Region: The Story of Civilization

New Goals in Mind

Matthias stood on the balcony, looking at Grünestadt. The weather was cold, the roofs of houses were covered with white snow. The sky was white from the cloudy weather, the sun being hidden behind the clouds. The city was not very lively, mostly just the homeless roaming around the city in search of food. Their life during the winter was rough, with the cold temperatures and lack of food making death not far from their soul. The church helped some, but not all, especially as they simply did not have enough resources to feed themselves and all of the poor.

However, Mathias did not care for the suffering of the homeless, only for those who kept him in power. His rise to chancellor had only occurred because of the loyalty of the aristocracy, and their willingness to bribe those who previously were against him. He was a capable leader, however, and had been one for six years. His ambitions were big, and he had ideas to implement them.

He headed inside and walked towards his office. His chief secretary, Otto Rimensberg, was sitting in his office, which was just before Matthias'.

"Otto, call in Jakob." Matthias said before entering his office and shutting the door. His office was mostly full of documents, with a huge shelf of them behind his desk. It was there that he went searching for a certain document. Once he found it, he sat behind his desk and waited for Jakob, who didn't come long after.

Jakob Tischbein was the High Commander of Grünestadt, and a part of the Council. Having been elected to the Council six years ago by the military, he had taken the position of High Commander once Matthias was elected, a position that was almost guaranteed for him, as it was almost always granted to the person chosen by the military. "You called me?" Jakob said.

"Yes, take a seat." Matthias gestured to the chair on the opposite side of the desk, reserved for his guests. "Tell me, would this plan be viable?" Matthias asked as he showed Jakob the document mentioned before. It was Estenland, the island on which Grünestadt, and many other nations, were located on. Grünestadt and another, bigger nation, were highlighted on it, with arrows pointing from Grünestadt to the bigger nation.

Jakob chuckled.

"What's wrong?" Matthias asked.

"Everything." Jakob continued chuckling. "You seriously think we can take on the Coalition?" He started laughing louder, while Matthias was just shocked. "There is absolutely no way to beat them. Even if we can beat their 21 vassals and five armies of soldiers, they will just use the tactic they have used countless times before. They will call us warmongerers and they'll call together a massive coalition together with the Archbishop. Even if we have justification, they'll still do it, and once they gather up the coalition, there's nothing we can do. They'll slap us like we're a mosquito, and we will not survive it. We will not survive the entire island being against us, even if we hire mercenaries."

"Will the Barons be fine with it?" Matthias asked.

"Look, if you really want to carry out this plan, I won't stop you, but I have to heavily advise against military conquest, or really any type of conquest that may irritate them." Jakob said. "The Barons won't be happy either for the same reasons as me, and they especially won't be happy because we just used their armies to crush a rebellion, doing that again will anger them."

"I'll think about it. For now you are dismissed." Matthias sighed.

Jakob stood up. "And please reconsider, I do not want Grünestadt to become a vassal of the Coalition. And I will make sure that the military doesn't carry out any actions against them, even if the Council has voted for your plan." Jakob walked towards the door. "Goodbye!"
