The Story of Eadgar Pomponia

The people of Coastal Zabo have been living a quiet life since the founding of their nation on their humble island. Many live practical lives and have jobs that are necessary to live such as fisherman, merchants, farmers, some even serve in the Imperial Guard and Navy. However, there is one individual on the island who stands out more than most. His name is Eadgar Pomponia.

Eadgar is a son of a fisherman and seamstress. His father tried to get Eadgar involved in the fishing industry at a very early age. Eadgar’s father Aulus would wake him up well before the sun would rise over the ocean horizon, to prep the boats and get ready for the day on the Great Sea. Meanwhile, Eadgar’s mother Gisila would have their breakfast and lunch ready for their journey out to sea. Once the boys left the shoreline, she would use the day to make some of the most beautiful textiles in Coastal Zabo. Gisila’s products were purchased only by the elite members in the community making her the bread winner within the household. This was difficult for Aulus to accept as he was rather old fashioned and believed that he needed to try harder to make more money than his wife. Eadgar, only 10 at the time felt this conflict within the household and looked for solutions. One morning Eadgar had a truly brilliant idea. He went to his father and mentioned that there were so many other fisherman out in the sea that maybe they could make more money by fishing further away from shore where the herds of fisherman flocked each morning. Aulus having heard tragedies about those who fished far from shore was reluctant to the idea and argued that it was to dangerous. Eadgar’s idea did not work for the time being but had never left Eadgar or Aulus’ minds. A few years later as Eadgar was entering his teenage years Aulus became more and more desperate to make money. Gisila had been the bread winner for years while Aulus continued to struggle with his fishing industry. Finally, on a dark overcast morning Aulus decided to take Eadgar further from shore than they have ever gone before. As usual Gisila maked them breakfast and lunch and wished them luck on their journey out into the Great Sea.

Aulus and Eadgar now an hour or two away from shore can barely see the closest boat which they guess is a good 45 minutes away from them. They set anchor and start to fish using a variety of methods, sadly neither father nor son were successful. Instead the winds started to increase on the Great Sea and the two gentlemen became weary that they had a made a grave mistake. In their frightened state they started to pack their belongings and head back to shore. Unfortunately for them the Sea had grown angry and started pouring rain on them. Just as Eadgar had finished pulling up the anchor a large wave crashed into the boat knocking Eadgar to his knees. Meanwhile Aulus was not so lucky and was thrown overboard. Eadgar unaware of this tragedy frantically called into the rushing winds, pouring rain, and crashing waves. Aulus was unable to call for his son in the rolling folds of water and was lost to the Sea. Eadgar returned home with news of the horrific event, explaining everything that had happened to his heartbroken mother. From that day forward Eadgar swore that he would never step foot on a boat again, a promise he intended to keep for his mother Gisila.

Years later Eadgar had adopted a love for math and geography two subjects he had learned from the local educator. With his new found passions Eadgar set out to explore the small Island that Coastal Zabo resides on, piece by piece, claiming the new lands for Coastal Zabo. Eadgar first travelled alongside a river, one that was mighty and broad. A river that gave live to the island, drinking water to the people of Coastal Zabo and water to irrigate their crops with. He decided to name this river after his father as his father was mighty, courageous and gave life to those around him through his spirits. Following the newly named Aulus River south, Eadgar came across a land to the west a small space that provided fine shorelines for fishing, and vast land that provided basic necessities for people to live. It is there that Eadgar claimed the first expansion of territory for Coastal Zabo expanding the new fledgling of an empire.
