  • Aaron Gerslin, Foreign Minister

The Office of the Ambassador-General, abbreviated to AMGO, is located in the International Precinct close to the Chamber of the League of The Western Isles in the International District. It is an organisation dedicated to forwarding the foreign policy agenda of Ainslie in all areas of The Western Isles that do not have an ambassador and is generally responsible for Ainslie’s representation in international organisations and events. In addition to this, the Office of the Ambassador-General oversees the day to day operations and workings of ambassadors throughout The Western Isles. The Office provides advice to the Foreign Minister, ensures an efficient and effective execution of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ goals whilst also offering skills in negotiation and representation on behalf of the Foreign Minister. It is led by the Ambassador-General, who acts as the chief ambassador and negotiator for Ainslie and is directly accountable to the Foreign Minister. The Ambassador-General’s Office is distinguished from the Attorney-General’s Office (AGO) which acts as the democratically elected official in charge of the judiciary. The AMG0 was created in 2017, when Ainslie formally joined the League of The Western Isles.

Role
The Office of the Ambassador-General performs a piecemeal of roles that align with the strategic interests and intentions of the Unified Electorates and these have developed rapidly since its creation in 2017.

The traditional role of the Ambassador-General was to act as a de facto Deputy Foreign Minister, taking up the role of chief negotiator and representative of Ainslie where it was not appropriate or possible for the Foreign Minister to personally be involved. The Ambassador-General also commonly accompanies the Foreign Minister to events and to important diplomatic meetings. Shortly after the creation of the office, two additional functions were delegated to it from the wider Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The first of these is being directly in charge of advising and assisting the network of embassies and consulates that Ainslie has in other nations. Whilst the Ministry retains much of the administrative role, AMGO has taken up much of the support and advice role. Secondly, upon the ascension of the Unified Electorates of Ainslie to the League of The Western Isles, responsibility for forming and running a delegation to that organisation fell under the scope of the Office. As such, AMGO gets most of its exposure in recent times from its deputy leader also serving as the Ahnslen delegate to the League. It is important to note, however, that despite this being a very public role and the reason that many of its employees work for the office, there are still a number of roles it performs. Also of note is that the scope of the Office does not include representation to the Gael Four Commission or the Climate Response Council, two forums that Ainslie is also active in.

Goals
The following is a list of the major areas of concern for AMGO and what much of their work is dedicated to delivering. These are set by the Foreign Minister in collaboration with the Cabinet, the Prime Minister and the Ambassador General.

They are:

  • Climate action and economic restructuring

  • Mitigating the effects of human induced climate change

  • Disrupting and dismantling organised crime

  • Improving responsiveness to natural disasters

  • Fostering informal networks of partners to create an international consensus, rather than forming blocs

  • Protecting national sovereignty where reasonable

  • Ensuring open dialogue

  • Strengthening the rules based international order

  • Fair, just and rational change
