The Articulate Republic of Unidalania

Unidalania, informally TLU and formally the Articulate Republic of Unidalania, is a nation on the southeastern peninsula of the continent of Dauiland. It is bordered on the north by Avlandia and Sovak Medasic, and on the west by Richomp. It also borders the Pacific Ocean on the south and east, and the Sea of Richomp on the west. Unidalania’s coastline is roughly 30,000 miles (48,280 km) long, and the nation as a whole covers about 1 million mi² (1,609,344 km²). Unidalania sensibly chose to use the metric system, and its population of 937 million lives in one of 13 states, including the capital state of Dauilan Megapolis.

1. History

Era of Formation (pre-1135)

The Era of Formation was marked by three large waves of Dauiland immigration and colonization into the Unidalanian peninsula. The first wave occurred in the early 200s, shortly after the founding of Kevtab, a small nation in the mountain range north of the Unidalanian peninsula. As the Kevtabi economy struggled under trade embargoes from Whalani and Vyria, the aging King Moenas II ordered his subjects to expand south. By the end of the 4th century, Kevtab ruled several colonies in what are now Masaqoosateya. Soon, however, those colonies declared independence and Moenas III was forced to let them free.

The second wave happened around the start of the 7th century. Emboldened by their newfound freedom and prosperity, the former colony of Lyka expanded east, eventually reaching the coast of the Sea of Richomp and establishing tens of trading posts to enable trade with the Richompian city-states. The Lykan government encouraged further expansion, and their nation eventually reached as far as what is now Vanjin.

The third wave started in 1109 and ended in 1135, and was critical to the establishment of the Pentarchy. Lyka and its rival Syntiria had a “colonization race” of sorts, trying to out-expand the other and establish their dominance. However, they, too, were soon faced with declarations of independence; Lyka released the nations of Erisia and Arvenia and Syntiria released the nation of Praxia.

Era of Infighting (1135-1472)

In 1135, the five nations of the peninsula signed the Treaty of Lyka, creating the Unidalanian Pentarchy. The Pentarchy was a complex institution, ruled by an elected monarch and comprised of dozens of countries, from Imperially-protected Free Cities to three Merchant Republics to a slew of smaller Princely States vying for the Imperial throne.

The endless infighting of Pentarchical Unidalania climaxed in 1471, when the Richompian Empire demanded that the five countries submit to Richompian rule. Lyka, having been the first Unidalanian nation to set up permanent trade routes with Richomp centuries before, eagerly accepted the offer. However, the other four countries refused and a year later, the Richompian Empire declared war.

Era of Imperialism (1472-1557)

The Era of Imperialism begins with the Richompian-Unidalanian War of Conquest. The massive Imperial war fleets swiftly demolished their enemies’ navies, and Emperor Hythnic was issuing orders to invade his enemies by the beginning of 1473. The war lasted until 1480, when Hythnic signed the Treaty of Arvenium, bringing the entirety of the Unidalanian peninsula under Imperial rule… but the fight didn’t end there.

Following years upon years of separatist rebellions, Hythnic created a Unidalanian Peacekeeping Army and sent it into the peninsula. The army spent the next 80 years fighting insurgents and dissidents, though each time they put down a rebellion, the soldiers of the UPA sympathized more and more with the local cause.

Era of Unity (1557-1570)

Finally, in 1557, the United Independence Front, the UPA, and a disloyal Lyka declared war on the Richompian Empire. The Imperial military was occupied with Avlandian rebellions, and as such, the Alliance of Unity—as it was called—seized control of the Unidalanian peninsula very quickly. The Alliance went on to gain support in Avlandia, especially from the First Liberation Front, and retook Avlandia from the Imperials, too. By the end of the War of Unity in 1570, the once-great nation of Richomp found itself confined to its archipelago and a small portion of the Dauilandian mainland.

After the signing of the Treaty of Lykum by Emperor Hythnic IV of Richomp and General Karvis of the Alliance, the new leaders of the reunited Unidalanian peninsula drafted a constitution that made the nation an elective monarchy. Similarly to the old Pentarchy, eligible Unidalanians elected lifelong leaders, but this time, they also voted a National Assembly into office every 5 years.

Era of Stability (1570-1843)

The Era of Stability started with the Cordian Convention of 435 AFP (After the Formation of the Pentarchy). The convention enacted a series of reforms ensuring that the leaders of the Cordian faith—the nation’s largest religion to this day—stayed separated from the national government, and thus ensuring that no monarch could ever call their rule “holy”, as the Hythnics of Richomp did in the Era of Imperialism. This new state was named the Free Unidalanian Commonwealth.

Apart from the Cordian Convention, the Era of Stability wasn’t home to any major events—good or bad—hence its name. The Unidalanian population steadily grew, reaching a sizable 200 million by the year 1800.

