The Soviet Armed Forces, also called the Armed Forces of the Soviet Union (Russian: Советские Вооруженные Силы, Вооруженные Силы Советского Союза), are the armed forces of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics. Originating with the Red Guards formed ad hoc at the beginning of the Russian Civil War, they have since served as the primary body for the defence of the Soviet Union's borders and people. Owing to the nation's size and complexity, the Soviet Armed Forces are among the largest and most diverse militaries in the world, both in terms of personnel and organisational structure.

Since 1948 the Soviet Armed Forces have consisted of the Worker's and Peasant's Soviet Army, the Soviet Air and Air Defence Forces and the Soviet Navy. Under the previous All-Union Military Service regulations of September 1925 the State Political Directorate (OGPU) was also under the purview of the Armed Forces. However, with the formation of the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MVD) the Political Directorate has been folded into the MVD's structure. Though the uniformed personnel of the MVD continue to train alongside the Soviet Armed Forces.

Despite its relatively short time as an organised military, the Soviet Armed Forces have fought their way through some of the most expansive and violent campaigns in modern history; developing a strong tradition of loyalty to the people and tenacity in combat. The experiences of the Russian Civil War and Great Patriotic War have seen it emerge as a powerful and innovative military force, committed to the security of the Soviet people.
