Exactly! For the prisons to make a profit, the prisoners must be forced to do lots of work. Forced labor without pay is the definition of slavery.

**** New WA Resolution Notification *****

There is currently a new General Assembly Resolution at vote. When expressing your opinion, please note which Resolution it is for. And remember Texans, your individual vote does count!

The new Resolution is called:
"Prohibit Private Prisons
A resolution to reduce income inequality and increase basic welfare.

Category: Social Justice Strength: Mild Proposed by: Christian Democrats

The General Assembly,

Persuaded that prisons should aim to reduce recidivism rates"...

<see the General Assembly for full text and to vote>

Commentary: The World Assembly wants to regulate the prison system of every member nation in the world. They want to require you to own and operate your own prison system despite the cost and give you no option to outsource it, possibly saving your nation a great expense. No, we do not want to let the General Assembly dictate the price of prisons in our nation. Just say no. NewTexas will go on record as AGAINST on this Resolution. This is only the opinion of NewTexas. We look forward to other Texans' opinions and comments on this Resolution. If good arguments to the contrary are made, we will reconsider our position.

The Texas response was flat on the last GA vote -- Affordable Transgender Hormone Therapy -- which was passed after gaining 76.6% of the vote. As a reminder, all we are looking for is a simple 10% of Texans to say one way or another. We are a force for change in the WA. Every vote counts! There were 3 publicly-expressed opinions on the last Resolution with the final Texas tally running 0 FOR and 3 AGAINST and 0 ABSTAIN and 0 UNDECIDED. Texans were unanimous! Yay!

If you would like to take part in shaping the world you live in, please vote. Voting is a right and a privilege, please consider using it. And, if you are not a member of the World Assembly, we strongly encourage you to join.

All Texas WA Member nations please vote. Please make your Texan opinions known in Texas by 11:00 PM Saturday and in the World Assembly voting booth by 11:00 PM Texas Time on Sunday the 21st. Current voting in The World is running - Votes FOR: 6137 Votes AGAINST: 5347

Big Tex

PS: Remember, be sure to vote at the World Assembly too!

So is Ford, but no one is accusing them of slavery.

But let us turn this around. Are prisoners working for the state on a road gang considered slaves? I don't see how you can have this both ways.

Prisons are going to try to find things to keep the prisoners busy. Whether that is laundry, cooking, farming, or prison industries. Prisoners sitting around with nothing to do is a riot waiting to happen. The vast majority of prisons do not force inmates to work. However, most prisoners happily take prison jobs so they can have money on their commissary account. They do so because a stay in prison is mind numbingly boring. Most prisoners covet the road gang jobs and other projects that take them outside the walls for only a few hours.

Many prison jobs also teach skills. Several states train and use prisoners to fight wildfires. In LaGrange, KY, prisoners staff the prison ambulance service. From operation of commercial laundry equipment to auto mechanics and agriculture, these prison jobs provide more for prisoners to learn than just how to be a better criminal.

When people commit crimes, we have to do something about it. The US Constitution prohibits lobbing off a hand, whipping, or caning. Can't even lock miscreants in town square pillories for rotten vegetable target practice anymore. (Pity that. I'll bet petty crimes rates would drop dramatically if we brought the pillory back.) Executing shoplifters is out of the question. So prison it is.

Why does it matter if someone is making a profit off of it?

Big Tex, my Dad just started eating proper food again yesterday after being fed nutrient solutions through a nasogastric feeding tube for a long time. He's still having trouble keeping his food down. So on his behalf I'll accept a Potato & Egg Taco. Thank you. He still needs more rest and spends most of the time asleep. :(

Good morning Ladies and Gentlemen of Texas,

I am alright but still recovering. Currently, I have not yet been discharged from the ICU and I have been bedridden since I was hospitalized. I would like to thank everyone from the bottom of my still recovering heart for your greatly appreciated prayers and support. Queen falcona stark, thank you very much for your Get Well Hugs which my beloved wife and all three of my sons gave me from you.

Furthermore, I will immediately agree to go to hospital if you inform me that I need to be hospitalized.

Most definitely, we need to make our position more known. Maybe we should write a resolution ourselves?

Fort verden wrote:I am alright but still recovering.

Good to hear it. Keep up the recovering part. We all pitched in to get Leia a black belt in the wifely art of skillet. You will need that recovery part to keep up.

Fort verden wrote:The Skillet Strategy?! Oh God Buddy! NO!

Why not? All wive's have a [insert deity of choice here] given right to wield the skillet in order to make sure they are clearly understood. (In lieu of a skillet, a rolling pin may used as well.)

Fort verden wrote:NO my love. WORST.IDEA.EVER.

Gonna have to disagree with you there. (See quote and response below.)

As it has been since man first learned to fry something in a skillet, the cast iron skillet remains a remarkably effective tool in the wife's arsenal of dominance over the home. I rest my case.
