You are correct, mostly. We had to do everything in our power to ensure American soldiers would not have to die on their shores, and nukes were a tool to solve that issue. But the problem is that we didn’t finish off the Japanese until the USSR joined the fight and started sweeping North Korea, did the Japanese know they were officially screwed. In fact, a documentary mentions they only briefly mentioned the bombings as stated by a prominent member of the War Cabinet of Japan.
