• A Changing of the Guard
  First and foremost, I must apologize. The last issue of the Times contained an assurance, written by yours truly, stating that the regions of the Augustin Alliance would remain Strongholds “For the foreseeable future.” As the astute among you have no doubt realized, Lands End is currently converting to a Frontier.
  So, says you, what gives?
  Well, the region isn’t going to be remaining a Frontier for long. This switch has been initiated with the primary purpose of allowing Alliance Administration and the Central Strategic Committee to have access to a nation that enjoys the on-site powers of the Governor. Why would they want such a thing? For ease of moderation and administrative work, primarily.
  Recently, for instance, a nation was banned from the region for homophobic comments; however, this ban required burning a not insignificant amount of influence to make put into effect.
  Obviously, this is not ideal, and it would be preferred that such troublemakers and rabblerousers could just be dealt with summarily, with no cost.

  Security concerns are also a factor; obviously, with the amount of influence accumulated in the region, Lands End is not at much risk from major raiding activity but nevertheless it would be possible for some trouble to be caused. Again, the office of Governor carries with it some powerful and useful tools for dealing with such.

  So, again, rest assured that this brief stop as a Frontier is just that - brief. It will not be the status quo.

• New Editor, Same Program.
  Howdy. Peacockastan wrote a nice article last issue, wishing you all a fond farewell. Here, now, am I to say hello.
  For those who may not know me, I’m Bonnie Blue Republic, longtime Chief Executive of the region. This is the first time I’ve held the top spot for the Shareholder’s Times, but it’s not my first time affiliated therewith; I have written the RP section for several months now and have previous experience as a staff writer from several years ago.

  While for the most part things are going to be continuing as previously, there will be a couple changes to the paper. First and foremost, the date of publication. Rather than publishing at the end of each month, the Times will be published on the first Tuesday of each month, containing the RP recap and recruiter leaderboards from the month before.

  I would also like to, as my predecessor did, involve others in the running of this great newsletter. If you would like to be a part in the writing staff of the Times, reach out, and I’ll see what I can do about finding something for you to help out with.

  I look forward to what will hopefully be a long and fruitful tenure here.

• F/S, Two Months On

  The last issue of the Times brought with it word of an update to Nationstates - the Frontiers/Strongholds update.
  One thing notably lacking, though, was speculation on what this might mean, because honestly, I had no idea.

  Now that there’s been a little time for this to all sink in, perhaps the biggest revelation is that there really hasn’t been all that much of an impact. This does actually mesh with what was broadly expected.

  Of Injunctions, which some expected to immediately flood the Security Council, only three have actually passed.

  In other expected changes, well, recruiting numbers don’t seem to have changed all that much. Unfortunately, hard data on such things can be difficult to gather; however, anecdotal evidence would seem to suggest that the proliferation of tools to assist with manual recruiting that occurred a couple years ago had significantly more impact on overall recruiting impact and ease than F/S has.

  The major lingering impact will probably be the ability for regions to do as Lands End is now, and rotate in a new Governor to assume the duties and powers of an absentee Founder.

  As to how Frontier-ness is different to the old Status Quo for User-Created Regions? Watch this space. Next month, the Times talks to some regional leadership who cast an already extant and functional region adrift.
