NEW WALDENSIA

The Royal Republic of New Waldensia, commonly called New Waldensia, is a Parliamentary Republic in northeast Straegos. It is bordered on the north by the Arctic polar region, and on the east by LinkWest Florida and the Ardat Sea. New Waldensia covers 1,031,137 square miles and has has an estimated population of 39,192,500.

New Waldensia is comprised of five princely dominions: Hussia, Waldensia, Venalda, Toulode, and Arnaud. The capital of New Waldensia is the city of Valdenton in the dominion of Waldensia.

Etymology

New Waldensia takes its name from a prominent figure in early regional history, Peter Waldo. Waldo led a religious movement that served to reinvigorate Christianity in the region that later became New Waldensia, leading a revival that brought Waldensianism to a position of dominance.

The standard way to refer to a citizen of New Waldensia is as a "New Waldensian."

History

The area now known as New Waldensia was originally inhabited by an array of wild, northern tribes. In the 800s, a Christian movement led by Peter Waldo swept through several of the mountainous tribes, leading them to reject both paganism and Papistry and embrace the Waldensian faith.

Over the next three hundred years, there was much conflict in the region, as Waldensian believers spread and became persecuted minorities among several of the other tribes. This came to a head in 1537, when the Great Waldensian War broke out. The core Waldensian clans (now the Principalities of Waldensia and Arnaud) were the target of a coordinated invasion that nearly achieved the destruction of the Waldensian forces. However, the key battle of Rorΰ was a decisive victory for the Waldensians, who managed to shatter the main enemy force despite being outnumbered. Over the next year, the Waldensians successfully fended off another invasion and launched a campaign that obliterated the opposition forces and brought much of the region under their control. In 1539, the victorious Waldensians forced the other tribes to sign the Treaty of Luserna, which established religious liberty and established the supremacy of the Waldensian tribes.

In 1593, Waldensia and the four other principalities signed the Unification of the Realms, officially merging into a confederation

Over the next two hundred years, New Waldensia (to differentiate from the principality of Waldensia, the core origin area of the faith) expanded from the mountainous regions to reach the sea. A revolt in Hussia rocked the country in 1721, and was followed a century later by the Great Civil War of 1844 to 1847 between Hussia/Venalda and Waldensia/Arnaud/Toulode.

Parliamentary reforms were implemented in 1851, leading to more democratic governance.

Geography

GEOGRAPHY

New Waldensia is located in the high latitudes of the northeast quadrant of the Straegos continent, just across the Ardat Sea from the island-continent Norland (West Florida). From an extensive coastline with nearly two dozen inhabited islands, to coastal and interior hills and mountain ranges, New Waldensia is a nation of topographical and geographical diversity.

Four major rivers runs generally west-to-east from the interior highlands. Rocky peaks and glaciated valleys dominate the western frontier, while the northwestern reaches of the Dominion of Arnaud border one of the southernmost ice caps. Moving to the east, the topography becomes a large plateau slowly tapering down in altitude, punctuated here and there by hills. The eastern half of the country is generally coastal plain, with some low coastal hills in the southeast and northeast.

North of the mainland, at around 80°N, sits Odslig Isle. This sparsely populated island and accompanying archipelago is home to some of the furthest north populated places on the globe.

ENVIRONMENT AND CLIMATE

With the bulk of the country located at high latitudes (mostly above 60°N), much of New Waldensia is a subpolar climate (Dfc), with short summers and harsh winters. Areas close to the sea tend to be somewhat more moderate than the interior (subpolar oceanic, Cfc), though some interior locations can have very wide seasonal temperature fluctuations.

Some areas, primarily in Venalda and below 60°N, have a humid/temperate continental climate (Dfb).

The northwestern reaches of Arnaud border polar ice cap.

Government

The country now known as New Waldensia was once a Confederation of five principalities, each led by a hereditary Prince. The five princes elected a rotating Crown Prince that led the nation, with the Council of Nobles serving as the legislative body.

In 1851, that changed. The Council of Nobles became the House of Nobles, and an elected lower-house Parliament was introduced, and the Prime Minister being the head of government. Further reforms reduced the amount of land controlled by royalty and nobility, and restricted their powers.

ROYAL TITLES
• Crown Prince: temporary, elected for six-year term as head of state by the five Grand Princes.
• Grand Prince: hereditary, heads of the five princely houses.
• Prince/Princess: held by the eldest child of a grand prince, or closest heir if the grand prince is childless. Held by spouse of a Grand Prince or Prince, but not considered in the line of succession.
• Count/Countess: held by subsequent children of a grand prince.
• Baron/Baroness: held by siblings of a grand prince, or grandchildren of a grand prince.
• Baronet/Baronetess: held by children of a baron/baroness.
* spouses are not considered in line of succession, and for counts and below, are simply called Lord/Lady xxxx

NOBILITY
• Duke/Duchess: hereditary, landed non-royal.
• Count/Countess: hereditary, landed non-royal.
• Baron: hereditary, landed non-royal.
• Baronet/Baronetess: lowest ranked non-royal nobility (non-hereditary).
* a noble's eldest child is given the subordinate rank, while the rest of their children are simply called Lord/Lady xxxx. Barring action by each noble otherwise, landed possessions pass solely to the heir.

Landed nobility raise revenue through property taxes (half of assessment), mineral permits, and other fees (such as park entry or toll roads), in addition to any commercial enterprises they operate.

The House of Nobles is comprised of all Princes (excluding Crown and Grand), Dukes, Counts, and Barons. All legislation must originate in Parliament, the lower legislative body. The House of Nobles debates legislation, and has power to amend or reject bills. If the House of Lords rejects a bill twice within a calendar year, Parliament, the lower legislative house, may send it directly to the Crown Prince by a two-thirds passage.
