Dawnbreak - Philosophical Monks and Gems - Part 16
In response to The Great Lizards of The Lizard Army

As Ylja walked through the city, she noticed that there were a few Inns around, where many of the city’s various travelers from across Cuchimilco came to stay. As the sky darkened and night began to settle, Ylja walked towards one of the Inns to rent a room, but before she could, a cloaked Cuchimilco cut her off and stood in front of her to block her way.

The Cuchimilco was nearly entirely covered, from head to toe, and large rope-like belts held the cloth in various points across his body. His gem was obscured, as well as his hands, and he looked at Ylja up and down with suspicion. If Ylja was able to see spirits, then she would notice that several of them would be whirring around this Cuchimilco in an odd manner, but he certainly gave off a strange aura regardless.

“You are Ylja, of the Draush, correct?”

Philosophical Monks and Gems - Part 17

Ylja was blind to the spirit realm - that was not her domain - but she could sense the strange aura surrounding this man. She was rather ensnared by it; she could tell this was someone of interest. She would tap his forehead just the same as others, so they would be able to communicate.

Ylja: "<You give off a mystic energy, sir. Tell me, who are you? And why come over to me? Is there something you sense? Perhaps you know something about the quest I am on? Do tell, I am curious.>"

She does not seem to sense any danger from him. She crouches down to be able to be face-to-face with the shorter Cuchimilco.

Malos

Daphne was a bright eyed, innocent twelve year old girl who lived at the edge of the wood, where the cedar and pine trees met and there was enough of a clearing in the Shasting Mountains to build a house, watching the peaceful wilderness below.

Daphne wasn’t born in…wherever she was. All she knew was that she was at the southern border of Farrine, though the border was just some fence about a half a mile ahead. When her parents died, her grandpa agreed to take in her and her brother. She was just two years old. So while her brother was a city boy, she knew the woods. She knew the land. She harmonized with the birds, and danced with the fireflies, and was popular with the butterflies, and tended to her own flower garden. But what she liked best was the frogs. She had met many, but only one frog, which she named Thaddeus, actually stuck around. Every morning, just past the break of dawn, Thaddeus would come to visit.

Ribbit, Ribbit, Ribbit.

Daphne: “Thaddeus, are you alright?”

Ribbit, Ribbit, Ribbit.

Daphne: “You’ve never Ribbit three times before.

Ribbit, Ribbit, Ribbit.

Daphne: “Thaddeus!”

Daphne attempted to scoop him up in his arms. But as soon as she did so, he leaped out of them! Daphne called his name in a frenzy and chased him for quite some time. He was an agile frog, so to keep up she was forced to hop over logs, rush into the bushes, and jump over the stream. Daphne stopped for a moment to catch her breath. As she did so, Thaddeus jumped in the pond.

The pond? It was more of a puddle now. What had happened? Daphne swore to herself it was different-no, no. Why would it be? It certainly didn’t help her sense of unease that the area was unusually shady. For a moment, she forgot that Thaddeus was underwater. She craned her neck so much to ache as she searched for the tops of the trees.

Daphne: “Woah…I never knew they were so tall.”

Daphne visited the pond every day. How was it that she didn’t pay attention to the trees before? I suppose the forest always had new surprises at store. Just like those red wildflowers…red? They were yellow yesterday. Was she lost? No, this was certainly the pond. Daphne figured she didn’t pay good enough attention to the surroundings, and her mind filled itself with false details.

Grandpa had always warned her about climbing trees. He told her he had a bad fall once, and that’s why he needs a cane. It was such an awful story Daphne never liked climbing trees much. But these branches were so wide, so inviting. What harm would a little bit of climbing do? As soon as she stepped on the first branch, which was very steady, she immediately climbed to the next, and then the next, and then the next.

Daphne: “Hello there!”

After fifteen branches up, she stopped climbing, interrupted by a bluebird’s nest. She always heard the bluebird’s song later in the day-

Chirp Chirp!

Daphne: “Oww! Stop it!”

The bluebird was four times its size! Its claws were sharp, and Daphne cried out in pain as they dug into her shoulders. The bluebird began to rise, and so did Daphne.

Daphne: “Help me! Somebody!”