Era of Despotism (1843-1975)

In 1843, with the support of the military, King Tagon proclaimed himself the “glorious ruler” of Unidalania and his son, Tagon II, the “worthy successor to the throne”. Tagon was assassinated months later, though his son was crowned king. Unlike the Richompians, the Tagons were brutally efficient in their takeover of the peninsula; and unlike the Richompians, the Tagons had the support of many millions of people who saw the Elective Monarchy as weak and unstable (never mind the fact that it lasted over 250 years). Though the National Assembly survived the Tagonist Coup, the new king decided that he could appoint loyalists to the seats, instead of holding elections. The Pro-Tagonists held power until 1912, when a group of usurpers known as the Anti-Tagonists (Antagonists, for short), seized the throne. Years later, another faction staged a coup… and this vicious cycle continued until 1930, when the Ascendancy—the strongest faction—forced the other groups to bow to their rule. Prime Ascendant Relise was installed as dictator and ruled for the rest of his life.

In 1970, the military found gold in the hills of a small farming community called Red River. They occupied the town, and when the rebel-sympathizing mayor refused to hand over control, Relise ordered the town’s inhabitants to be enslaved as laborers in gold mines that were to be built there.

For millions, that was the last straw. They took to the streets and rioted. Monuments were destroyed. Government buildings were set ablaze. Even the secret police turned on their commanders and joined the rebels. In 1975, after the Ascendancy collapsed, the leader of the aptly-named Second Alliance of Unity, Uki Genovis, was unanimously elected the first President of the Articulate Republic of Unidalania.

Era of Prosperity (post-1975)

The new government was to be comprised of Executive, Legislative, Judicial, and Popular Branches—largely based on Nazbeth’s government, though with the addition of a fourth branch of government. The nation’s first leader, President Genovis, ushered in a new era of peace, prosperity, and wellbeing for the Unidalanian people. Every year on October 9th, people across the nation celebrate a holiday (interchangeably referred to as Genovis Day, Unity Day, Republic Day, and Unidalania Day) and the democracy they are lucky to be a part of. There have been dozens of peaceful transitions of power, and the nation will likely never be in civil war again.

However, there have been external wars. Following the founding of the Dauiland Alliance, crazed Crimtonian autocrat Odil Rostenstaphen declared war on the rest of the continent, and though he was defeated, there have only been more foes to counter ever since.

2. Geography
Further Info: States, Capitals, and Political Leanings

Unidalania is a largely coastal and riverside nation. About 75% of the population lives under 20 miles (32 km) away from a body of water, and a plurality of those people live near the Sea of Richomp specifically. Unidalania has a large variety of biomes, ranging from the ice-capped Kevtab mountains in the north to the tropical state of Aloe in the southwest to the temperate forests of Vanjin in the southeast to the Lanic Desert in the northwest. Since it is a peninsula, the nation is largely bordered by the Pacific Ocean (to the south and west) and the Sea of Richomp (to the east). Its only terrestrial borders are with Sovak Medasic to the north-north-west and Avlandia to the north.

3. Culture

Unidalania’s long history of expansion, exploration, and immigration has led to the country being one of the most diverse places in Dauiland. No one ethnicity, background, religion, or race comprises a majority of the population, and since the founding of the Articulate Republic, the immigration process has been open to all. While a large number of Unidalanians are native to the Dauilandian continent, there are also hundreds of millions of immigrants from around the world—especially from Southeast Asia and the Indian subcontinent. Different traditions and backgrounds have merged to form new cultures, festivities, and customs that are uniquely Unidalanian. Even the Constitution recognizes this, as it describes Unidalanian culture as “critical to the national wellbeing”.

4. Politics and Government
Further Info: National Government Overview

Unidalania is an articulate republic with 4 branches of government: the Executive, Legislative, Judicial, and Popular Branches.

The Executive Branch is comprised of the Executive Triplicity—the President of Unidalania, the Vice President (who procedurally oversees the Senate), and the Administrative President (who procedurally oversees the House of Representatives and is in charge of day-to-day affairs in the government). The President is the Head of State and Government. They also have the power to veto legislation, though it can be overridden by Congress. The President is elected every 4 years and represents Unidalania on the world stage and is a member of the Dauiland Council—as are the VP and AP. The President delegates power to the Executive Cabinet of Department Secretaries, who enforce national law.

The Legislative Branch is comprised of the Senate and the House of Representatives, both of which are elected every year. Their purpose is to draft and pass national legislation and work on the Articles of Unity. The Senate has 99 members and is elected via national proportional representation. Senators confirm Cabinet nominees, confirm requests to override vetoes, and confirm requests of no-confidence. Additionally, there is a law stating that if a political party earns over 30% of the Senate votes of a state, they must appoint 1 Senator from that state. If that political party does not have enough seats, they eliminate Senatorial membership from the smallest to the largest states.

