A Brewing Crisis

The president looks wearily at the stack of reports on his desk. Sighing, he reaches for the cigarette case. It is late in the evening, but Matias Lazlo is no closer to solving the looming geopolitical crisis in front of him. As he takes a draw on the cigarette and opens another intelligence dossier, he reflects on the circumstances that have brought him into office.

The election of 1950. A time of chaos, as Teodor Polerozs had announced his intention not to run a third time and retire entirely from politics. The Ultras had then rallied around the vice president, Oskar Gobol, who had been a faithful follower of Teo but had never garnered much love from the public. To compensate for the loss of Polerozs's charisma, the Ultraconservative candidate had attempted to double down on the 1942 platform that had taken the Republic's voters by storm - not realizing that the general population had grown weary of foreign intervention since the wars in Astoniland. As a former soldier, Lazlo had brought the anti-war sentiment into the arsenal of the listless Social Democrats, giving them the edge they needed to win.

1950 had been a big upset, like 1942. Lazlo may have taken the presidency, but both the moderate and Ultra wings of the NKP dominated the legislature, and he had to contend with a hawkish military and intelligence establishment. It had been impossible to get anything done in his first year. Now Lazlo was looking at the business end of the worst flareup in Entente-GU tensions since 1946.

Lazlo thumbs through the dossier. Tierra Gloria had never been a very robust nation, but it had been held together by the will of Alexandyr Kerenskiy and played a key role in the Astoniland interventions. It was unclear what had happened, but Tierra Gloria was on the verge of collapse. The intial SIB reports suggested that something had happened to Kerenskiy- either he had been abducted or gone into hiding.

Evidently, Tierra Gloria's neighbor New Rhomania had heard similar rumors. Rhomanian tanks had massed on the border, causing Valedorian officials to react with a harsh ultimatum. Olivedrabia had remained silent, but they were undoubtedly watching with keen interest. The whole situation was a bomb waiting to go off, and it was looking like Lazlo would have to be the one to defuse it.

The president stubs out the remains of his cigarette before reaching for another. It is going to be a long night.

Policy

Segius sits for his standard 0500 brief with his ministers. Of note were two major developments: the Phoenix like rebirth of Internationalist Communism in Rossiean, and the developing situation in Tierra Gloria. Gathered before him were his Consuls, Military Staff, ministers, and his new trusted advisor, one Arruns Dossenius, who has the unenviable task of filling the chasm Servius Tullius's retirement has opened in the Olivedrabian government. Segius gestures to the foreign minister to begin the forreign affairs brief.

"As we know, the situation in Rossiean has taken a turn for the worse, with the Communist Party regaining power. It is likely that the Rossiean state will once more look towards spreading their disgusting ideology abroad once more. Recently, the Valedorian govt issued an ultimatum to Rhomania to back down from its military build up on the Tierra Glorian border. It is, in my opinion, likely that the rest of the Entente will follow suit."

Segius turns to Silvester Koleno, head of the intelligence service. "Has your agency discovered anything?"

The Otrokan suit responds emotionlessly. "We're still trying to piece together what is happening within Tierra Gloria itself. Best we can guess is that some sort of internal power struggle occurred, and the country is on the brink of collapse. As for Rhomania, their reports to us line up with our findings. They are massing many of their best equipped and trained units on their western border. We expect an invasion to occur within weeks, and the Tierra Glorian resistance to be weak and disorganized. As for the Entente response, they may be more limited than expected. Deskoslovakia has an anti war president, so it's doubtful they will push too hard to save their southern neighbor, most likely just choosing to establish a rump regime in the north. We estimate that the Rhomanian invasion will be over within months, with Tierra Gloria being split much like what Rhomania was proposing in '46."

Koleno finishes his report. "In the case of Rossiean, we very much urge that counter espionage efforts be engaged immediately. We must prevent them from driving a wedge between us and our allies, at all costs. 1925 must not be allowed to happen again."

Segius nods. "What is the military's stance?"

