Libertandonien wrote:why are height and weight not pronounced the same?

The word “height” used to be spelt “highth”, from a combination of “high” and “-th”. It changed its spelling in the 18th century, but without a corresponding chance in pronunciation. The word “weight”, on the other hand, was adapted from “wight”, which was pronounced as /wixt/ when Middle English arose, and later changed its pronunciation during the 16th century to fit the spelling.
