Republic of Reann

Reann (Reannese: [ɾeɑn:]), officially known as the Republic of Reann ([d̪ɘɨn'ɾin hɑ: ɾeɑn:]) is a unitary parliamentary republic in southern Gael in the Western Isles. It shares a land border with Balnik to the east and Lesva to the north and is otherwise surrounded by the Southern Sea, where it shares a maritime border with Thromsa and Ainslie. The capital and largest city is Mandrecht located in the northern part of the country, with approximately 2.4 million people living in the County Mandrecht. Consisting of three provinces, the country has a total land area of (circa 110,000km2) and a population of approximately 9.2 million people. Administratively, the country is divided into three provinces and 31 counties.

During the wider Dandelion War of 1694, the Coidra Revolt invoked Alteran intervention in the conflict, leading to the establishment of an Alteran protectorate in Reann. The rebellion of 1720 led to the annexation of Reann as the sixth commonwealth of the United Commonwealths and led to the downfall of the traditional Dociarastai-Reannese ruling class and the Alteran plantations. Limited and gradual industrialisation began during the 19th century in the country, focused in Mandrecht and Lendra. The later half of the 19th century began the rise of nationalism, focused on cultural revival and the expansion of political rights. Increased tensions between nationalists favoring independence and unionists favoring continued union with Altera led to the Reannese Civil War from 1915 until 1919, when Altera brokered a peace treaty between the two sides, leading to the independence of Reann. Political antagonism and violence continued well into the 1930s. (Imperial war). Following the Imperial War and the national emergency, the Social Democratic Party gained the premiership for the first time in its history since independence. Beginning with the premiership of (????), Reann would embrace a state-led economic policy, characterized by extensive state-ownership within the economy as well as expanding the burgeoning social welfare system and expanding the rights of the labour unions, helped with the discovery of oil and natural gas in 1972. The 1950s, 60s and 70s were characterized by almost continuous SDP governments, being able to govern by itself or in a government coalition with some of the minor parties and even the conservative Our Fatherland from 1967 until 1971, in a system later dubbed as the “post-war consensus”. As the Gael Crash occurred in 198?, grinding the economy to a stand-still, with unemployment rising to ??% by 198?. In the 198? legislative elections, for the first time since 1958, Our Fatherland was able to become the largest party in the Reannese Assembly amidst divisive elections, gaining control of the premiership under a minority government. However, the 1990 legislative elections called after the dismissal of the Assembly would bring a surprise victory for the National Union, enabling them to embark on major economic reforms. Throughout the 1990s and 2000s, Reann underwent a massive economic rebirth, being dubbed the Gaelic Tiger.

Reann is a highly developed country that consistently ranks high in rankings for quality of life, education and healthcare, as well as economic freedom. The Reannese economy is based on the service industry as well as the petrochemical industry. Since the Gael Crash, Reannese economic policy shifted from a statist led industrial approach, promoted by the Social Democratic Party during the 1950s and 60s, into a system focusing on maintaining internationally competitive corporate taxation and legislation and a robust service industry alongside the petrochemical sector, that accounts for around a quarter of the national gross domestic product. This has allowed the country to maintain an extensive welfare system, with universal healthcare and a comprehensive social security system.

Described as a unitary parliamentary republic by the Reannese constitution, the Prime Minister of Reann serves as the main executive head of the country and as the head of government, alongside the popularly elected, largely ceremonial Presidential office. Legislative power is wielded by the Reannese Assembly (Reannacht Tadhleade), a unicameral parliament with 245 members of the assembly. Power within the assembly has traditionally lain in three main parties since independence; the Social Democratic Party, Our Fatherland as well as National Union. Most governments have been based around one of the three major parties, with additional parties occasionally entering government coalitions. Reann is considered to be a middle power in the Isles and it is a member of the Gael Four (?), the League of the Western Isles and the Western Isles Trade Organization.

Government and politics

The Reannese constitution defines Reann as a unitary parliamentary republic within the framework of a representative democracy. The head of state is the largely ceremonial president, while the main executive head of the country is the prime minister, while legislative power is wielded by the Reannese Assembly, a unicameral parliament. Local governance is shared between provinces and the counties.