Quintus Liburnius looks at the other generals, who nod in approval, and rises. "It is the position of the military that an invasion of Tierra Gloria is very feasible. We suggest airborne landings behind their lines to disrupt their logistics, communication, and organization while a joint New Rhomanian - Olivedrabian force pushes west with a combined arms assault. This strategy will, in our opinion, result in the quickest victory with the least casualties, and give us a strong position from which to negotiate terms with the Entente. The rough terrain, however, will impede armored operations, so we suggest a force of predominantly infantry."

Segius mulls over the information in his head. Memories of the '46 incident flash in his head, but times have changed. He nods. "Inform Rhomania that they have our full support in an invasion of Tierra Gloria, and organize a force to send to western Rhomania. Koleno, I want task force devoted to countering Communist subversion in the Gladian Union. Send me weekly reports. Maintain our embassy in Rossiean, but keep our citizens on a short leash in the country, ready to evacuate at any time. Also, I almost forgot. Arrange a meeting with the military contractors for the mechanized forces contracts. Dismissed."

As the men disperse to do their duties, Segius sighs. The fate of man rests on the Deskoslovakian reaction...

The Second Red Tide

Communism is back like a reborn phoenix who broke from the bourgeois plot of Luckyan Yuri, and the mission of Sergei is undone. Now proclaimed Chairman Gregori Grisha Dima is ready to carry the torch once again with more vigor than ever. The Red Tide has been terminated by the Revisionist Scum who wanted to Detente with the Capitalists and Reactionaries, but no more. The Red Tide Policy will be revived and the Detente advocates will have no voice on the matter of Foreign Policy. This policy was introduced at the End of the Spring Revolution and the Consolidation of the First Communist State of the USSR. One flaw in Stanislovian Policy was that later in his life, he abandoned the Revolutionary Way instead of going for the Revisionist Idea of Luckyan Yuri to promote Socialist Party to win elections that are always prone to be rigged by the Anti-Left Establishment.

Now, the Chairman has directed a new wave of Socialist and Communist support all across Coldonia in order the achieve the Dream of the Proletariat Internationale, where all capitalists and reactionaries are gone. The Revolution, the Struggle of the Worker has to be propagated through the continent and topple the unjust regimes in place. CIC will infiltrate once again into foreign countries, find Revolutionary forces, finance, organize, unite, arm, and prepare them for the Revolution. Even though Lavosianism and recent tensions between the Gladian Union and Channel Entente are on trend, they will not ignore us and will most likely keep an eye on us too. After they come to the power of Luckyan Yuri, this policy has been revoked to appeal more to Detente, but that only destroyed the Red Tide that was in full swing in some countries. No more, Gregori Grisha Dima will return with a Tide stronger than the one before.

He is now thinking about a different approach as the old one was proven by Alexei Stanislov to be too slow and ineffective. New times require new methods, subjects to rally behind the Proletariat. As the Revolution stood triumphant in Sergeigrad, so shall it triumph in the rest of Coldonia.

The Second Tierra Gloria Border Crisis

It seems that stability will not last for long over the continent. As Tierra Gloria is on the brink of collapse, the eastern neighbour, New Rhomania, is threatening to invade, gathering large forces at the border. Several diplomats and geopolitical experts are suggesting that the Gladians are looking to expand, a wish clearly obvious after their refusal to co-operate with the rest of the continent in the Conference of Akitawagata. King Kanarikio announced publicly that in case of invasion, there will be war between the Entente and the Gladian Union, given that one of our allies is under attack. Also, since Gladian influence in the Augustinean sea must be as low as possible, a Ueshidese intervention “is certainly guaranteed”. Several groups of cruisers, submarines, as well as squadrons of fighters and bombers have been moved in the ports, respectively airbases on the western island of Oibokura. Ueshido is also willing to send infantry divisions in Tierra Gloria, hoping to hinder the possible advance of the Gladian troops. However, that matter shall be discussed with the other allies in the faction.

