You can buy a plane ticket and stay in the US. You could go by boat. In fact, the people I'm worried about are more likely to be able to get in. Best example of a wall working, look at Hungry and their Razor wire wall, more people are trying to cross that and only 2-5% get past only to get picked up by police.
How long is Hungary's wall and how long is the Mexican border? For a wall to work there has to be guards and patrols all along the border, covering every mile, or else it will be utterly useless. Do you really think people trek thousands of miles acrosa Mexico only to turn back at the sight of a wall?

People don't carry equipment across the desert. They organise themselves in groups at a border town and attempt the climb together. Some make it through and the rest return to the border town and join another group next time