The House of Representatives has a sizable 5,000 members and is elected by state-by-state proportional representation. The House confirms judicial nominees, can request a veto override, and can request votes of no-confidence. If the House requests such a vote and the Senate approves the request, the Administrative President is mandated to call for an emergency Presidential election.

The Judicial Branch is comprised of the 15-member Supreme Court and thirteen 5-member State Courts. Judges serve 10-year terms; they are nominated by the President and confirmed by the House of Representatives. The Department of Independent Information mandates that judges be non-partisan, and if they aren't, the DII has the authority to remove them from office. The Judicial Branch is supposed to handle lawsuits and determine if new legislation is in violation of the Articles of Unity.

The Popular Branch is comprised of every citizen, resident, and expatriate of Unidalania. They are called upon every year to vote in new Congresses and every 4 years to elect the President, and are also called upon to hold elections of no-confidence in the President.

Finally, every state also has an Executive Branch and a Judicial Branch—the former composed of the Governor and latter composed of 10 Local Courts, the judges serving 10-year terms and appointed by the Governor. The Governor has the power to interpret and challenge national legislation, and pass state legislation via referendum.

6. Economy and Infrastructure

The economy of Unidalania is highly regulated and subject to government antitrust checks every few years. While capitalism is wholly encouraged, almost one third of the Unidalania’s economy is state-owned or state-subsidized, largely thanks to the nationalization of the energy industry in the early 2020s. Unidalania’s economy is the largest in Dauiland—boasting a GDP of over 30Ż trillion and a GDP per capita of about 33,000Ż—and has grown by a steady 2.5% per year since 2044. This is because of the mass urbanization taking place in the highly populated state of Aloe, in which millions of people are leaving rural environments for large cities like NaSiskbano and Aloe Juna—causing rapid growth in those regions’ local economies.

Unidalania’s economy isn’t very specialized, and is led by the manufacturing/production, IT, and electrical industries (comprising 15%, 24%, and 20% of the GDP, respectively), and both corporations and the government acquire hundreds of billions of Zoops off of exports every year. Unidalania’s primary exports are food products, electronic hardware like phones and computers, and household-scale green energy devices such as solar panels and wind turbines. As gasoline-based vehicles are banned in Unidalania, the nation imports most of their vehicles from Nazbeth via the large freight transportation systems built by the Dauiland Alliance to connect the continent.

Public transportation is extremely common, too, and can be found in every major city and most minor cities. Types of transportation range from hyperloops and state-subsidized electric airplanes for long-range travel to maglev and hydrofoil systems for mid-range travel to metro and electric bus networks for intra-city transit.

75% of Unidalanian electricity comes from renewable/green sources—37% nuclear, 19% wind, 13% geothermal, and 6% other (mainly solar and hydroelectric)—and just 25% comes from non-renewable sources—20% oil, 3% natural gas, and 2% coal. In the early 2050s, President Goa Lore’s administration ordered the decommission of most of Dauilan Megapolis’s fossil fuel energy sources and directed the Department of Infrastructure to construct a series of next-generation nuclear power plants throughout the nation.

Lore was also responsible for the Water for Unidalania Project, which, over the course of merely 2 years (and at the worthwhile cost of 200Ż billion), reduced the amount of Unidalanians without full-time access to potable water from 0.5% to 0.002%. Water recycling plants were vital to this effort, as recycled water is the source of 20% of Unidalania’s clean water. Another 43% comes from local freshwater sources, 24% comes from desalination plants built by the Harren administration, 9% of water is shipped in from other locations, and the last 4% is from other sources.

Nice work!

Canonically, 1 Zoop is worth about 2.5 2019-value USD. Maybe the DD is the same.

Hey TLU, how’s TFW going? I have reached impasse on Endgame.

Not very well. I haven't written anything since the last chapter.

Alas, so have I. I’ve encountered a few plot holes and I’m having a hard time getting around them...

I'm still as indecisive as before — I can't decide whether the next chapter should be about Scinrea, Kadhir, or Bersan.

There’s a few things that need to happen all at once if I can pull this off. But it’s quite implausible. For example, why would Marco not tell anyone that he discovered Hallie is alive before he was killed?

Maybe Greene wanted him to keep it a secret until more evidence was found — but that's also implausible.

Greene was President when Marco died — and I can’t come up with any reason why Marco wouldn’t tell him. But I’m working on it.

Plot holes. Oof.

What if Wreo didn't die?

But that doesn't fix the problem, does it?

No...

I think I have the solution. But I can’t tell you... you’ll have to wait for the next part.

Don’t you hate it when that happens?