Another Day, Another Bullet

The Rhomanian installations on the border with Tierra Gloria constituted some of the most impressive in the Gladian Union, forming a wall of bunkers, aerial bases and supply depots. Ever since the 1946 Rhomanian-Tierra Glorian border incident, these installations had only seen increased investment, and nearly half of all permanent Rhomanian military personnel were stationed here. However, in lieu of the crisis in Tierra Gloria, that number had ballooned up to 75%, not to mention the Olivedrabian reinforcements in recent weeks.

The 'provocation' of the Entente was not unheard by the Rhomanians, their embassy in Deskoslovakia decrying their demands for de-escalation as 'liberal lies and deceit, aimed at preventing rightful reorganization of national borders'. Regardless of the Entente's efforts, the build up only continued, with some rumors claiming that the Rhomanian Nuke had been moved from its secured base..

Negotiations for a full-scale invasion, with the aid of Olivedrabia and the GU overall seemed inevitable, but for now, it seemed to be a game of chicken.

Czechoslovistan was not blind to the political chaos on the borders of Tierra Gloria. With the Entente and Gladian Union alike squabbling to figure out to do in the face of New Rhomania´s blatant war preparation. Now while they saw, and noted all this, they... felt no inclination whatsoever to intervene. In fact they decided to make their voice across the sea clear, sending messages to the various nations, most of them going along the lines of,

¨This is federally allowed message from the Upper Council. We are contacting you to make it clear, we have no intention whatsoever to intervene in the coming war. While we refuse to shut down trade with you as well as your enemies, any attempts to coerce us into combat, will be met with scorn and judgement.¨

With the message broadcasted, Czechoslovistans second measure of its plan began. The economical side that is...
With the message out, more messages were sent to Czechoslovistans allies and some possible business partners including Az-bandai, Astoniland, Portuia, New rhomania, Monarch Gardens, Ueshido, Olivedrabia and Deskoslovakia. With all of these powerful nations in mind, the requests for increases in trade deals was sent. Specificallym Czechoslovistan was looking to expand its economic power by reaching out its claws of diplomacy to the nations participating in the war, to neutrally sell weapons, rations and equipment to both sides.

Whether or not these nations will accept the deal, is yet to be seen...

Statement From The President

The image of President Matias Lazlo is imperfect and flecked with static, but his face is visible on television screens across the Republic and beyond. Live television is not a new invention in Coldonia but it has become more widespread in Deskoslovakia since the last years of the 1940s.

“Citizens of the Republic. Today I will be addressing the rising tensions against our southern neighbor Tierra Gloria. Recent instability has left that country leaderless, and brought into question whether Tierra Gloria can endure as a sovereign nation.”

“The potential collapse of the Tierra Glorian government, and the political vacuum such a collapse would bring, represents a security risk not only to the Republic, but to Tierra Gloria’s other neighbors, Entente and Gladian alike. However, brinksmanship does nothing to resolve the issue. The recent actions of Rhomania’s leaders have been, at best, rash and ill-considered.”

“Therefore, I am calling upon New Rhomania to relax their hardline stance and attempt to resolve the issue diplomatically, as civilized nations should before they send their young men to the slaughter. Everything is on the table- New Rhomania only needs to take their seat.”

“As of this broadcast, Deskoslovakian troops and naval assets have been deployed to secure strategic points in Tierra Gloria, where they will assume a defensive posture. They will soon be followed by similar contingents from other Entente nations. These troops will remain in position as long as their Rhomanian counterparts continue to take an aggressive stance.”

"I strongly urge the leaders of all nations to consider the prospect of a conflict between the great powers - and the hideous cost of life it would entail. I have seen the ugliness of war firsthand, but my personal desire for peace should not be mistaken for weakness."

War? Again!?
Astoniland has publicly announced through radio which's the most widespread method of communication all over the country, that it'll not be intervening but is still willing to sell materials to both sides, stating that they have no resentment to the Gladian states and said, "We respect the decisions on both sides and seek not to fight nor to be personally biased to any side we seek to keep business with both sides.", yet the Astonilandian armed forces were prepared a little bit more with the excuse to put down crime in rural areas.

