The Democratic People's Republic of East Asia

The Democratic People's Republic of East Asia is a large Asian based nation bordering the Eurasian Union and Republic of Indonesia. Currently, East Asia stands as the world's largest economic power, although its GDP per capita isn't particularly high. Founded by leftist revolutionaries following the collapse of the People's Republic of China, East Asia tries to live on the legacy that its original founders wanted, by serving the worker and serving the people. The World overall these days is far tenser than OTL, and globalization has been horribly slow. Despite all of this, East Asia is continuously growing, and will one day be ready to take back the world for the people.

Etymology

East Asian is how you refer to one of the Democratic Republic's citizens. The name is pretty self explanatory, as the nation happens to be located in East Asia.

History

The World of East Asia developed much similarly to OTL, however, there were a few differences that caused history to turn upside down.

The main point of divergence occurred in 1854, after the signing of the Kansas-Nebraska act in the United States. The Republican party had been highly radicalized before this event, and negotiations between the Northern and Southern States quickly broke down. In 1860, the Republican Abraham Lincoln called for the secession of the Northern States, which quickly broke away and formed the Federal States of America, or FSA. Thus the American Civil War began, or as the United States says today: The Northern War of secession. Due to the vast industries of the FSA, victory eventually came in 1864, and the FSA was officially recognized as a sovereign entity. The old USA was quite upset over this, and sought to reclaim its former glory. Nationalist rhetoric was common-hold, and the US quickly became more aggressive.

In Asia, times were quite turbulent, as mass influxes of Europeans began changing the societies around them. Japan quickly modernized in the face of possible European aggression, and managed to ride through the 19th century with relative ease. China and its vassal's on the other hand quickly came under the influence of countless foreigners, subject to unfair trade, land concessions, and countless other exploits. Rebellion was common during this time period, with the Manchu dominated Qing dynasty increasingly unpopular.

By the Early 1890s, world tensions: Especially between the USA and Great Britain, exploded into the first world war. The use of machine guns and massed artillery turned millions of men into corpses, and Europeans and Americans slaughtered one another across many continents. The Yankees (FSA) at this point was still stronger industrially than the Americans, and managed to hold them off. This came at a horrible cost to them though, as the war left some 400,000 Yankees dead. By the end of the conflict, some 8.7 million people had died. Russia meanwhile underwent a communist revolution, and declared itself the Union of Eurasian Socialist Republics. It would stay out of world affairs for the next 3 decades. The world could only wait until the next war.

The old USA was a terrible place for minorities, and the first war only compounded their suffering. Run by the highly revanchist and racist Democratic Party, if you weren't a protestant white in the US, chances were that you'd be stuck working in a polluted factory or farm, with no chance of rising. In comparison, the FSA had liberalized due to the US, and became quite cosmopolitan in comparison.

Alas, peace would not last, and soon enough the 2nd World War would begin. Since the end of the first war, the European powers had once again built up their stockpiles of weapons. They saw one another as threats to their individual interests, and wanted to be sure that they themselves would ultimately be at the top. The old USA also proved quite worrying, as it had been invading and subjugating nations in Latin America ever since the end of WW1. An incident in Cuba would be enough for the war to start.

On June 21st, 1912, a US warship exploded outside Havana Harbor. The United States saw this as a chance to grab Cuba, and immediately blamed the Spanish; They then declared war. It later turned out that America had blown up its own warship; The whole "blame the Spanish" was just a ploy to take more territory for themselves. WW2 had begun, and the whole world would be involved once more.

The 2nd World War would be one dominated by the trench. Across the North American and European continents, armies dug down into the earth, and prepared for the worst. Once again, outdate tactics caused the losses of millions, while front lines barely moved. New inventions such as poison gas and the tank were created to break deadlock, and were employed en masse by opposing sides. While Europe and America burned, the people of China rose up against their imperial masters, and established a republic. However, the republic would prove to be a disaster from the start.

Plagued with corruption, inefficiency, and domestic violence, the first republic of China remained a third-world hell hole by western standards, and struggled to keep up. When WW2 ended in 1919, China broke down into groups of warring generals and mini govts, all who claimed to be the "true China".

