The hard-working, democratic population of 131 million Marths are highly moralistic and fiercely conservative, in the sense that they tend to believe most things should be outlawed. People who have good jobs and work quietly at them are lauded; others are viewed with suspicion.

The relatively small, moralistic government juggles the competing demands of Defense, Law & Order, and Education. The average income tax rate is 15.7%, but much higher for the wealthy.

The Markathhian economy, worth 6.53 trillion Makrs a year, is fairly diversified and led by the Woodchip Exports industry, with major contributions from Arms Manufacturing, Uranium Mining, and Book Publishing. State-owned companies are reasonably common. Average income is 49,866 Makrs, and evenly distributed, with the richest citizens earning only 2.3 times as much as the poorest.

The government has become increasingly militant, prime real estate is devoted to wind farms and solar energy generators, grannies with arthritic hands work miserably on factory production lines, and aeroplanes have been converted into housing units after all air travel was outlawed. Crime, especially youth-related, is totally unknown, thanks to a capable police force and progressive social policies in education and welfare. Markathh's national animal is the Markath, which teeters on the brink of extinction due to widespread deforestation.