Cuts in the budget.
The government, in their strife to defeat crime, had to sacrifice some budget for other branches cutting the funding for the education in the Western Isles and minor eastern islands with one of the junta members stating in private that their Laviosan monks could educate them dismissing the possibility of indoctrination from Laviosan forces and a resurgence of the crushed ideology, this also affected the popularity of the junta.

In the Western Isles, on paper, they were mainly loyal to the junta. Still, two famously republican strongholds began changing their votes for their local Republik veterans, who made up most of the candidates, but this didn't worry the junta much due to their small population (11,352 combined). The rest, of course, had a slight illegal Laviosan presence which was kept on close watch by the Republican soldiers.

The Eastern Isles instead went with the Nasionale Partido, a mix of the old apartheid government, nationalists, and the tiny minority of Gladians. This change was not only in the small islands but in the bigger ones too, with many looking up to this folk who had promised reforms for the rural and better protection from attacks by the Yakuza or Cartel members. But unfortunately, this made them prime targets to get shot or murdered one way or another.

Most of the cut funding went instead into the police buying them uniforms, new weaponry, and retiring the old Tommy gun in the Eastern Isles, seeing it was ineffective in penetrating the thick jungle trees and was getting somewhat outdated for the times, instead of giving them M14s, and M3 Grease guns, of course, this was only for the big departments with the smaller ones either keeping the Tommy gun or getting an old rifle from the civil war.

New reforms were also passed in an attempt to make the police more professional and stop the increasing corruption due to the free fall of the Astonilandina economy (Which as slowed down). So it'll just be a matter of time to see if the old reforms hold enough to make sure the police become better at fighting crime.

Valedorian Defense of Tierra Gloria

The Ministry of Defense announces the movement of infantry, equipment, and air and sea assets into strategic positions in central and northern Tierra Gloria, arriving shortly after the Deskoslovakians. They await orders from the Faithful General and his esteemed advisors in the war room, should New rhomania launch an invasion, which is predicted to occur within a matter of weeks. All precautions have been taken to ensure the fortification of Tierra Gloria.

Across the country, the call to arms is generally unwelcomed. Valedorian officials of the Assembly opposing the ultimatum cite the expenses of the war in Astoniland, despite the Council's position being in alignment with the Faithful Leader's. A prerecorded broadcast of his response is played across televisions and radios of Valedori in an effort to calm the disgruntled populace:

"Citizens, we are met once again in the atmosphere of uncertainty and hostility. You are afraid, and rightfully so. Peace in Coldonia has been disturbed and disdained by the warmongers of Rhomania. They have sent their troops to belittle and subjugate a struggling population in the south, threatening the position of the Entente and western Coldonia. Members of the Gladian Union have yet to respond to our calls for peace.

Citizens, we raise our flags and our weapons in commemoration of the promises of loyalty and comradeship that were made during the Entente's founding. I will not abandon those promises because they are enshrined in the morality of man. Understand that in advance. If we must fight, we will fight with dignity and honor. Hail Valedori."

The Valedorian 'crusade' to protect the nation of Tierra Gloria swept the nation of Rhomabia by surprise, with many of the government officials predicting a Deskoslovakian ultimatum first and foremost. Despite this, Rhomanian intelligence caught wind of the unpopularity of the call to arms, and soon, the Department of Intelligence and Broadcasting began a radio broadcast not only in Rhomania, but from its foreign embassies.. completely predicting they would be shut down:

"Valedori! Deskoslovakia! Your great call to fight 'the 'Satana of Rhomania' does not deceive us, nor does it deceive your own people! You will send your men to die for a cause they do not care for, for a people they do not care for, and all for what? Posturing, to project an image to the world. Let it be known, Rhomania does not submit to bullies, and should you sew the wind.."

Movement and Hardware

Regular Forces

With the condition in the Augustinean Sea escalating, elements from the Home Fleet are moved to bases in Rhomania, linking up with the Rhomanian Navy (This equates to 2 Carriers, 1 Battleship, 2 CAs, 6 CLs, 20 DDs, and 8 Submarines). The prior garrison force of 2 Fighter Squadrons and 1 Medium Bomber Squadron (totalling 200 and 25 planes respectively) is doubled, while the Southern Army Group is assembled, consisting of 1 Armored Division, 2 Divisions of Mechanized Infantry, and 6 Divisions of regular infantry, including the 11th Legion "Solis", trained in highland warfare. This force is over twice as large as that mobilized during the '46 crisis.

