning, the President has ordered the 19th Airborne Division to deploy to the Canal zone to strengthen defenses along the Washingtonian sector of the canal. With this will bring the troops strength along the canal to well over 40,000 along the canal and the sectors that ATCO troops had advanced to around the zone during the rebellion. The Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of staff has also stated that:
"Washingtonian, as well as other ATCO and ATCO allied troops will hold their ground against aggression by the new Mexican government. This is a government that has refused to cooperate at even the most basic levels, and now threatens the security of the entire region and it's global economic impact. With this, additional forces may be sent to the zone in the near future."

It has also been declared the port of Veracruz will be blockaded by the Washingtonian Navy in order to prevent potential reinforcements from nations that have pledged their support to the new government.

BREAKING NEWS

The situation continues to deteriorate in Panama. The Confederate Government in Nordamy declares a state of emergency over the arrival of Washintonian reinforcements. Civilians are being evacuated to shelters and the newly-formed and inexperienced Nord Armed forces are mobilized.

Meanwhile, Ascoobis announces that its Governative could spare no more troops to the ATCO's toe-hold in Panama, not wishing for Ascoobis' military responsibilities to spread the army too thin. However, the state expresses confidence in its 22nd Mechanized Brigade, which has been fortified in the Panama Canal Zone for these long months. The situation at the border is an entirely different matter. All continental civilian flights have been grounded. The 20th and 21st Brigades of the 1st Army remain at the Nord-Ascoobian Border, the entire 2nd Corps has been mobilized to reinforce them. Reconnisance flights are flying around the clock both in Panama and on mainland Ascoobis.

Private Randal Williams exited the small, stuffy pillbox as his 12-hour shift had ended and he was dismissed. As a student of history, he used his walk back to the barracks to reflect on the irony of the unit's current woes. A hundred years ago tanks were pioneered to break the stalemate caused by the trenches of mechanized warfare. Yet now roughly half of his brigade's tanks are little more than awkwardly stationary turrets in the sea of reinforced concrete that is "Lennox's Wall", a series of hastily strung defensive positions that have in the last few months grown into a monster of a defensive position, a true dedication towards the philosophy of defense in depth. Williams was almost assured that the draining task of assaulting the position will prevent further violence. Almost....He looked up to the sky, where Ascoobian F-17s are aggressively buzzing and harassing the patrolling Nord fighters.

"F*cking flyboys are gonna get us all killed."

Yet he couldn't really blame them. Up until the vague promise of an influx of Washintonian troops, morale had been at an all-time low as the conflict the 22nd Mechanized Brigade and its supporting aerial elements been fighting nearly non-stop for months-on-end continued to drag on. Unlike in the armies of Ascoobis' allies, Ascoobian units are rarily rotated out and are forced to fight until the unit is ineffective. There had even been incidents of harassment against civilians and aid groups(All swiftly put down). As capable and experienced as they were, most men just wanted to leave already and see their families. Yet, until the cushy politicians worked out some kind of deal, that wasn't going to happen any time soon. Like always, Ascoobis' finest will have to endure.

All he saw was fear and tension. Above ATCO and Mexican jets performed elaborate maneuvers almost like ballet. Crossing each others paths, probably give each other the finger, and keep watch. He knew both side's aircraft had a full payload with someone's name on it. He hoped his name wasn't on anyone's bomb. A fighter buzzed his ship almost hitting it

"Hey watch it punta! You almost caused another war!" he shouted at the jet.

The head diplomat picked up his briefcase of talking points for the meeting. The fools from the old team were to blame and were fired. One fool even used his child as a bargaining chip. It was just as well as the other side used fools to try to justify their points in keeping their Mexican ATCO precious lake despite air travel being much cheaper. They made their way to the site.

Tensions Rise

Tensions between the American Treaty Coalition Organisation and the Mexican Rebels have escalated drastically.

It all started when the Washingtonian Navy advanced into rebel waters and blockaded the port of Veracruz and the Panama Canal Zone. This was met with the mobilisation of the Mexican Coast Guard and the scrambling of the rest of the newly-formed Mexican Armed Forces. Ascoobis supports Washington but can spare no reinforcements. However, units already deployed around the Panama Canal Zone and the border have been placed on high alert and reserve elements and rear echelons have been mobilised.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade has stated that the government has no intentions to get involved. However, Minister of Defence Nicolas Fletcher has placed the Defence Force on standby, should a conflict erupt.

Despite what Mexican propaganda networks have said, the Department of Internal Affairs has denied penalising those who support the Mexican Rebels. Minister of Internal Affairs James Finch has said that 'the allegations are no more than falsities spread by the anarchists in an attempt to destabilise Nieuw Zealandia'.

Earlier this year, Colmar Brunton polls showed that the Centrist Party is gaining more support. Commentators believed that this is because tensions had de-escalated and National's tough policies were no longer necessary. However, with the growing situation in and around Mexico, Centrist support has stopped increasing.

Mexico; have we reached boiling point?
Having long been the tinderbox of the Americas, the Mexican Confederacy has taken yet another turn towards further isolation in-relation to their post-war recovery effort; bankrolled in large part thanks to Karthspiri donations and tax money. The situation, as per usual, has been worsened and further stabilisation efforts halted, in large part, due to the unnecessary interference of ATCO nations, notably the Republic of Washington, within the framework of the internal political workings of the Mexican Confederacy.

With the blockading of the Panama Canal as well as the port of Veracruz, Karthspiri troops have been seen on the streets of the city of Veracruz providing security and immediate reinforcement to the local Mexican garrison in-case of any ATCO offensive action. As well as Veracruz, the Karthspiri Armed Forces also operate two other bases in Mexico which have been left mostly unaffected by the blockade.

In response to this action, the Prime Minister's Office announced that, whilst all efforts would be made to defuse and cool down the situation as well as reach an agreement preventing the future weaponisation of the Canal by any party, the Karthspiri Empire is ready, willing and able to honour the commitments it made to the Mexican Confederacy in the Karthspiri-Mexican friendship treaty wherein the Empire promises to uphold the "Political, Territorial and Economic integrity" of the Mexican Confederacy. In keeping with this announcement, the Prime Minister has summoned the Washingtonian Ambassador to explain the actions of their nation in the region as well as having, reportedly, requested the arrangement of bilateral meetings between herself and Washingtonian President Donald F. Ailles.

New PM by 2025
In a speech to this year's National Front Party Conference, Prime Minister, and National Front leader, Kristina Larathael, promised to the party that, although she would serve her full term until 2025, she would not continue as Prime Minister past that point; promising to step down as party leader by 2023 to allow a new leader to come in and lead the party in the 2025 election while she remains as Prime Minister until that election. This would mean that Mrs Larathael would become the longest serving PM in Karthspiri history, serving 10 years, provided that an attempt to remove her from the post of Prime Minister is not made after she steps down as party leader; unlikely due to the respect and authority she commands within the party that, over the years, she has moulded into her own.
