Gjorkan Presidential Primaries Begin

The Primaries to decide who each party will nominate for the next president of Gjorka are underway. For the past decade, Gjorka has been governed by President Roman Vanderburg. Vanderburg was elected in 2010 after the disastrous presidency of Joseph Marcos, and with a wave of promises to reform Gjorka into a modern nation. During his presidency, he passed legal protections for Homosexual Couples, passed the Universal Healthcare Act, sponsored major and successful police reform efforts around the country, and extended legal protections to asylum seekers, refugees, and immigrants. However, all of these reforms came at a cost of the economy. During his first term, unemployment rose from 3% to 6%, and the stock market began trending downward. All of this culminated in his party, Forward Gjorka, to lose its majority in the 2015 Election, despite this, Vanderburg was able to secure a second term. However, this allowed several parties to rise in popularity and diminish the power of the two dominant parties. Since then little has been passed as the parties bicker about policy. Now, the 2020 election looms as the parties prepare to make their case why they should lead Gjorka. Roman Vanderburg is limited to only two terms as president of Gjorka and thus cannot run again. Here are the candidates from the other main parties.

As it stands there is only one major candidate who will be nominated for President from the National Social party. Alexei Tabor has been the presidential nominee of the party since 2000 since he became the leader that same year. He is a far-right politician with many strange views such as his belief in a Malgan World Order and is certain the Sequoyah is secretly a biological testing site for Quebecshire. As well he is advocating for an ultranationalist view on foreign policy, and the installment of fascism in the country. He is currently polling at 92%. The largest opponent is High King Weelington who is a satire candidate running in the party and is currently polling around 3%.

There are right now two major candidates vying for the Green Party nomination. The current front runner is party leader Jame Gary. She has been the leader of the party since 2010 when they split from Forward Gjorka. She is a heavy supporter of extensive government regulations on companies to ensure environmental regulations and massive fines for any person or company that violates the regulations. As well she is an avid Socialist and supports extensive social programs. However, she is criticized for running a lackluster campaign in 2015 that saw the Green Party lose 6 of its 14 seats. As it stands her polling number is 53%. She is running against Sindy Ross who was the presidential nominee in 2015 from the party. Ross is an avid supporter of Green Party measures but supports tax grants for being eco-friendly rather than fines. She is best described as a left-wing populist with wide-ranging plans such as “fix healthcare now!” with little plan to do so. Ross is also the leader of the militarist wing of the party which supports funding eco-terrorist groups to help the world realize the importance of climate change. This militarist view and her loss in the 2015 election has led someone to speculate about her electability. Regardless, she is polling at about 45%.

Right now, 5 candidates are running for the nomination from the Freedom Party, with only three having a really good shot. The first is Johna Cen, the former mayor of Baltimore under Gjorka United, who was the runner up for the primaries in 2015, and the third-place finisher in 2010. He is a strong advocate of hard libertarianism and supports reducing many government institutions. He supports removing income tax and corporate tax and instead increasing sales tax along with massively reducing the spending of government institutions. He supports the end of the Business Administration, the Department of Health, the Department of Education. As well he supports reducing the military budget by 90%, repealing the Universal Healthcare Act, and the legislation of most addictive substances. His ideas are radical by even the standards of his own party, but the members of the party are increasingly frustrated by moderate politicians being put up by the party. He is currently polling around 37%. The next candidate is Ishmael Godfried who is an assembly member from Northern Gjorka. He is a much less radical libertarian who supports smaller government and less regulation overall. Similar to Cen, he supports the reduction of the military budget by 25%, increasing privatization of the education and health sector, and the reduction of income and corporate tax. As well he supports leaving the TEU and gutting the Department of Global Relations. However, he is criticized for his support of many controversial issues such as the abolishment of the age of consent. As it stands he is polling around 35%. The final candidate is Veronica Roth who is a member of the more moderate wing of the party. She advocates for many big tent policies and has accepted all kinds of ideologies into her support base. Her campaign advocate for social liberalism, and a policy of “Do and be who you want,” and abolishing the death penalty formally. As well she supports generally reducing government funding in areas where it is feasible, and a slight reduction of income and sales tax. However, her moderate stance on many issues has come to be abhorred by many in the party as her type of candidates continues to fail on the big stage. She is polling around 20%.

Both the Gjorkan Pirate Party and the Pro-Gjorkan Initiative have only one major candidate so they are being combined here. The Pro-Gjorkan Inititiative is running Ronn Berot, who has been the candidate of the party since 1995. During his tenure as leader, the party has gone from the second largest in the country to out of the political scene entirely. Despite this, a majority of the party and the public still have a positive opinion of him. However, in the last elections, he has been losing popular support going from 37% of the vote in 1995 to 2.1% in 2015. Many believe this is his last bat at the election table. As it stands he has no major opposition in the primaries. The Gjorkan Pirate Party is running in a presidential election for the first time since its creation in 2007. It’s leader and only representative, Seban Alloy, is the only major candidate from the party. He advocates for pirate politics which supports more directness and openness to the political process. As well, he is a fervent supporter of e-democracy and increasing anti-corruption measures across the state. His party has seen a massive uptick in support as the only “anti-political” political party. However, this has been turned into an argument of inexperience as Alloy has held no major political office before being elected in 2015.