Special Forces

Another, concealed development, is the deployment of the Sons of Tullius, a special forces task group, to New Rhomania, set to be parachuted behind Tierra Glorian lines to sever communications, blow up supply depots, and capture bridges and crossroads, and gather reconnaissance. They are roughly 2000 in strength, spread about 4 450 man elements for combat missions, and 4 50 man elements for reconnaissance. They SoT are a light infantry force, with a few personal anti tank weapons such as rocket launchers, AT grenades, and AT mines.

Hardware

Segius meets the contractors for the Urus, Lupus, and Vulpe projects in the proving grounds. They've had a few years to develop a new Breakthrough tank, an Armored Personnel Carrier, and a replacement for the Civil War era armored cars, and present their designs.

Presented by Gladius State Arms, the same company who designed the Centurion, the Ursus Breakthrough Tank is a armored behemoth armed with a 120 mm main gun, much larger than the initially 84mm, and now 90mm gun on the Centurion. Additionally, it possesses thicker armor. This tank requires a very powerful engine to remain at Olivedrabian Standard Tank Speed, or OSTS, which is 22mph. This makes the tank much more expensive than the Centurion, and its deployment is not intended to be on the same numerical scale as the Centurion. Rather, it is intended as long range anti tank and anti fortification support, with its powerful gun. It is suggested there will be, at most, 9 Ursii for every Centurion Tank regiment.

The Lupus APC is based on a 6 wheel suspension, and possesses armor impervious to small arms fire. The vehicle will serve to transport squads, with a capacity of 7 passengers. It's also armed with a turreted machine gun, to provide anti personnel support. This vehicle, combined with the standard 2.5 ton truck, will play a major role in the goal to mechanize the Olivedrabian infantry. It has a max speed of 20 mph off road, and 45 mph on road.

The Vulpe is a light armored car designed for reconnaissance. Armed with a machine gun, it has a 4 wheeled suspension, and has a two man crew. It's a very fast vehicle, capable of reaching 58 mph. It is set to replace the aging Lepus (Rabbit, not Wolf!) Armored Car produced in 1942, which is the current armored reconnaissance vehicle.

Upon seeing the demonstration of these vehicles, Segius is satisfied, and approves for them to enter production. It will, of course, take some years before they are significant in number, as factories are retooled for them.

As for old hardware, the frames of the Testudo Heavy tanks could be repurposed to serve engineering, mine sweeping, and artillery purposes. Therefore, they've begun to be modified into the Testudo-II, a recovery vehicle, Testudo-III, a minesweeping vehicle, and Testudo-IV, a self propelled gun of 105mm. The Testudo-IV will be used until a dedicated selt propelled artillery design is approved.

Everyone stared on towards the King and all the members of the High Parliament of Portuia, anxiously awaiting the dreaded news on the current tension between Entente and the Gladian Union.

"On the 17th of May, 1951, I, the Prime Minister, the in-parliament Government - A Frente Nacional, the Secretary of State, the Minister of Defense, the Minister of Intelligence, the Minister of Economics and the Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces convened in a private meeting for the discussion regarding Portuan stance on the issue at bay. Our verdict is as follows:

The aide to the King, the Secretary of State, would unroll a sheet of paper, outline with gold and silver and marking the stamp and signature of the crown. The Secretary of State would continue on by saying,

IF the Gladian Union and their little puppet, the state of Rhomania, wishes not for peace and to back down and for war, the Most Serene Kingdom of Portuia shall stand with its allies in the Entente for the protection of Tierra Gloria against the barbarians of the east and their constant bloodlust for expansion and destruction. It is not only the choice of the government, but also the choice of our patriotic citizens that wishes to see through our agreement with the Entente as we are not soft-spinned or an easy pushover of the Gladian Union.