Presidency

The head of state of Reann is the President of the Republic. As per the constitution enacted in 1920, the presidency is primarily a ceremonial office that appoints the Prime Minister as elected by the legislature, appoints and dismisses the other ministers of the Reannese Government as per the recommendation of the Prime Minister, opens sessions of the Assembly and confers state honors. Nevertheless, the presidency continues to be responsible for the foreign relations of Reann. Moreover, the President exercises supreme command over the Reannese Defence Forces as the commander-in-chief of the Defence Forces. The President is directly elected via runoff voting and may serve for a maximum of three consecutive six year terms.

Demographics

The Reannese population stood at 9,284,422 according to the 2023 population census. With an estimated total fertility rate of 2.02 children per woman, below the replacement rate of 2.1, Reann has a relatively high birth rate for a developed country, leading to an estimated annual population growth rate of 0.78%, when accounted for natural increase and immigration. The median age stood at 36.2 years in 2022.

Reann is largely a monoethnic country, where the Reannese constitute a majority at 94.27% of the total population. Most Reannese people however have mixed ethnic heritage due to a long history of foreign dominance and settlement. The country also has a growing immigrant population, with a total of 532,671 people, constituting 5.73% of the population, having an immigrant background. The largest immigrant groups originate from (insert, large Balniki and Lesvan presence?).

Language

According to the Reannese constitution, Reann is a bilingual country, with the constitution designating Reannese as the "national language" and as the "first official language", with Alteran designated as the "second official language". However, Alteran is more widely spoken in the country, with 64% of the population speaking Alteran as their first language according to the 2023 census. Generally, Alteran is more widely spoken in the province of (northeast) and the eastern coastal counties of (peninsula), while Reannese is more widely spoken in the southern rural counties of (peninsula) province and in the west in (west) province, with the city of (insert) being the largest primarily Reannese speaking city in the country. Most of the population however is bilingual, being able to speak and understand both Reannese and Alteran.

With bilingualism, most public services and government notices are in both official languages, as well as most media outlets having platforms in both languages, with the Cheiser ha Raidio en Telefisio reserving two television channels for both languages, CRT TF1 and CRT TV2. Media legislation dictates that all television and film in one of the languages needs to be subtitled in the other language; foreign production needs to be subtitled in both. In education, all students of public and private schools are to be educated in both their native language as well as the other official language, officially referred to as the "secondary domestic language" by the education authorities.

Economy

Reann maintains a mixed high-income economy, featuring a primarily privately owned economy and large state-ownership in certain key sectors. It ranks high in economic freedom rankings and the human development index and has a lower than average income disparity, with low amounts of poverty. The country is a founding member of the Gaeltic Trade Union and a part of its free-trade area.

The Reannese economy is diversified and is primarily focused in the service industry, a prominent manufacturing sector and the exploitation of natural resources, primarily offshore oil reservoirs. Mandrecht serves as one of the regional centers for the information technology sector and various other sectors. Manufacturing continues in the form of shipbuilding, the automotive industry and various precision equipment industries and with a growing telecommunications industry. Agriculture is primarily focused in the south-east of the country and constitutes 1.8% of the national gross domestic product.

Cuisine

Examples of Reannese cuisine; marntan norinn, siochan and farmer's sausages

Reannese cuisine traces its history back centuries and combines traditional Reannese elements with those found from neighbouring countries. The cuisine is traditionally based on meat and vegetables which are further supplemented by mushrooms, seafood and dairy produce, while more contemporary examples combine foreign spices, vegetables and cooking methods, which is becoming more popular with the local populace. Reann has historically lacked a stable source of spices, so traditionally many dishes were stewed for long periods and combined with herbs, producing hearty flavors for the food.

Well-known Reannese dishes include various casseroles and stews (most famously the siochan) filled dumplings, sausages (farmer’s sausage, chillos), breaded cotlets and various seafood soups. Another very common soup is tioldahn, traditionally made from leftovers and often including bits of sausages, fatty pork cuts, potatoes and various vegetables. A popular example of contemporary cuisine is the potluck casserole, utilizing roasted chicken, cream, bananas, peanuts and bacon as its main ingredients.

Popular everyday beverages include tea, coffee, milk and various soft drinks, with the locally most known soft drink being colloquially known as the apple soda, a dark coloured apple flavored soda, whose production started in the mid 19th century with a growing steady supply of sugar. Alcohol has a long historical tradition in Reann, with beverages such as beer, cider, gin and whiskey being commonly produced and consumed in Reann.