Daphne was carried away from her tree, toward the unknown. She yelled again, hoping her brother or Grandpa would hear the call. There wasn’t anyone else to hear her. Or at the very least, she didn’t know of anyone else. But why, in the distance, are the leaves rustling…

Grandpa was trying to hunt when he heard Daphne’s screams.

Grandpa: “Daphne’s in trouble…”

Grandpa left behind his gear at once and hobbled toward the sound. He didn’t hear Daphne anymore, but he had good ears. He knew how sound traveled, and he knew where Daphne was headed.

Back in the cabin, a young man prepared a bow and arrow. There were visitors in the woods, he could tell. Even in the far distance, below the mountains, there were fires and whispers. At night, when he crept to the summit, he heard lots rustling in the bushes. He was too scared to investigate, but something was coming, alright. And he was fully prepared to meet it with full force. A bear, perhaps? Or something far worse?

Dawnbreak - Overture
In response to Freemer

“Kids, kids,” Mithras yelled, his wolf mount rushing towards the outskirts of a forest. Where the woods began to be prominent, three kids stood idly chatting and picking wildflowers. Mithras reaches them with a scowl on his face. “Why are you so far away from the campsite?! And where are the others?”

“They went back early.” Said one child.

Mithras’ face takes on a softer look. His hands also loosened the grip on the reins of his wolf. “Well, that’s good news, at least. Come now, the ceremony is about to start.”

The highborn dismounts to pick up the children. However, as he does so, Mithras hears rustling from the dense foliage of the woods. Instinctively, he lunges for a child just as a fox pounces from the bush. Successfully getting the child out of harm’s way, Mithras reaches for a shortsword attached to his hip, but his wolf reacted better, burrowing its fangs into the animal’s neck.

With the fox dead, Mithras and the children walk over to the corpse while highborn’s wolf shakes its head to loosen the fur stuck to the back of its teeth. The dead fox had bloodshot eyes, its teeth and claws so sharp Mithras could feel them digging into his flesh, and its face permanently etched with agitation.

“That… that could’ve been worse. Let’s go back. I wouldn’t want anymore surprises jumping for us.” Mithras picks up the three children, hoisting them onto his hound’s back, and riding back to the campsite.

Silvelyn was but a mere fifteen years of age when she began her first hunt in the Night of the Beasts. It was then she learned what beauty meant in the life given to her, the thrill of being the hunter and the hunted filling her with glee throughout the night.

Atop Shrike, a hippogryph given to her once as an egg, she flies above the woods observing all that is below; the trees digging their roots ever deeper to consume the land, the earth in turn splitting itself to tear the roots and their masters asunder, smaller foliage attempting to catch animals to feed on their blood, and both predator and prey trying to outmanoeuvre each other in a bid to live another day.

It was then Silvelyn heard a scream, turned her head to its source, she saw a child being dragged by a large bluebird with its claws. “Sounds like our first target, Shrike!” The hippogryph swoops down, holding its green and orange wings in place to glide to the bluebird's level.

Now closer to the bird, the tribeswoman tries to slash it out of the sky, but the bluebird reacted quickly, grazing what would’ve been a fatal blow and fleeing from Silvelyn and her hippogryph. The animal also dropped its prey, which is now falling to the ground. Plummeting further, Silvelyn caught the little girl.

“Close one, ain’t it?” Said Silvelyn. “Let’s get you somewhere safe.”

Shrike flew farther into the forest and to the outskirts where the pair started, its vibrant wings beating hard. Using its hooves and talons, the beast landed on a patch of grass. “That could’ve been dangerous, girl. No need to thank me on the great save, but you really shouldn't be going to the woods all on your own.” The tribeswoman gets off her beast, lending out her hand for the girl to do the same. “Anyway, what's your name, girl? Someone might be looking for you right now.”

Dawnbreak RP - Thotoa

Once the beast had safely reached ground, Daphne hopped off it on her own, rejecting Silvelyn’s attempt to help. Now she could get a good look at Daphne. Her hair was chestnut colored and matted, her face filthy, her clothes torn with more patches than original fabric, and she had no shoes on. Her expression had any joy removed from it, and her dark brown eyes were wide. She backed away silently from Silvelyn.