By the will of our gracious God, by the Heavens and all its might, Portuia will bear all its strength upon the Gladian Union if need be, alongside of our allies in this conflict! The verdict is clear! Portuia shall stand hand in hand, side by side, with the Entente Alliance. Nothing shall sway the opinion of the people and its government, not even the strongest of guns or unnatural weapons.

The royal message spread far and wide, through the Kingdom, from the highest and the lowest of Portuan society, the news was heard. Parents feared, yet adventurous young men are enthusiastic of this upcoming war, viewing it as an experience like none other and a duty to serve theirl Fatherland. The Armed Forces has publicly announce that it will move unto Partial Mobilization of the Armed Forces, which means the reserves would be activated but no conscription of the citizenry has been authorized yet.

It is reported that the army has moved towards the south-eastern border towards the Brynerus and Oncadian borders, alongside air wings being moved to military bases in the area and tanks being transported by train to the area. The River Flotilla under Port Trinatine and Port Arturo will bee activated and will begin patrolling the Portuan side of the lake.

Many citizens are flocking for support of the government, with many holding demostrations in front of various Gladian Union embassies, yet there are a sizable few that wishes to seek an alternate plan rather then a head on push towards the Gladian Union, and a further quieter group of people, hushed down by propaganda and government speeches, seeks for Portuia to retract its statement and to get uninvolved with the conflict and to simply leave the Entente, with these members being supporters of the minor Radical Conservative-Catholic Party and Hardline Underground Communists alongside independent anti-war proponents. But as mentioned, these are mostly snuffed out by war propaganda.

With the Portuian announcement, the Brynerus National Guard is mobilized, numbering some 90k men divided among 9 divisions. The Brynerin National Guard is small, but it has been subjected to Olivedrabian training and equipped with modern Olivedrabian equipment. Brynerus will resist any Poruian invasion of the homeland to the very last, and will make the northerners pay for every inch of forest. Brynerus may be small, but just like King Fychan Maddox, who held off the Gladian Empire for 20 years, the Brynerin people will never surrender.

As the second border crisis of Tierra Gloria is in full sweep, 3 infantry divisions and 1 mountaineer division have been sent in Tierra Gloria, securing, along with Valedorian and Deskoslovakian troops, strategic points in the country. The Ueshidese troops, upon arriving, started fortificating several settlements in the country, hoping to use the mountains of TG to their advantage, should the war start. The King’s stated also that “young men should volunteer for their army, should the fatherland call”. This motivated over 100.000 men, up until now, to enroll in the army, and the number is expected to grow. Troops stationed on the islands of Ueshido, especially in the western island of Oibokura, have started military exercises at the highest level, preparing, as Marshall Tobuku stated, for “full-blown war”. Anti-air stations in the north-east of the country have been ordered to stay put, and reports claim that the nukes developed by Ueshido have been moved from their original facility to a secret location.

With the army moving south-east towards Oncadia and Brynerus, installations of naval guns and artillery dig-ins were being prepared all across the border towards Brynerus, in which the Great River and Lake of Hohsteiner splits both nations border, while along the Oncadian border, inter-connected trenches and defence hardpoints would appear all across the border. Portuan Men, numbering 368,000 Men, forming a basis of 15 Divisions with an average size of 24,000 Men in each Division. Roughly 70%, 257,600 Men would be allocated towards the Oncadian front and while the rest is manning the defences against Brynerus. Which means more then 10 Divisions are on the Oncadian Border and 5 on the Brynerus Front.l

Portuan doctrine will be focusing on small-unit tactics, in which individual commanders are granted more autonomy to think and operate on the battlefield, afterall the best leaders are the ones that knows what is happening. Despite using divisions as the largest peace-time sized forces, Portuan tactics would emphasize battalion-regiment sized conflicts. Transportation between Brynerus and Portuia, aswell as Oncadia and Portuia would be halted as the Ministry of National Security for Espionage would begin launching missions of counter-espionage in the Portuan Kingdom. The Portuan Chiefs of Staff would immediately begin battle planning between their Entente allies in order to organise and plan better regarding both Portuia's defences and the general plan mounted by the Channel Entente