In the New World, WW2 resulted in the great weakening of the FSA, which now plunged into depression. Across Europe, old empires fell and new states rose. India freed itself from the British. France turned to socialism as the answer, while the former German empire descended into an ultranationalist regime the world had never seen.

WW3 was only to be expected, and it came in the summer of 1935. The Empire of Japan; an incredibly racist and militaristic state, launched its barbaric invasion of China. Taking advantage of the republic's poor situation, the Japanese army overran Manchuria within months, and soon began its invasion of the Chinese heartland. They were brutal, and murdered millions of civilians. Records documenting the Japanese occupation of Nanjing mentioned the rape of over 30,000 women, and how civilians were lined up and shot by marauding Japanese soldiers. Most of the world just left China to die, with some such as the Americans stating "how weak and pathetic the Chinks were". However, unlike the others, the Eurasian Union provided Chinese armies with weapons and equipment, trained their troops, and fought alongside. During this time, communism in China was on the rise, as countless peasants and workers looked towards the Eurasian form of economics.

The war was long and brutal. It was a war of communism against fascism and imperialism. The capitalist powers sought to destroy Eurasia and France, and in the case of Nazi Germany: waged a war of total annihilation. Things changed in the spring of 1944, when an Eurasian built bomber dropped the first atomic bomb onto Berlin, effectively decapitating the Reich's leadership. In the following months, more of such weapons were used; around 2 per month.

WW2 ended in 1946, when Japanese forces finally withdrew from China. By this point, all of Europe barring Great Britain had fallen to the Soviets, and the conflict was effectively over. 180 million people had died, including some 37 million Chinese. The war left the former Republic of China a shell of its former self. Over 80% of the nation's industry had been ravaged, and millions were now starving due to farmland damage.

The following civil war saw Mao Zedong and his Communist Party take power, and they quickly began to silence opposition and crush dissent. Mao promised the people of China much, but instead got the nation involved in a number of disastrous economic plans and wars, getting millions of Chinese killed. When WW4 broke out in 1957, 4 of China's largest cities were hit with nuclear weapons. This was due to Mao's decision in attempting to invade Korea, and it ended horribly. By 1960, China had improved little, and was on the verge of collapse once more. The United States stood at the sideline and laughed, while continuing to fund Japan's endless aggression.

This lead to the 2nd Chinese Civil War of 1962-1965. Wang Jingwei, a former member of the communist party and intellectual, led anti-Maoist forces against the corrupt govt. Born a poor peasant, Jingwei had experience first hand the many wars and famines that plagued China, and sought to end this. After a hard fought civil war, China was reunited under a newly reformer communist govt. led by Jingwei. For the next 15 years, the nation would begin to rebuild. In 1972, the DPREA was declared after the peaceful annexations of Japan (which had been devastated prior), South East Asia, India, Mongolia, and Korea. What followed was a time of revolution in culture and the arts.

Government

The Govt. of East Asia can be described as a one-party dominant socialist pseudo-democracy. Representatives to the People's Revolutionary Congress are elected by individual communes, cities, and socialist republics. The state remains rather centralized, although individual republics have some sort of autonomy. There are other parties in the govt, but all happen to be varying degrees of leftist and liberal.

The Central Govt. resides at the top of the command system, with individual Socialist Republics a step lower. State and local govt. are considered the weakest in the system.

Foreign Relations and Military

The military of East Asia is incredibly large, mainly due to the threats reactionary America and the Western bloc pose to the nation. There are some 10,000,000 active troops, with a further 25,000,000 in reserve. Massed tank and infantry regiments can be seen alongside more elite troops such as the proletarian guard. Most military equipment is quite similar to that of the PRC, although more advanced weapons do exist, if not in large quantity. The navy is also quite large, with some 15 aircraft carriers and a total tonnage of 4.6 million tons. While not as large as that of America (our history), East Asia's navy is more than strong enough to defend the nation's own territory.

East Asia has an estimated 95,000 nuclear weapons, with 10,000 over 1 megaton in yield. There are some 7,500 missiles used for delivering these weapons, while standard bomber capabilities also exist.

Military spending is very high, at upwards of $9 trillion.