Then suddenly, the girl began blabbing away…in Farrish. And it wasn’t just Farrish. It was a strange dialect of it, only spoken by people in a specific part of the northwest. The girl spoke tearfully and yelled a few things at Silvelyn, and she pointed wildly to the creature. But while her emotions were somewhat clear, her words were not. Daphne soon realized that Silvelyn couldn’t understand her, and Silvelyn likely realized Daphne couldn’t either.

Daphne: “Thotoa! Thotoa! Thotoa!”

She chanted this word over and over and looked anxiously around the forest. She backed away slowly from Silvelyn.

Daphne: “Thotoaaaaa!”

The girl’s head snapped towards rustling in the bushes. Out came an old man with wild gray hair and a wooden cane, intricately carved. He was equally filthy but looked much kinder. The girl rushed to him and cried in his arms.

Thotoa: “There, there.”

Thotoa looked to Silvelyn and cocked his head curiously. He seemed more curious about her than the beast, which was nothing like he’d ever seen before.

Thotoa: “~You spoke Common to the girl. I haven’t heard someone speak it in years. Language always fascinated me as a child. I was told I’d hardly find anyone that spoke it, but I kept up my studies, even out in these woods. I wanted to be a historian and a scholar. Can you believe that?~”

The way Thotoa spoke was old and archaic. It was understandable to Silvelyn, but clearly a very different kind of Common, especially combined with a strong Farrish rural accent.

Thotoa: “~I have many questions for you, but I shall not press. What I do know is that you saved my granddaughter’s life.~”

Thotoa whispered something to Daphne. She slowly let go of him, moved up a few steps, and bowed her head at Silvelyn.

Daphne: “Emmensi.”

Daphne looked to the beast and smiled. Some of her typical brightness and joy returned to her face.

Daphne: “Emmensi oa nobo nian.

Then she returned to Thotoa’s side. Thotoa smiled about her with pride.

Thotoa: “~She just said thank you. And she thanked your…creature as well.~”

Daphne pointed to herself.

Daphne: “Daphne.”

Then Daphne pointed to Thotoa.

Daphne: “Thotoa.”

Thotoa: “~Thotoa means grandpa in Farrish.~”

Daphne then pointed to Silvelyn, inviting her to share her name.
____
With his bow still drawn, the eighteen year old boy went to investigate the noises, growing closer to his cabin. Traveling down the mountain and into the woods, he heard the distant cries of a fox, and people speaking in a language he didn’t understand. Whoever these invaders were, he’d do everything he could to make sure they left these woods and never even laid eyes on his grandpa or sister.

Queen Fabienne IV addresses the Republic of Imantica
CC: Imantica

A public letter has made the rounds. It is addressed to Imantica, and, more specifically, their Doyen.

Honored Riniya Emeratu En'Azra, reigning Doyen of Imantica,

I am Queen Fabienne IV of the Ravellier clan, representing the Kingdom of Morvainne. After having spent more than six hundred years in complete isolation, we have been elated to learn that you have brought Imantica back to the world stage, and it has been exciting to find out that your Kingdom has turned towards democracy in the meantime.

Though many of your people may not remember, we have been on good relations until King Harbard, The Accursed, had been forced to abdicate, and the Amanthril clan replaced the Eranyon family, and thus became the new royal bloodline of Imantica. At the height of the Fourth Crimson Crusade, the Kingdom of Morvainne was falsely accused of having supported the Empire of Ghermeza, and the Crimson Cavalry in particular, having allegedly been promised power and riches.

To our disdain, Morvainne has never been able to make amends, and to see the conflict between our two great nations resolved. My predecessor, Queen Valessara II, has, unfortunately, passed away, precisely eight winters ago. I have since served our Kingdom as her Queen, and, having learned about your open-minded and peaceful nature, I am hopeful to be allowed to travel to Sunnarelle, which, delightfully enough, has been renamed from Svorequai, too, as I have been informed! I wholeheartedly believe that it is long overdue for the Kingdom of the Moon, and the Republic of the Sun to reignite the embers of our long forgotten friendship.

I shall wait for your response, which I hope will find me with your words of approval.

Until the moon finds us again, walk beneath gentle light!

Yours respectfully and sincerely,

Queen Fabienne "The Hummingbird" Ravellier IV

Dawnbreak RP - Taking Action

Perhaps the famine crisis was worth a second look.

Dawn and Patrick had done something rarely done before: they commenced a meeting without everyone being able to be present. Hallow and the Gardener were an ocean away. Dawn and Patrick had promised not to pass any major laws, or make any major changes. Patrick had agreed to this. But when letters and reports of famine and deaths and running out of graveyard space flooded the palace, it could no longer be put on hold. Dawn put aside her quest for another child.

The meeting room felt awfully empty without the two other Royals and some of the council. Dawn flicked her fingers to send a short flare in the air.

Dawn: “This meeting has now commenced. We are here to discuss something important: the famine in Farrine.”

This immediately caused discussion and rising voices of confusion. A famine? How had they not heard of this before?

Dawn: “Order, order!”

Patrick: “I know you all are confused. I am too. But letters have been sent, claiming there’s a famine. Of course, it could all be a large conspiracy…”

Dawn: “It’s unlikely to be so. I’ve gotten clippings of local papers. Guards have also reported seeing farming villages in devastating states. Our people are starving. We cannot let this go on.”

Patrick: “You sent your guards?”

Dawn: “No. They were…well…Hallow’s guards.”

Patrick: “Hallow’s guards? How long has this investigation gone on? Did someone else send the guards?”

Dawn refused to respond. Patrick suddenly grinned.

Patrick: “Twila sent the guards.”

Dawn slightly flinched at that name, but she maintained composure.

Dawn: “This is all frivolous chatter. The point is not the past, but rather a course of action. I do not believe in letting our people starve.”

The council nodded and murmured in general agreement.

Dawn: “I am free to take suggestions from the council.”

Patrick: “She says that because she has no ideas.”

Dawn: “Patrick. Be mature and respectful. It is your duty as a king.”

Dawn wished there was some way to impeach a ruler, but there really wasn’t. No ruler was beyond the other, so nothing could be done if a ruler was poor; a poor ruler was still seen as much better than any average person. In fact, the only way a crown could be taken away is if they practiced some banned, dangerous form of magic. But even then, many leaders got away with that in secret.

Council Member #1: “I have a proposition.”

Dawn: “Stand.”

And the council member stood.

Dawn: “Do tell us.”

Council Member #1: “I propose we give food to those in need.”

Everyone else groaned, and they quickly sat down. Patrick just laughed.

Patrick: “What a brilliant idea! Oh, but this is no time for jokes. We have no way to fund such a thing! Free food? Then they’d expect it forever.”

Dawn: “Practical solutions, everyone.”

Another more confident council member stood.

Council Member #2: “Perhaps the nation could fund their own farms.”

Dawn: “Now we’re closer.”

Council Member #3: “But how can we save everyone? I’m assuming thousands are affected.”

Dawn: “More like millions. We cannot save everyone. But we can do what we can.”

Council Member #3: “So we’re going to let people die?”

Dawn: “We’ll do our best. That’s all e can ask of ourselves. Now, any other ideas?”

Council Member #4: “The farms idea is on the right track, but it takes time. What if we forced Botanists to help?”

Council Member #5: “Forced them? They wouldn’t agree to that!”

Council Member #4: “Of course they would! It’s their patriotic duty! And they’re Botanists. Come on now.”

Council Member #6, a Botanist, banged their fist in anger.

Council Member #6: “What’s that supposed to mean? Botanists are glad to help, but you cannot tear them from their own families and work and expect them to be okay growing food all day!”

Council Member #7: “I agree. There’s gotta be some incentive.”

Dawn: “We’ll pay anyone who helps.”

Patrick: “We can’t afford that!”

Dawn: “Oh, Patrick. You’re the least frugal person I know. The incentive wouldn’t be too grand, but enough that you’d be a fool not to take it. I like it. A program shall be instated for Botanists to leave and grow farms by the most afflicted areas. Patrick, do you agree to this?”

Patrick: “I suppose, if it doesn’t come out of my money.”

Dawn: “Don’t worry, you won’t have to sacrifice your emerald table.”

A few people bravely chuckled. Patrick glared at them.

Dawn: “I will fund it in its entirety.”

Patrick: “Once the food is grown, will people receive it for free?”

Dawn: “No, Patrick. I’m not a fool. They’ll pay a small amount. But so many people will pay for food that I’ll get more money than what I paid the Botanists originally.”

Patrick: “Huh. Perhaps I’ll pitch in.”

Dawn: “Think it over, money boy. The meeting is over now. Go home.”
